Our team is missing Heart, Character, Chemistry, Intensity, attitude and Leadership. There were plenty of players on the board that could deliver this character to this team.

As far as the numbers of Val. I think the ONLY way to make any sense of these numbers is to do a comparison with some of the bigs that played in Europe and are now in NBA. This will allow us to really understand what that 10 boards per game means and …

According to Draftexpress a buyout agreement has been reached with Val’s Euro club.

      http://www.draftexpress.com/

He will be a Raptor for the 2012-13 season.

  • KJ-B

I think the comment here is that there’s a great stock of PGs in next years lottery starting the next canuck in Texas, Myck Kabongo and Austin Rivers…essentially in drafting “Big V” Colangelo was admitting that our team’s gonna suck for another couple seasons and fully expects another high draft pick…

Look at it this way Raptors fans, this was a bad move for this year but it will pay BIG next year when Harrison Barnes, Perry Jones, MacAdoo, etc. etc…Next year is loaded with Blue Chip NBA All Star caliber talent!!!

I like admitting we need to suck for next year, build tradeable assets/movable contracts for that draft and then try to make the playoffs consistently beginning with 2012-13…  Who knows they could end up trading him in a package deal next year and we end with Harrison Barnes + Austin Rivers–BryCo is silly like a fox with this pick!

our buddy Henry Abbott over at Truehoop just posted a nice little piece on Brandon Knight for those Raps fans still mourning.

Unfortunately, time will eventually prove that Henry Abbott … as well as assorted others … was WRONG in his initial assessment of Brandon Knight’s ability to become an elite level PG in the NBA.

  • Sek99

I’m tired of the media pushing this off as a Euro thing. I don’t give a shit where he’s form. I wanted Kanter. What matters it that when Reggie Evans leaves, we have no leadership, he’s probably going to take 3 years to develop and by the time he does end up reaching his potential, we’ll probably have racked up several losing seasons in a row unless we pull a miracle off in the draft or free agency, and our current young core (DD, Davis) aren’t going to want to stick around for that. He has to put on 30 pounds to play C, and if it doesn’t happen it will make him redundant on a team already filled with athletic, but undersized bigs. Beyond all this even, Colangelo has 2 years on his contract guaranteed. If this guy is going to take time to develop and we go through some losing seasons, well he’ll probably be fired, and the new GM may deal him just before he reaches his potential. There are so many flaws in this pick is the problem. Maybe he’ll be a great player and become the C we’ve been dieing for, but the potential for it to go to shit is so brazenly obvious. With Walker, worst case scenario is that his size holds him back, but at least we get a leader in the locker room no matter what. Knight has the potential to contribute right now and also become better in the future, but even if he doesn’t, his size and shooting ability will always keep trade options open. A final problem with the pick is that it feels like another Colangelo attempt to find a ‘complimentary’ piece to Andrea Bargnani. Everyone knows the Einstein quote about insanity right? Beyond all these issues, fan interest is wavering with each losing season and no face of the franchise. I was genuinely excited coming into this draft with a new coach and a new season, but now I couldn’t care less if there’s a lockout because unless we sign Marc Gasol in free agency, we’ve got nothing but another 20 win season coming our way. These are the reasons I and I think a lot of other fans are disappointed with this pick, and saying we just don’t like him because of the Bargs comparison is pretty ignorant.

    • Nilanka15

But didn’t we have a hole at centre coming into this draft?  Doesn’t the Valanciunas pick directly address that hole?

      • BCGheradiniJayGots2Go!!!

Adresses it in 1-3 years from now not for next season.lmfao

And then when, if, Jonas does arrive in the TDot it’s not guaranteed that he will be any good in the NBA as he will most likely need 3-4 years after arriving in Toronto to begin to reach his talked about potential.

        Until then- what?

        • Nilanka15

I respect your opinion, but I don’t respect made up numbers.  3-4 years to develop?  Where exactly are those numbers derived from?  And please don’t reference Bargnani unless you expect to be laughed at.

          • BCGheradiniJayGots2Go!!!

1st off, don’t ask me a question then suggest to me how not to answer it- recognize, that’s a chump move.

That being said, didn’t BC say Barg’s was a 5 year project when drafted? Do the fuckin’ math kid!

For your information I’m not making anything up as soon as Val gets to the Rap’s BC will most likely say he needs 3-5 years to develope- bank on it.

            Laugh on my nuts- sucka!

            • Nilanka15

Actually, drawing comparisons between Bargnani and Valanciunas is a chump move.  They never played in the same league, never played for the same coach, never trained in the same facility, and aren’t even from the same country.  But according to your lunacy, there is a direct correlation between Bargnani’s career, and Valanciunas’s.  Utter nonsense!!!

I’m not infallible- recognize, but Heat future looks much brighter than Rap’s under BC.

Plus, Riley used the #28 draft pick that he initially traded away in the CB S&T deal to draft PG Norris Cole with- BC got played out again just like you.

So keep on laughing your ass of as LBJ & crew don’t give 2 flying f*cks about u!FOH

I didn’t say Norris Cole was getting played- comprehension is a mental extension- recognize.

I said that BC got played out again as the Heat drafted Cole w/ the same 28th pick that they traded to TO as part of the CB S&T deal w/ BC.

Now go put you nuts in a grinder & grin- you sucka chump!

                • Jeff

He didn’t get played ypu dumb fuck, he got James Johnson, a vastly superior player who will actually be in this league 3 years from now.  Comprehension is a problem you obviously suffer from, along any sort of knowledge of the game.

                • BCGheradiniJayGots2Go!!

But the Heat still ended up with the 28th pick after the CB S&T via Chi via Minn to the Heat.

You gotta admit that’s ironic- or not.

As well, you clai that JJohnson is a ‘vastly’ superior to Norris Cole?

Have you even seen Norris Cole play before?

He’ll be on the Heat counting his rings in 3 years time while JJohnson may have gotten shipped out by BC trying to save his job.lmfao

Have you seen Norris Cole play?  I’ll give you a chane to wikipedia him and you cna get back to me.  Only a dumb fuck like yourself would consider acquiring a 28th pick in a weak draft a success.  How can anyone as stupid as you ever give up such a badge?   Also they haven’t won shit yet, and likely wont if they’re relying on Norris Cole for a contribution.

                • BCGheradiniJayGots2Go!!

I don’t have to google him up I know all about the Cleveland St baller he’s the perfect fit to guard the JJ Barea types that did so much damage to the  Heat in the Finals.

He’s a lockdown defender with above average athletic ability- just what the Heat needed from this draft.

                  Enjoying your badge today, kiddo?

                • Jeff

Yes a 4 year college player who starred at Cleveland state?  Sounds like a sure thing.  Might as well have starred at Niagara University.

                • Jeff

It’s even funnier how you refer to him as a “lockdown” defender, considering he played at Cleveland state and never had to guard anyone with a lick of talent.  The glare of the spotlight is a little brighter in Miami then it is at Cleveland State.

                • BCGheradiniJayGots2Go!!

      • Frank

Yes, He does. Probably in 5-6 years he will be decent center in this league when he is 24-25. By then, we probably have many other holes to fill up. Plus, don’t forget where he is picked. He was picked number 5 and I am sure BC could have picked much lower than 5.

        • Nilanka15

Most “experts” are suggesting that contract status aside, Valanciunas was talented enough to go 1st overall.

The odds of Valanciunas taking 5-6 years to develop are just as likely as him taking 5-6 months to develop.  We as fans, have no idea.

          • Frank

“Most “experts” are suggesting that contract status aside, Valanciunas was talented enough to go 1st overall.  ”

Why bother, people on here are so ridiculous with their analysis.  Why is Jonas more of a “project” then Irving, Kanter or Knight?  Jonas played euroleague against men, meanwhile Knight proved he cant run an offence, Irving played 11 games and Kanter didnt play at all.

It’s amazing how people just ignore that, 11 games between the 1st & 3rd picks , they’ll be super stars but the 5th will suck because he plays whole seasons,on his national team is mvp’s etc. This is a great pick.

            • BCGheradiniJayGots2Go!!

Jonas is more of a project than the others you listed given by his current physical attibutes & questions about his potential.

      • Sek99

We have a hole at centre that needs to be filled, but I don’t think this guy is the answer. They compare him to Pau Gasol and Big Z. Both good players, but I think Toronto would benefit much more from a defensive specialist such as a Ben Wallace type or even an Emeka Okafor who are less killed offensively (because when do the Raptors ever have trouble scoring?) but provide huge benefits on defense. Marc Gasol or Marcin Gortat or Andrew Bynum are more the gritty, strong guy willing to bang down low. Just ask yourself this question; BC said he’s a piece on our way to becoming a championship caliber team, do you see him guarding Bynum, Howard or even Brook Lopez in the post? Sure if he puts on roughly 30 pounds he’ll be fine, but we could say the same for Davis. JV may become a great player, but nobody knows if that will happen. I’m not upset with the pick so much as disappointed. I really do hope I end up being wrong about this guy but we drafted based on wingspan, size, potential and play in the Euro league. When you draft on potential and size, sometimes you bust with Kwame Brown, sometimes you hit big with a guy like Dwight Howard out of Highschool, and then you get a middle of the rode guy like Bargs. It’s all up in the air.

        • Nilanka15

I’m not going to sit here and pretend that I wanted Valanciunas from day 1.  I would’ve much rather preferred Walker or Leonard like most fans.

But I’m also not going to dismiss a player, who was considered a top-4 pick for quite a while, simply because of his relatively low exposure to North American fans.

Is there risk involved with taking on a project like Valanciunas?  Absolutely.  Is there just as much risk taking Knight or Biyombo?  Fuck yeah, but I guarantee there wouldn’t have been this much outrage is either of those 2 names were called instead.  I think the frustration Bargnani has caused in Raptorland over the past 5 years has unfairly given all European players a bad stench.

          • Sek99

Dude, I don’t give a shit where he’s from. See how I mentioned Gasol and Gortat? I’ve watched some interviews of the guy and he seems like a good guy who’ll work hard, but I just don’t see him being the best pick considering the fact. And saying he’ll take 3-4 years is very fair considering big men take more time to develop usually, he’s extremely young, needs size, is going to have to regulate either Amir or Davis to very few minutes in order to develop him and on top of all this, he may not be in the NBA this year anyway. Every pick is a risk. Kyrie Irving is a risk, but what we do know is that this kid is being drafted entirely based on potential as you can never put too much stock in Euro League play (Kleiza). Walker proved some things in the NCAA which also doesn’t always translate, but leadership and heart often do. IMO this was a decent pick (Vesely would have been ten times worse) and maybe he’ll be the guy we want him to be, but I think we could have done better things with this pick in this draft. Remember, Bargnani is going to be 28 or 29 by the time this kid starts realizing his potential probably, and if this duo doesn’t work out, we have an older, less valued Bargs (unless he improves under Casey) and Davis or Amir would have had to have been traded or given bench minutes. A lot of logistical problems which BC is going to have to figure out quick.

      • http://twitter.com/dj_Ruffy Raffique

Does it? Let’s see, there are too many questions surrounding this pick. Despite his skill set and his age which are all good, he’s still undersized at that position. In addition to that his contract issue might not allow him to be here until the 2013 season, then he has to develop and transfer those skill set to the NBA, by that time Colongelo might be gone. We were better off doing it the other way around, i.e. picking a PG, Knight or Walker, who can come in and be more of an impact and getting a solid veteran C in free agency.

        • Snowballer1

Why is it that guys like Knight or Walker will have no problem sliding into a position in the NBA, but all Euros will take years and years to develop according to you and others.  According to most experts this draft pick by the Raptors was a solid pickup at the no.5 spot. The draft is always a gamble, and whose to say that management cant pickup a centre in free agency such as Chandler, Marc Gasol (restricted) while this kid develops.  I think most of you over estimate the quality of many of these picks ie. Walker and Knight.   I am glad that Colangelo looked past the quick fix (trade the pick…etc) and is willing to do a rebuild the proper way through the draft.  As well, maybe we should give the new coach an opportunity to put his imprint on this team….before shipping half the players out.  Who knows, he may actually get Bargnani to play defense and pull down more rebounds……Not likely…but you never know!

          • The Rub

With the exception of Dwight Howard every legit centre in the league has taken 3 years or so to become a legit C.  Yao, Bogut, Chandler, go down the list, all of them struggled early on, the NBA is a different beast than dunking over 6’9 guys in Lithuania.  Guards have a much easier transition, it’s just a fact.

By the time this kid bulks up and learns how to bang on the inside anyone worth any talent will have already left this team through FA.

We need to stop drafting guys with potential that might pay off in 5 years and just pick guys with lower ceilings who can come in and help right away.

            • Nilanka15

Players with lower ceilings?  That’s the best way to become a perpetual 8th seed.

  • Mediumcore

Jonas is a solid pick for the Raptors. In a draft with so many tweeners and guys that played power forward in college and now have to play small forward or centre and now power forward or shooting guard and now  the point….seriously I don’t think I can remember a year when there were so many guys coming out of college that seemed undersized to play their NBA position….clearly Jonas is one of the only lottery prospects that isn’t under sized or a tweener.

    Chris (Toronto)
Does Jonas Valanciunas project to be the best all around C in this draft and if not for his buyout would he have gone higher?

I don’t buy that for a second.  Irving and Williams were 1 and 2 period.  Val may have gone 3 or 4 instead.

There was nobody available in this draft that was going to impact the Raptors in a big way this season. Even with the #1 and #4 picks there is a good chance the Cavs end up worse than the Raptors at seasons end.
There was a chance to trade out of the draft and pick up an established starter but BC made an informed decision to go with  Jonas believing that it is a better move for the future of the club.   I can’t criticize BC for not biting on the quick fix.

Kemba Walker- DeMar DeRozan backcourt- nuff said!!

      • Frank

Nicely Said. What Raptor fans as usual forget is beside talents and .. you have to look at chemistry, character and identity of the team. This team is divided. Has no leadership, has no Hear except few players and has identity crises. Strong personality like Kemba or a guy like Knight with his high IQ and his character would have at least define a team identity for us.

Now,we added another Euro. What are we at the end, who is Leader and  ??

        • Nilanka15

This is what irks me.  You claim to be very familiar with the psychological attributes of Walker and Knight (as if you know them personally), but completely rule out the possibility that Valanciunas can posses those very same desired attributes.  Isn’t it possible that Valanciunas is a leader, has high IQ, and has heart?

You dismiss him as a “Euro” as if every single European basketball player is cut from the same mold.  It’s just as wrong as suggesting Derrick Williams will be the next Shelden Williams…because they’re both American.

          • BCGheradiniJayGots2Go!!!

At least DWilliams will be in Minnesota next season in order to find out.

Val is a gamble in the dark that may not even set foot in the TDot for 1-3 years and even then it may take another 3-5 years for him to develope ala Barg’s (as per BC).

            • Nilanka15

It’s hard to be a leader when you don’t speak the same language as the guys you expect to lead, first of all. Also, I don’t know enough about the guy in terms of if he lead his teams in Lithuania, but I know for sure that Walker is a leader. The problem with the pick is that he is a huge unknown versus being able to get more solid assets that don’t have nearly as huge of a chance to not work out as this guy does. Jonas has to change so much about his body and his mindset to play with Bargs or even in the NBA, whereas Walker already has experience with NBA talent in College.

        • BCGheradiniJayGots2Go!!!

          Exactly.

On/off court chemistry is a must if you want to win- especially with a young team. The players don’t have to be best friends but they should enjoy playing together.

DD would have loved to play  next to Kemba in the Rap’s backcourt- trust. Kemba is a proven winner & leader.

JJ even said the locker-room was divided (because of that cancer Bargs and his preferential treatment).

The locker-room has been divied ever since Sam was fired.

Turk, Rasho, AWright, JJack & JJohnson all spoke on the tension in the locker-room via the media at 1 time or another ie no accountability nor film study sessions to correct mistakes under Jay.

Not that we add another Euro it’s that we added another Euro who won’t be here in Toronto for at least 1-3 years- if then.

            • BCGheradiniJayGots2Go!!!

At the time, I recall, DeMar Derozan (who was the Pac 10 Tournament MVP) was a starter at SG on a playoff contending Raptors team (40-42) during his rookie year- do the math, chump!

              Bargnani

They were in 4th place in the East at the All Star break then fell apart under during the 2nd half of the season & missed the playoffs under Jay.

              • Nilanka15

Haha, the Raptors were playing 4-on-5 that whole season because of DeRozan’s non-existence.  Who you trying to fool?

JV was/is a good pick for us. Fans are – fans and generally speaking no one know what happened behind the doors ( war rooms, proposed trades, tryouts, … ). We should be able to look at the bigger picture here. Last 5 years was patch after patch, but the ” wound didn’t heal ” with all those patches. This year is not just another patch, it is far more than that. It is a ” pill ” that helps body really to heal and it was a first stage of complete healing process. If ( IF ) there is a season 2011/12, the rest of the team will go through the transformation caused by new coach and will be a filter ( so called ) to see who is staying and who is leaving via trades. Personally, I expect new high pick for much better draft 2012 and getting a new face of  the franschise – SF or PG.
Couple more signings of free agents and this time next year we should have a Raptors team capable for some serious demage in play offs and not to be just another bottom feeder for other teams.
Patience is recommended beacause the patient was/is seriously sick and recovering process is promissing but long lasting. There is light at the end of this dar tunnel and JV is just a right man in that direction.

      Can you say- kool aid!!!

We need an upgrade of talent, players on the roster now- like yesterday!!

Forget waiting on a guy 1-3 years who has proven nothing & may or may not pan out in the future.

BC gambles likes he’s in Vegas or he has a secret agreement in place to extend his current contract as this move only makes sense if BC is to trade the rights to Val before next season begins.

      • dalmatino

who you are to give a lecture to the fans here? A person who publically stated that if Dallas win the title WOULD NOT post anything anytime and anymore!!! And now you came here, posting like a Raps fan, but you are not a fan, you are a poison who doesn’t want this team th thrive, no you just want to spill your poison around here because you are a very unhappy person. Please keep you word and go away.
Your statements are the same as your character – worth nothing.
good bye and be well ( with or without kool aid )

I’m not a fan? Who are you the officially Raptors fan Czar?lmfao

I’m unhappy with the moves BC is currently making since being re-signed but I’m very happy about DD, Ed, Amir, Dorsey (if he comes back), JJ, JWright (if he comes back), JBayless, Bosa (if he comes back), Weems (if he comes back) & the slight possibility of both Jose & AB being traded away.

Enjoy drinking the kool aid like a robot as BC has a new flavor to give you as needed via pr spins in the wind- chump!

          Real fans think for themselves!!

          • dalmatino

No you are not happy with me, or BC’s decisions, NO you are unhappy with your personal life, it sucks and you are not capable to change it so you use this site to spill your poison, your personal disfunctional life and everything you say is – negative, just like your character and your life.

PS it is far less interesting reading only critisizm, try to give solution(s) to problem, give us your five cents how the problem can be solved.
Otherwise remember, you said, your words : not posting anymore, anytime and certanly no on this forum.

Dorsey, Weems nor Wright weren’t given anything in the TDot they earned it through hard work!!

val’s selection at this point looks like javale mcgee. whenever there is
a chance you can get a 7′ player albeit raw you get one. there will
seldom be an accomplished 7 footer with defensive instincts and polished
offensive game. last time that happened i think it was tim duncan.

whenever you hear a young player saying how his long reach helps him
block shots and how he prides himself in setting screens you have to be
pleased. this is taken from his interview for draftexpress.com in
addition to that he has a huge wingspan and a nice frame which should
    fill out.

i think i will repeat some of the people here, but two premier
franchises targeted val in the top 10, spurs and okc. what would say if
one of them teams was able to trade in and get him and raps would get
cory joseph instead. to suggest we should draft whatever spurs drafted
is silly. nevertheless in this case we did exactly that.

i also happen to agree with bc point that rebuild should start with a
big man as they take a longer time to develop. i can finally say our
team has a pretty high ceiling with ed davis val forming a dynamic
    defensive frontline.

my pick still would have been kawhi, but this one right here is not to shabby either. way to go bc, you have some balls dude!

      Howard
      Noah
      Gasol

is there any C this guy’s name isn’t thrown around with?

  • BCGheradiniJayGots2Go!!!

Why not just draft Casper The Ghost?

As I know he won’t be in the TDot next season.

I can just see BC in 2-3 years when his contract is up for option spouting off about the future in order to secure his job again by pointing to increase of wins from 22 to 25 to 29 as progress in the right direction while ranking from 30th to 29th to 27th to 25th in total team defense as well.

Casey seems to have fallen in line with the BC ‘Con’sensus crew- sad.

    • Nilanka15

Can’t you be the least bit open-minded about Valanciunas?  You can’t say with any certainty that he’ll be a bust, that he’ll take 3 yrs to come to Toronto, and that he’ll take 5 years to develop.  His buyout could be settled by Monday for all we know.

      • BCGheradiniJayGots2Go!!!

Time will tell when, if,  Val ever gets to Toronto.

But it won’t be next season and may take up to 3 years as there is currently no buyout in writing as BC has yet to negotiate one with Val’s Euro team- recognize!

BC will most likely give Val the same development considerations he gave Barg’s- 5 years, upon his arrival in the TDot.

Do you expect BC to use his magic charm and get Val’s team to let him go in time for next season when Cleveland couldn’t?lol

BC will come back from Europe with his tail between his legs lying about everything buyout related trying to spin it to fans like a politician politicking- just wait & see.

    • dalmatino

you are really so blinded with your personal vedetas that you are not aware that : noone is good enough for you. Now, only copule of days after he was named asa coach, you already know Casey is in small left pocket of Colangelo’s pants.
At the beginning it was funny, but now it becomes so sad to read your comments.

Be well, find the sense of your personal life and come back, come back as a decent human being and true fan of OUR Raptors team.

Casey fallen in line… you notice that too,the first press con. did it for me atleast meet the team watch the superstar on some film or something before babbling out shit or did BC tell him who was the star and core

      • BCGheradiniJayGots2Go!!!

Casey acted like he had just watched a YT video of Val before he came out and spoke- stuttering and fumbling his words.lol

Andrea as the team’s star player- the bs Dirk comparisons.

AB & DD as the core- wtf?

Jose as a good pg- just had a bad year ‘last’ season- what about the other 2 previous less than seasons from Jose?

I get the early sense that Casey will say anything BC tells him to say ala Jay.

I’ll give it 20 games into the regular season to see how much he really likes Jose & Bargs- since it seems like Barg’s (& Jose) is staying despite last seasons lackadaisical efforts and end of the season presser.

I hope it’s only to increase his trade value- time will tell.

    • Captain Haddock

You’re right! Fire BC and Gherardini! Trade JV (possible best C in the draft) for Kemba (undersized, potential ceiling: Jerryd Bayless)! Trade Bargnani and Calderon! Release the Kraken! Prepare yourself for a golden age, people, where the Raptors are perennial championship contenders until we’re all old and gassy! Genius! And guaranteed to succeed!

    Wow! A cocks best friend!

Everyone on this board needs to move forward and start thinking about our draft next year. We have a lot of work to do, and we also have to pray that there is no long term lockout. Raptors have to play in order for our draft prospects to pan out.

Man! It’s depressing to think that we have to lose next year. I hope this never happens again. I’m gonna take steps to blotch out the score on raptors games.
