Some of the discussion topics:

  1. Can Dwayne Casey be the difference in Toronto? How much of a difference can a coach make, and what kind of defensive schemes can we expect to see him run here in Toronto to work with guys like Bargnani and Calderon?
  2. Bargnani said in an interview a few weeks back that he thinks part of his problem has been that he has been playing out of position for the last five years. Coach Thorpe gives his thoughts on Andrea Bargnani moving back to his “natural position” of power forward.
  3. How does the hiring of Casey impact how the Raptors draft? Who is the big time defensive guy the Raptors could take at #5? Are any of them ready to come in and contribute right away on the defensive end at the NBA level?
  4. What is up with Bismack Biyombo?
  5. Before the draft last year we talked about Solomon Alabi, who Coach Thorpe is a big fan of, and the Raptors were able to get him late in the second round. Where is he at in his development and where does he fit in with the Raptors? Coach drops some interesting tidbits on Alabi’s summer so far.
  6. Ed Davis – how he looked in year one, what his roadmap looks like, and what kind of a center suits him.

What I got out of this (in regards to Coach Casey) is…. IF he has the right plan, and IF he has the right players, and IF he can get everyone to buy into that plan, and IF he can get everyone to execute that plan than he can potentially turn Bargnani into neutral defender.

Thats great… but is it really a suprise?  I mean IF all that happened you could make me a neutral defender in the NBA.

    What is the right plan?
    Who are the right players?
Will Casey be able to get them to buy into that plan?
Will the current roster be able and willing to execute that plan?

Oh and if it doesn’t work… no biggie.  Go through 2 or 3 more coachs.

    • Nilanka15

It’s going to be fun watching Casey make Bargnani cry.

      • sleepz

I said it pretty early on this forum but it’s a shame that the scenario would ever play itself out.

Andrea should be traded before Casey even hits training camp. I had an awful feeling that BC would want Casey to try and rehabilitate Andrea and nothing has made me feel like this is going to change.

I don’t want to see Casey struggle with Andrea or try and motviate him. Let the new coach focus on getting his players to learn his systems and get them to play the right way. Motivating others is for Tony Robbins. Give the coach a fair chance to succeed.

        • c_bcm

Naw. I’d Give Bargs until the trade deadline this year.

          • points

i don’t think so tot dad is not getting rid of his #1 son he thinks with the right nanny bargs will grow up to be like dirk in two years.

        • Nilanka15

For what it’s worth, Colangelo has shown an ability to identify his mistakes and correct them (Kapono, Turkoglu, Triano, etc.).  Although there was a lot of speculation regarding Colangelo’s motivation for hiring Casey, I still think Bargnani’s on the block.  There will probably be more trade chatter when Bargnani’s BYC status expires, and when the new CBA is settled.

          • Theswirsky

what concerns me is there is almost no trade chatter surrounding BC.

            • points

maybe he learned something from the Bobcats

            • Omar

Because BC is much smarter than many of you irrational, emotional Raptor fans. Not even BC, almost everyone that knows Basketball agrees that BC needs to try AB in the new system given that his trade value is real low and his upside is quite high ( example: pod cast above).

This team is rebuilding and you want to try everything this year and if it DOES NOT work, then you can trade AB later this year.

              • Nilanka15

After 5 years of trying, under 2 head coaches, and playing three different positions on the floor, you’re actually telling us that Bargnani still has upside???  It’s irrational fans who think one man can fundamentally change a player’s lackadaisical personality.  Dwane Casey is a coach, not a hypnotist.

A far more likely scenario is that the experiment fails, and Bargnani regresses next year, playing less minutes, scoring less, rebounding less, etc.?  Wouldn’t that hurt his value even more, and make him almost impossible to trade?

He’s coming off a career high in PPG.  The time to trade Bargnani is now.  His defensive and rebounding short-comings are not….I repeat, are not going to disappear next season.

                • Amir

Too bad most coaches including the one featured in this pod cast, disagree with you 😉

                • Nilanka15

He ain’t the coach of the Raptors 😉

                • barenakedman

It’s true that almost everyone who doesn’t watch the Raptors play day in and day out thinks Bargnani is the leader and best player on the team. The reason for that is because he scores the most points.
The bball savvy fans who follow the Raptors closely know the baggage that comes with his scoring will nullify and outweigh the sacrifice the team makes to give him those 20 points a game.

                • Tim

” Leader” I have not heard that from anyone :) Do you really think that these coaches don’t watch the game and just make comments risking their professional reputations !!

You got to give more credit to these professionals who study the game and has spent years and years , educating themselves by playing the game and coaching the game and less credit to the High school student fan who watches 10-20 game a year and love to see himself post on internet.

                • John

I feel Sorry for Nilanka, The Swirsky (Tim.W) who are stuck with AB for at least another year. At the same time, I feel sorry for the rest of us who need to scroll pass their long nagging, repeated posts about AB all summer long :)

                • Nilanka15

If we have to suffer through Bargnani’s indifference for another year, I just hope we draft Walker.  He’s a far better rebounder than Bargnani.

                • Kelsie Mcpherson

                  ROTD

                • RapFan81

Love minute 19:00 , Listen to what he says:
” Toronto is a Bad team and needs to try all different combinations …. AB hasn’t reach 75% of his potentials ….. You trade AB if Davis became a grat scorer and ….”

With Casey being not a great offensive Coach, it will be a bad move for Raptors to move their best offensive weapon without really replacing his production. What that all means: One more Season with the Big Italian Stallion.

                • points

you been a raps fan since 81 but i been a raps fan since 79 hehehe (m.jackson voice)

he’s already impossible to trade, an overpaid bench scorer is all that we can hope for

                • Nilanka15

I’d rather have an overpaid bench scorer (on a shorter contract).

agreed.  with ABs value so low and his ceiling still high, might as well let new coach see what he can do with him…  he is still only 25 after all..

                • BCGheradiniJayGots2Go!!

                  Value low- according to whom?

How do you know what other teams will give up for AB?

He has no upside left it’s his 6th year in the NBA next season.lmfao

              • BCGheradiniJayGots2Go!!

BC said in the past that he gets offers for AB all the time.

His value shouldn’t be low as he averaged 21 ppg last season.

AB has no upside left after 5 years in the NBA- recognize he’s just a lazy moo’fer- str8 up & down!!

          • BCGheradiniJayGots2Go!!

He hasn’t correct his biggest mistake to date- AB.

Even when his BYC tag expires BC will most likely use the potential upcoming lockout to give Barg’s another chance in the TDot and maybe trade away Ed or Amir 1st- time will tell.

        • barenakedman

I sincerely hope Casey isn’t under the false impression that  Bargs is a big minute, 1st offensive option, core member of the team going forward that just needs a defensive system that will camouflage his deficiencies.
It is up to Colangelo to make that clear to Casey.

          • Kelsie Mcpherson

If Andrea is still with the team when the new season starts, what Colangelo should make clear to Casey is that he is not tied to Bargnani so he should bench him or sit him whenever he feels he’s not putting in effort and being where he needs to be on the court. He should also let him know that he doesn’t have a starting positon locked up like last season.

Why are we still ‘rebuilding’ with the old creaky foundation?

            • BCGheradiniJayGots2Go!!

It’s not a rebuild until you blow it up 1st ie trade away Jose & Andrea the 2 longest tenured Raptors under BC.

Is this BC’s new ‘Winning Plan’?

          • points

Casey will be out of here faster than you can say” i am the nanny”

Excellent interview Steve.  The Alabi comments were very interesting.

    • Maleko

I agree. I liked Alabi out of college, and became disilliusioned this year. I am once again encouraged about him after listening to someone outside the organization. Was not aware of the knee issues.

  • Mediumcore

Great podcast, always interesting to hear the pro’s weigh in on Raptor matters.

Great to hear that Alabi is coming along. A lot of people have been slagging this guy, but don’t realize that he’s a legit 7 footer. You can’t find 7 foot guys that are that agile who can play the game. And you don’t give up on them after just one year.

It sounds like something has got to give and either Bargnani is traded for an asset or Ed Davis is. BC better not screw that one up. Bargnani to Utah for their 3rd pick?

Wishful thinking but the 2011-2012 Roster would look like this:
PG B. Knight (with the 5th pick), Calderon
    SG D. Derozan, Barbosa
    SF S. Weems, J. Johnson
    PF Ed Davis, A. Johnson
C  Enes Kanter (with the 3rd pick), S. Alabi

    • Nilanka15

I’d be very surprised to see Weems as a starter (or in a Raptor uniform at all for that matter).

      • Mediumcore

Baby steps Nilanka, baby steps. Can’t fix all our problems in one summer, so you gotta take whats available. Perhaps JJ starts over Weems, but I still think Weems is the more talented of the two. Perhaps if he’s completely healthy he’d be more inclined to play D…especially with Casey ragging on him.

        • Nilanka15

If Weems was on the books for 1-2 more years, I would agree.  But being a restricted free agent, I just don’t see Colangelo matching anyone’s offer while other free agents wings available (e.g. Jamal Crawford, Boris Diaw, Anthony Parker, Deshawn Stevenson, Arron Aflalo, Wilson Chandler, J.R. Smith, Jonas Jerebko, Mike Dunleavy, Shannon Brown, Shane Battier, Luc Mbah a Moute, Jarred Jeffries, Jason Richardson, Thaddeus Young, Grant Hill, Andrei Kirilenko, Maurice Evans, Josh Howard, etc.).

I realize most of these guys will come with a heftier price tag compared to Weems, but they would provide more value on both ends of the floor, without needing to “hope” for internal development.

I would personally love to see Battier or Hill on this team.  I couldn’t think of two better players to be that coach-type player in the locker room, that every young team desperately needs.

          • Mediumcore

Good point. We need to upgrade the small forward spot for sure, but not sure how realistic it would be this off season. I’m using the roster I was hoping for in my earlier comment above as a blue print so I don’t know how much coin the Raptors have to throw at those guys.

      • barenakedman

Weems is a little small to defend the three [he’s smaller than DeMar] and played better at the two.

      • BCGheradiniJayGots2Go!!

Weems is an excellent back up to DD and BC should be able to re-sign him to a reasonable deal (ex: 3 y 9 m).

        • Pointzswallows

          weems is excellent?…lolfail.

          • BCGheradiniJayGots2Go!!

As long as he plays SG and not SF.

    • c_bcm

I’d hold onto Bargs this season and get a higher pick in next years draft. Kanter is ok. But we can do better.

      • points

what i want to know is,why are we drafting a centre when we already have alabi why not let the guy play

      • Mediumcore

No doubt he has some value as a scorer to teams out there. I just think his time here is up. Bringing in Casey is going to give everyone the idea that we can be the Dallas of the east which I don’t buy.

    • points

raptors would win only 12 games with that bunch…cardiac 5 games in 5 days, i say thats good for some back to back games and when raptors go out west.

coming june 23 to the raptors Google this :kemba walker black and yellow.

      • Mediumcore

Raptors may only win 12 games with that bunch this season, but going forward with a yound talented core is what the rebuild is all about.

I like Kemba as well (we’d win more games right away with him), but I just like everything that Knight brings to the table that much more.

You are freakin sick!  “tot mom” refers to Casey Anthony, the mother who allegedly drowned her daughter.  You are suggesting that Brian Colangelo is the male version of Casey Anthony.  Your comments are insensitive, disgusting, tasteless and have absolutely no place in this forum.

I have been reading Raptors Republic for years now and comments like these and comments that contain hidden racism written by people who can write perfect english have no place.  Writing in under multiple names does not hide the real author.

Getting sick of this crud, I recently reviewed Raptors HQ and discovered that they actually banned a poster from being able to make further posts on their site.  Raptors Republic should do the same with “points” and any other name they write in under.

There should be limits to freedom of speech in a forum provided for the purpose of sharing legitimate and decent thoughts about a team we collectively follow.

The administrators of this website better take heed and do something before they lose control of a great forum for discussion!!!!!!!!!

                • cesco

I think they already lost control of the forum . Repeating the same inane comments against Andrea day after day show an obsession bordering on the pathological . They are now in complete fear that Andrea could stay here forever and their comments will degenerate into worse and worse ” mud slinging” , a term used by a coach now in LA  .

      • Juicey

12 games?  That roster isn’t any worse than the one that just won 22 games.

Not to mention 12 games could mean #1 pick in a strong draft!

That team wouldn’t win 22 games next season or 10 in a strike shortened season.

Weems is not a SF. He needs to play SG.

      • Mediumcore

I’m not that concerned with how many wins they get next season. I like the idea of putting a bunch of lottery picks on a team and giving them playing time. Hopefully Davis will be able to establish an inside game which Knight could compliment with his perimeter game and Demar can provide slashing and mid range game. Throw in a defensive system from Casey and you have yourself a competetive team.

        • BCGheradiniJayGots2Go!!

          It’s not that easy.

I want to see who his assistants are & if BC makes any transactions before next season 1st.

If BC keeps AB then either Ed or Amir are most likely gone as all 3 play PF.

Still need a quality pg- no way Jose.

I’m tired of watching both Jose & Andrea in Rap’s uniforms.

  • Maleko

And yes forgot to mention great interview this week.

  • Bendit

I didnt realize Alabi had had a knee operation prior to last season…no wonder he looked like he dragged himself back ‘n forth the floor and was slow on switches etc. But DA seemed to be more enamored about his jump shot…I’d rather he was a Biyombo type.

  • Nilanka15

    According to the Canadian Press:

“The Raptors have called a news conference for 1pm et on Tuesday to introduce their new head coach.”

  • c_bcm

Interesting thoughts on Alabi. Could be a break-out year for him? Maybe a stretch…but compared to last year…maybe so.

  • Raptorsss

Wow, if the Raptors draft Biyombo and Alabi becomes a rotation player, the Raptors will have one of the best front courts in the NBA. At the 4 Bargnani, Davis, Amir… 5. Biyombo, Alabi…

That ‘trash talk’ comment from Bayless had me thinking is Kanter even a center?

He measured at 6’9 and 3/4’s at the combine. Even with shoes it makes him a tad short for the position. Factoring in the inactivity, even if he’s available at 5, I have concerns about picking him. The main positive for me would be that it might signal the end of Andrea’s time with the Raps.

    • Nilanka15

Unless we move up or down, it’s Walker or Leonard for me.

      • Kelsie Mcpherson

I agree. I would also throw Burks into the mix (I really enjoyed watching Big 12 games last year), I just think 5 is too high to pick him.

    • Jimmy

Kanter is a Center. It is great to see Bayless realizes how important AB is and how great AB + Kanter beside each other would be.

      • sleepz

How do you know this? He couldn’t play basketball in college so there is no way to project this accurately. If he’s under 6’10 he will have challenges manning that position, regardless of his strength.

Bayless see’s AB’s ‘importance’, because he doesn’t want to be traded again and he knows that you don’t rock the BC boat.

I think a Kanter-Bargnani frontcourt would be a potential disaster.

        • Nilanka15

I’m not concerned about Kanter’s height, but I do agree he isn’t a “game changer” type of player.  And he certainly wouldn’t be enough to hide Bargnani’s flaws.  Dwight Howard himself would find it hard sharing a front court with a 7 ft. Kapono.

      • Gradgrind101

You are putting a great deal of hope on a player (Kanter) who didn’t play any college games and definitely wasn’t dominating in high school. In the limited footage I’ve seen he floats on the perimeter, doesn’t fully rotate in help defense and sometimes moves out of the way defensively, he’s a decent shooter and has a couple of post moves, not very fast and doesn’t have a rebound. He seems like a lesser version of Bargnani who we are expecting (or hoping) to be better than him. Maybe he has shown something in the pre-draft exhibition games but remember those games are like NBA all star games…That is there is little or no defense to fight through…

Ed. D and Amir are 4’s. I don’t expect them to play the 5…….even though on last years team thats sometimes how it ended up.

Both those players also get up and block shots as they both have good athleticism.

Wonder why he is called “Coach Thorpe”. His wiki bio mentions only one reference to him being an accredited/employed coach and that was some time ago as an asst coach at a high school!
He is more of a trainer who runs an offseason skills development program and an analyst/broadcaster.

  • Steve

I really hope Casey try to play Alabi more and give the kid the chance. I feel that Jay did not give him the time and it will be a big mistake for us to just ” GIVE UP” on him now when he is SSSOOO Cheap and we are rebuilding.

    • BCGheradiniJayGots2Go!!

Alabi is a scrub- point blank, he’s POB Light.

  • DallsFan

    Brewer + Beaubois+ Haywood
     for
AB + Toronto’s first over all pick in 2012

This way, we get AB of ur hands and give you a great PG and a Great Center to play along side Amir Johnson.

    • Nilanka15

A “great PG” who is probably less developed than Kemba Walker, and a “great center” who couldn’t play in Game 6 of the finals because of a hangnail.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_DANSRO43XQD3CLQZ2JFM5JZRQI 2damkule

        i dunno, it’s not a terrible idea ; p

i’d remove haywood (ick – talk about a guy who should only ever be signed to a 1-yr deal), replace bargs with calderon, and remove our pick.  i’m no fan of bargs, but i think he can get more than pu pu platter (notwithstanding the ridiculous notion of including the raps’ pick).  to take on haywoods contract, dallas would have to offer up something more enticing than a big stiff, an under-sized PG (though i’d take him) & a decent 7th man (brewer – who i actually like quite a bit).

        • Kelsie Mcpherson

If you’re only looking to Haywood for rebounding and defence, he would be a good addition. Not a great player by any stretch of the imagination, but a true 5 that plays like it.

          • yertu damkule

only when he feels like it…and by ‘feels like it,’ i mean ‘is playing for a contract.’

haywood got paid.  he’s not due to try again for at least another season or three.  IMO, he’s the epitome of a coach-killer.  lot’s of skill, not much heart.  like blatche, except blatche has lots of skill, but not much brains.

            • sleepz

lol, true, but if you look at his career stats you could make the argument that he’s been ‘servicable’ for much of his career.

by no means am i suggesting haywood is going to ‘change the culture’ but at least we would have a real 5 playing the position.

              • yertu damkule

i wouldn’t want him on any kind of rebuilding team, where he’d be given a ‘voice’ as a veteran ‘leader.’  he’s fine on a vet-laden team like dallas, but i think he’d be cancerous on a young team like TO.

  • Rpsfan95

this press conf. rules, Casey said all the right things, Triano not assistant as of now

    • Matt

Too bad Score stopped covering it in the middle of the question and answer segment. I thought he said all the right things. He mentioned DD and AB more than any other player on this team and it seems like AB will be part of the plans for next year.

Now, only if either Kanter or Knight drop to five and things will finally start to look up.

      • Dan

Take it one step further, Valanciunis stock is falling at a rapid rate since he said he wants to be in Europe one more year. Some think Huston at #14 is the earliest that he will be drafted. I really think BC should make a run at that pick and try to get him for our future.

  • 511

Real pleased to see Dwane Casey on board. I like what he says and how he says it. Next thing to watch for – other than who we draft – is who the assistant coaches will be. I wonder who’s on his list? Can’t wait to see.

  • http://profiles.google.com/ebrian Brian Y

Thorpe talked about two possibilities.  One was Bargnani playing with Biyombo (I doubt we’ll draft him unless we acquire a second pick), and the other was pairing Ed Davis with Solomon Alabi.

Notice how Amir Johnson wasn’t even mentioned?

You might have a point there.  But were stuck with BC for another 2 years atleast and you know the team will naturally improve….and he will be extended.   The Casey hire is a good one, and we should look forward to potential defensive improvements and new players and stop worrying about a fired coach, Gheradini and a President were stuck with.  As with Bargnani, it should be fun to watch him deal with a coach who demands defensive effort.
As for poor BCGheradiniJayGots2Go!! its painfully clear that he is just pissed off because everytime Grandmaster mel comes to town he sits down to a big bowl of Primo pasta with Barny to chow down and talk hoops…and he’s not invited.

  • Robert Archibald

I liked what I was hearing from Casey. Getting excited already. Suddenly I am wondering about a guy like Alibi, this might be a situation for him to thrive in. Had to laugh at Casey’s reaction to having JT as an assistant coach-don’t think he was too interested in that. Triano might make a great offensive coordinator for a team, but you can’t bring back last year’s head coach. New dude, new locker room, new era. Damn, I AM getting excited already! And Special Ed!  Casey is pretty much the perfect coach for Ed Davis. Ed already plays the way Casey is preaching, this will be a long and beautiful relationship! Does this mean Bayless is more likely to be next year’s starter? Will Casey be able to make players better defensively, better using the talents of players like DeMar, Johnson, Kleiza? This HAS to affect who we draft, and I can’t see it helping Kemba Walker’s case. Whoever we draft had better have the ability to have an impact on the defensive end, and there will be a few players like that available at 5. Kemba ain’t one. Hello Coach Casey, this is Andrea Bargnani… Andrea is ALWAYS an enigma. What if Casey can teach AB how to use his length and athleticism? I do think that if Bargs is around, his ass will be seeing a lot more bench unless he improves his defensive intensity. Bargnani is young enough, and possibly smart enough, to figure out that if he listens to coach he will be a better player and therefore see more floor time. If he doesn’t? F—k him, he can come off the bench. Who knows – I would love to be a fly on the wall when those two meet!

  • Bigbalboski79

the raps wont draft kanter.  we already have a PF that cant play D…  biyombo?  really starting to think the raps may gamble on this guy… it really depends if we aquire that second pick, though.  a bargs biyombo front court could work, in theory…

i just cant see us keeping amir and ed davis long term if we draft biyombo.  in fact, i may be in the huge minority, but i have this feeling we could deal ed davis, because besides DDR, he is the only rap with value and could net us something big: the second pick? a PG or SF from another team…

COACH CASEY THINKS YOU ARE DUMB

Casey: “To me, he’s Dirk-like, as far as being seven-foot, one of the
best big men shooters in the league, great hands, athletic. Where I see
him getting better is being more focused on pushing himself each and
every day, putting his nose to the grind and taking it as a challenge
each and every day to be the best. That’s the determination I want to
charge Andrea with and try to reach him with. I thought he made big
steps last year when Bosh left. I thought he took a big step offensively
to put more of the team on his shoulders and take big shots. But now
the charge is to be more of a leader, to be a better defender, to be a
better weak-side defender and there are some things we can do to help
him with that. But it’s got to come from within. I mean, you can lead a
horse to water but you can’t make him drink. But we’re going to work
with him, whether it’s holding him accountable, putting my arm around
him, whatever it takes to work with Andrea because he’s got too much
talent to let it fade and not really try to strain his potential out of
him and try to get the most we can out of him. Again, he’s our star, he
and DeMar are our core guys… That’s going to be our job as a coaching
staff is to make sure every day we get in the gym, work with him and
push him and see where it lands.”

CASEY SHOULDNT SIGN THE CONTRACT UNTIL THURSDAY. IF THAT WORTHLESS FUCK BARGNANI IS STILL HERE ON THURSDAY, CASEY SHOULD HAVE JUST STAYED IN DALLAS BECAUSE ALL HE IS GOING TO DO HIS WHOLE COACHING CAREER HERE IN TORONTO IS TO PAMPER BARGNANI AND CATER TO HIM. PLUS I HEARD RUMORS THAT THEY MAKING ED DAVIS AS A TRADE BAIT ON THURSDAY. IF ED IS TRADED ON THURSDAY OVER BARGNANI, TORONTO HAS NO HOPE OF REACHING INTO THE PLAYOFFS WITH THESE CORE OF EURO FAGS.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_DANSRO43XQD3CLQZ2JFM5JZRQI 2damkule

uh, maybe you should do the same.  all casey said re. bargs is that he’s like dirk physically (i.e. size) & that he can shoot.  not exactly a huge revelation.  what he also said was, in a nutshell, that bargs’ hasn’t shown consistent effort in other areas of the game (D, rebounding), and that those aspects all boiled down to putting in more effort.  IMO, casey has a very good understanding of exactly who andrea is as a player, and that he (casey) has his work cut out for him in trying to get coax andrea into being a more well-rounded player.

  • BCGheradiniJayGots2Go!!

Game on the line AB has the ball- hold, hold, hold, hold, hold, hold, pump fake, shoot- brick!!

Sonny & Amir both have won games for the Rap’s yet Barg’s has yet to hit a game winner- anti clutch, when given the opportunity to do so.

2 double doubles on the season- pathetic.

  • Elvis

I’ve watched every game the Raps have ever played in one format or another, which I know qualifies me as an utter idiot, but here goes.

I’ve enjoyed watching both AB’s development and some of the big Raps’ wins he’s been a big part o, but obviously, his help D is non-existent. One-on-one D? Effective, and acceptable. Understanding of team D concepts? Below average.

He can score as well as many other 5’s and most 4’s. He’s 25 (?) and relatively sturdy.

In my humble opinion AB would be much better suited to a good team. We could trade him for equal worth easily, but could also use him on a more balanced squad to start, play big minutes and sit while we protect leads.

I wouldn’t however miss his big dumb face.

  • BCGheradiniJayGots2Go!!

Matt Devlin is interviewing Casey (RaptorsToday) and Casey is talking about AB (21 ppg on 44 % fg) like he is another potential Dirk.

    Says he loves Jose.

I don’t know about Casey man.

I think he might just be saying what he needs to say in order to get the job but fuck AB & Jose!!

    • Bendit

I am by no means an AB supporter. I believe the guy has the ability to be at least an average rebounder/defensive player but uses it on a very infrequent basis. But. Casey is a coach. And any self respecting (new) and confident professional coach thinks he can turn anyone around especially when it comes to motivation mixed with a process. Casey seems to have laid down a marker on day 1 (I saw that interview) and I look forward to seeing him work the room including Mr. Bargs. Its going to be interesting. He has certainly said the right things and besides, we dont know that BC is not working the phones right now to trade AB. You do know that they dont tell us everything all of the time?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_DANSRO43XQD3CLQZ2JFM5JZRQI 2damkule

dude…what the fuck do you expect a newly hired coach, who hasn’t had an opportunity to work directly with any players as their coach, to say about those players?  do you really believe anything that anyone says to the media?

  • Dan

I hope Casey has a better fate than Kevin Oneail who coached Raptors few years ago. Kevin was a great defensive coach as well and got Raptors to play a solid defense but was not able to get to score as well. Lets hope Casey gets the right offensive assistant coach and also BC does NOT ship out all our offensive power out of town.

    • Gradgrind101

I beg to differ…O’Neil was a low possession coach who preached control the ball and work out your offensive play late in the count…Keep the score close and try to win it in the last 2 minutes (by giving the ball to VC). I didn’t notice a defensive scheme that hand-cuffed the opponents with a lot of forced bad shots with time running out. Casey preaches an active aggressive defence. I’M GONNA SAY THIS RIGHT NOW…If we don’t have better ball defence the raps/Casey will fail miserably. Calderone is not the ticket neither is Bayliss. Insert Rajon-like defence and now you’re talking…Even Bargs will look better behind a player like that…You can’t win in the NBA without tough on-the-ball defence. You gatta have that or you’re screwed. Bigs will always be fouling when they rotate to cover a slashing guard.

  • BCGheradiniJayGots2Go!!

ESPN is reporting that Scott Roth, who also was a candidate for a spot on the Lakers’ bench, is expected to stay in Toronto and join Dwane Casey’s Raptors.

That’s potentially 1 assistant coaching holdover.

  • Bigbalboski79

as much as i have been a bargani hater, i am curious how he does (and the team does) with better defencive coaching.  if there is one thing that is bothersome is that we are so weak on the wings, and with extra guys at PF…

as much as there is all this byombo speculation, the raps cant pull an arujo, they a sure thing, and kemba seems the choice…  btw, i think he has more upside than he is being credited for.  the footwork and body control this guy exhibits has me believing he will be a star in the league…

there are teams like charlotte and utah wanting to dump their picks in the mid teens, could be an opportunity for the raps if the right player slides…  i could see us taking a wing, particularly if a player like burks slides, as many boards predict…
