This is something I’ve been screaming for-for years now. Mickael Pietrus is now a Raptor; only costing us a conditional 2nd round pick. Not bad considering he’s in the final year of his contract ($5.3m) and will be playing for his next/last contract. i.e. contract year effort

Pietrus gives the Raptors three point shooting, as well as much needed defense out on the wing; things that Casey covets.

Along with the Magloire signing, the Raptors seem to be bringing in cheap(ish), defensive oriented veterans that will come off the books at the end of the season, giving the Raps some nice cap space to try and make something happen.

  • verbatim

my only concern is that we will win more games now.  well, between pietrus and bayless, I am sure we will have enough ill-advised shots to keep us un-competitive.

not that i don’t like pietrus, but he is bench player on a decent team. he doesn’t warrant starters minutes, but on the raps, he’ll get them.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XHJKFMCGSMBEQGBRKJVLKUGSEQ john g

what makes you think they’ll be shooting all the time. do we not have calderon setting up the offense. I think there is a guy named derozen who is bound to average over 20 ppg this season. oh yeah, i forgot we have a italian guy named bargnani, who is a 20 pt scorer as well. so i don’t think both them two are going to chuck up that many shots (if there are any) to lose us games.

  • Suban_is

did we lose our 2012 second round pick?

    • Al_Oliver

      conditional pick

  • Nilanka15

As I stated in the forums, I really like this signing for a variety of reasons.

But if Pietrus ends up starting for this team, I hope it doesn’t hinder management’s ability to evaluate J.Johnson.

    • Marc Johnston

i think both jj and pietrus are scrubs. pietrus is a less flashy and defense oriented scrub though. so i give this one a +1.

  • CalgaryRapsFan

I like the players coming in for the following reasons:

    – they are defensive-minded, to help change the culture of this team
    – they won’t significantly improve the team this year, thus hurting out chances at a top flight pick in the 2012 draft
    – they aren’t stars that will take playing time away from the young core
    – they aren’t signed beyond this season, maximizing the cap space for next offseason
    – they give BC flexibility: let them walk after the season, or use them as assets to trade at this year’s trade deadline
    – they aren’t costing the team much to acquire (unless the Raps lose the protected 2nd round pick, would should be in the #31-37 range in a very deep draft)

    • KaioKev

Agreed. This is what we need for this season in order to call it a “building season” (Yeah I said it!). We need defensive-minded veterans to come in here and help Casey change the culture to defense. I think the Raptors management has been working towards that so far.

  • cesco

The second unit with Amir , Leandro , Bayless , Pietrus , Magloire/Alabi look to me like it can be a good defensive unit and they have outside and inside shooters also .

    • Nilanka15

Although I get what you’re trying to say, I find the term “second unit” inappropriate in basketball.  It implies that all non-starters will be on the floor together (almost like a “line” in hockey).

But that’s rarely the case.  Instead Amir, Barbosa, Bayless, Pietrus, etc. will often times be sharing floor time with members of the starting five.

    • Sam Holako

Amir will be starting this season at the 5. sub out davis for him in that lineup

      • Nilanka15

You think so?  If I were Casey, I would think Davis is better built for the 5 with his added bulk.  But it’s certainly up for debate.

        • cesco

I have to agree , Davis will probably be the starting center until Jonas is ready to take that role . BTW , I know that the second unit players are not send out together very often but they will help the team if they are good defenders and can keep spreading the floor with outside shooting. That was the essence of my comment .

        • Sam Holako

100% Amir will play a bulk of his minutes at the 5. Bargnani will play predominantly at the 4. Davis will probably split time between the two spots.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XHJKFMCGSMBEQGBRKJVLKUGSEQ john g

Davis starting please! Amnesty Amir. Good guy but contract way to much to for a guy foul prone and doesn’t play that good of defense. Davis supposedly added muscle this offseason so I want to see that hes got.

          • cesco

If amnesty could be used according to the fans wishes , there will not be any one left on the team . Already Andrea , Jose , Linus and now Amir . By the end of the year , who will have survived ? , I guess Jonas.

            • news flash

cesco did you read that ESPN article “Raptor use amnesty clause on ANDREA BARGNANI” fun read check it out

              • Sam Holako

Not only is there zero chance BC uses the amnesty on Bargnani, I’m actually not convinced it would be good move. I’m sure the trade market for Bargnani would return something of value.

                • news flash

                  i think so too

                • Al_Oliver

agreed, you don’t throw assets away

        • KJ-B

          Agreed.

  • The Fox

Man, I’ve wanted this guy for years.  I’ve always liked his game.  This is a nice surprise indeed..and only 1 year…

  • Harry S. Truman

Id like to point out that the author’s “man crush” played a total of 57 games over the past two seasons.

    • Sam Holako

I don’t deny it, I loved him in Golden State and lobbied hard for the Raptors to sign him when Orlando did.

  • Kujo

Pietrus hasn’t lived up to expectations (has shown flashes of brilliance), and had been severely injury prone.  What ever he can provide will be a bonus. I’m not expecting much with his history tot his point, but it’ll be nice having an athletic wing player on the roster.

  • ahopper

I think his shooting and solid defense should be a fairly nice compliment to JJ and DD provided he can stay on the court.

  • http://twitter.com/DJAG88 Big D

The 2nd round pick was never given up for those who care

    • news flash

good! so here is how we get Kabongo *the chandler money /2ndr picks and one 1str pick and we don’t even have to trade BARGNANI we use him like the BULLS used Toni Kukoc and not as our 1st or 2nd option not even as a starter 2nd off the bench

  • Whatsaname1

What exactly was his knee surgery for?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Leah-Thomson/1802566133 Leah Thomson

      Uhm… to fix his knee?

      • 2damkule

        way to add…

  • krimzon

I love it looks like BC is intentionally trying to get all the non-american players.

  • ad

Raps r going to sign forbes too according to woj. And its two yrs+ team option for another bench player. Hopefully it wont take up much of the cap

    • Statement

      Playoffs!!

      • cesco

You need to have signed 13 players , I believe , and you need bench warmers  in case of injuries . What playoffs ? .

        • news flash

i want #7 to win the scoring title

          • cesco

Not possible , defense is the name of the game this year .

            • news flash

but ces where are we going to get our scoring from what he can’t score and play defence at the same time too complicated eh

              • cesco

The coach does not expect miracles from him but his numbers for blocks and rebounds have to go up . At the most he will get 24 points this year , not enough to win the scoring title .

  • Statement

Seriously though, it’s probably for little money so it’s all good.

The question in my mind for the season is, how can the Raps secure another 1st round pick?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XHJKFMCGSMBEQGBRKJVLKUGSEQ john g

why? do we need that many. Were bound to have a top 10 pick already. We need to grab a big FA next season. We already young enough.

      • news flash

no we need 2 more (KABONGO and BARNS) then we hit the ground running like BC said

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XHJKFMCGSMBEQGBRKJVLKUGSEQ john g

sure.. first round picks just turn into sure fire studs all the time. What if they   end up being shit, then what? You gave up something to get that pick did you not. We need to get a FA and at least start being competitive. So your thinking 3 rookies (including Jonas) is going to help us get to the playoffs. You got to be insane.

          • news flash

“What if they end up being $hit” do you mean like ANDREA ? then we just give them a big contract like ANDREA ,keep them for 5 years like ANDREA ,move him to his natrual pos. like ANDREA and fire the coach WHAT!!

    • news flash

use the  “CHANDLER” money and buy it whats he saving for

    • B-rocula

It’s b nice to unload maybe barbo for one

  • Lfrankbaum

    relax..the raptors suck..top 5 pick next year

  • Guest

Pietrus seems like a decent signing, he might have something left

I’m still convinced Magloire is a 100% marketing move, but whatever, I guess it’s crazy to think that we will ever be able to avoid the issue of signing Canadians, although I do like the idea of getting Kabongo if he is in a reasonable range of where they pick

  • FreeAmir

Who is going to start now in SF ?? JJ or Pietrus ??

I have no idea why we sign Magloire. The guy has been a poison in all the teams that he had played so far.

  • Moosa

Who do we have so far :

    PG: Calderon, Bayless
    SG: DD, Barbosa

SF: Pietrus, JJ, Keliza ( Injured)
    PF: AB, Davis, Amir

    Center: Alabi, Magloire

This is total of 12 Player which we have under the contract right. Am I missing anyone ?

Now, is this the worst team in NBA right now in terms of Talent ?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XHJKFMCGSMBEQGBRKJVLKUGSEQ john g

not choosing this team in 2k when they update the rosters

    • news flash

just what we need to get BARNS

    • Moosa

      Updated :
      PG: Calderon, Bayless
      SG: DD, Barbosa

SF: Butler, JJ, Keliza ( Injured)
      PF: AB, Davis, Amir

      Center: Alabi, Magloire, Aaron Gary

So this is 13 player :)

      • Bayless

Add to it Anthony Carter … This team is going for it this year…

        PG: Calderon, Bayless, A.Carter
        SG: DD, Barbosa

SF: Butler, JJ, Keliza ( Injured)
        PF: AB, Davis, Amir

Center: Alabi, Magloire, Aaron Gary14 and counting … Are they going to get the number 15 or are they going to leave one empty spot ?With these players,I predict a win total of less than 13 games this season.

        • SB

          13 games? Way too optimistic.

        • tonious35

Don’t forget Weems, unless he’s staying in Lithuania

  • minks77

Love this signing. As much as we need to tank we also need good solid vets to help Special Ed, demar, jj and bayless to progress. You don’t want to stall their progress and a guy like mp is just what the doctor ordered.

Don’t get me wrong, I want a top 5 pick as bad as the next guy but don’t look past today for what may or may not be there tomorrow.

  • ad

I cant believe BOS got David West for nothing. Such BS. I’m tired of teams helping BOS and LAL out. Those teams always seem to get favours from other teams (Garnett, Gasol, West)

  • FAQ

Add Dalembert (who says he would like to play for the Raptors otherwise he will be unemployed) to the mix and you’ve got…. the BC smorgasbord of basketball delight …!!!

Damnit, Ryan…if this is another cap related thing, I swear to jah…

    • Moosa

Is this for real ? Will this be the 3rd trade that our al mighty BC screwed up by not knowing the rules ?? Jezzz BC, instead of shopping for suits you might want to spend some time reading the rule book.

      • p00ka

Bloody BC whiners are a joke. He came up lame asshole.

  • Buschfire

apparently it could be an issue with the knee surgery Pietrus had this summer… or BC changed his mind and wants to get Gary Forbes instead…

  • Buschfire

or Rasual Butler, which looks like its happeneing now…

  • Balls of Steel

BC’s new hobby is to collect the largest number of 1-year players.

  • Guest

Andy Rautins will be next if he gets bought out by the Mavs

  • JHP

For my money BC actualy wants to do absolutely nothing.  Just keep on talking about getting players but finding reasons why not to sign them.  They have 2 weeks before Christmas and I believe the magic number is 13.  So we will see who actually does get signed.

  • Moosa

Amir Johnson reporting to the Camp , 21 lb heavier that what he was ??
Wow, this is how you do Brother. Sign a big contract and get FAT.

    • Bayless

LOL, what would have been the case if AB came to the camp 25 lb heavier ?? I bet Tim W, Matt52, Nilika and … other AB Haters would have asked for his head on the platter.

      • cesco

They have been asking for his head for the past 4/5 years . Andrea did gain weight (from 225 lbs or so to 250 to be able to play center .  It looks like it is Ed and Amir turn now .

      • Nilanka15

Lol, I’ll let you look up the difference between muscle and fat before responding further…

    • jimmie

That’s sarcasm, right? Have you SEEN any pics of Amir? 21 lbs of muscle is not a bad thing on a C.

      • Bayless

And how are you assuming it is Muscle ?? From the the news, it seems like it is not muscle. Who can add 25 lb of muscle in such a short time :)

        • Nilanka15

Ever heard of watching TV? It’s a radical new concept where you can actually SEE players.

          • BAM

You should change your glasses when watching TV :) All the news is that it is all FAT. Even Amir Joked about Drinking too much Canadian Beer ;). Seriously, how bias are you toward Amir that when the guy shows up to Camp 25 lb over weight with Beer Belly, you still try to spin it :) :)

            • Nilanka15

              Who’s biased now?

“As for the bigger body, Johnson said it was the result of a lot of work in
the weight room, not the result of two months where his movement was
              restricted.

“It’s good weight. It’s all muscle,” he said. “My body fat percentage is
still probably around zero. I’m pretty sure I will lose any weight I gained
(with the upcoming hectic schedule), but I want to try to keep that muscle I
added so I’m constantly in the weight room before and after practice.”

          • Ddan71

He had off season surgery but put off doing it until after his vacation. Had the lock out not happened he would not have been ready to return at the beginning of the season.

  • ad

Raptors signed Aaron Gray. BC is stockpiling the scrubs like no tomorrow. I guess the mandate is to suck as much as possible

    • Moosa

Check out the message board. We have fans who are actually excited about this signing :) :) With fans like this, BC has the easiest job in the league.

      • Nilanka15

The excitement comes from knowing BC is staying the course with a proper rebuild instead of blowing all our cap space on overrated players on long contracts. We don’t want a playoff contender, we want a championship contender…and that takes time to build.

Next year is when all the pieces will come together.

All of this year’s signings simply fill out the roster, provide spot minutes, teach the young players about defense, and are gone by the end of the year. Then Valanciunas comes on board, plus another draft pick, BC grabs a few significant free agents, and we’re looking at a solid core next year and beyond. We just need to suck it up this year.

        • ad

I’d love to see them make westbrook a big offer if he’s not resigned by OKC next summer. I’m not sure they can afford him. Outside of that, which free agent available next summer is a difference maker? None really. We’ll have to wait and see who will be on the trade market. But I agree next yr they’re looking for big improvements

  • Buschfire

ok so we signed aaron gray, but we still need a PG or SG or a combo guard….oh wait we already have bayless….

  • ABB

It seems like CP3 is going to Lakers and Howard is thinking about joining him. How awesome is that :)

    Lakers: Kobe, CP3, Howard
    Heat: James, Wade, Bosh

We have to wait for other BIG 3s to start to form.

    • news flash

melo /stats/chandler should keep those boys down in “CUBA” from thinking it going to be easy winning a chip
