With four games left in the season, apathy has set-in; for me at least. Even Arsenalist has been more excited for the “Thank God the Season’s over Party” party than watching the Heat. Seriously, he’s going to have like three too many drinks and make a fool of himself; you don’t want to miss that.

The Heat are still playing for home court against the Bulls, should they meet in the playoffs, and will be aggressive from the tip in hopes of putting this one away early to get some rest for their big three (Wade was rested against the Nets, so that might happen again tonight). They have six games left, and have 2.5 games to makeup; seeing as they haven’t won in Chicago all season…you see where I’m going…

What can I say that hasn’t already been said? Without Calderon and Bargnani in the lineup, and now that Dentmon has been released, this team is super short handed. Having to deal with LeBron on the wing, James Johnson will get some burn (notice how under the radar he got out of the doghouse the last couple games?) since Alan Anderson doesn’t have the size/strength to check LeBron for a full 48.

Whatever, this game is a loss; I’m more interested in the ESPN Rumor (insider required) on the Raptors focusing on PG’s in the offseason. For those of you without an Insider access:

Is it just me, or does this read like the ground work is being set to move Jose in the summer? We’ve talked ad nauseum about the merits of keeping/trading Jose for years now, but he’s had a pretty damn good year, and rates at the top of the heap in pure point rating:

It will be tough to get value back for him considering his contract and the new CBA, but what if we could make a move to land Jennings or Lin with pieces; I’m sure we’d all be on board for that. Obviously nothing works in trade machine because of, but there will be interest in a top-flight point guard on an expiring contract this summer.

Back to the game tonight: the Heat are 12.5 point favourites, and playing at home; me smells a spanking.

  • Nilanka15

During a telecast, Colangelo said that one of his priorities this summer is to find our “PG of the future”, so these rumours shouldn’t be too surprising.  I like the idea of Holiday or Jennings.

    • K.J.P

      Not Jennings please, lol.

    • Nilanka15

Since starting the season 20-9, Philly has lost 21 of their last 32 games, and are barely clinging on to the final playoff spot.  If their slide continues, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see them blow up their roster next season….in which case Holiday might become available.

    • howlonghowlong

All these PG are OK but they’re not “PG of the future”.  I would rather stick with Jose until something better is available.  Plus he’s the only guy that resembles a leader out there.  He’s hard working, runs a good offence, mature, and respected.  Yeah he doesn’t have “allstar” talent but neither do the other PGs mentioned as potential replacement.

      • Raps4Ever

         ding, ding, ding

      • Nilanka15

The PG of the future doesn’t need to be an allstar per se.  Just a solid player who isn’t a liability on either the offensive or defensive end.  I think Holiday fits that bill perfectly.  He’s got good size for a PG, is good defensively, can light it up offensively if needed, and is still young.

We’re never going to land a CP3, Westbrook, or Rondo type via trade (we simply don’t have the assets).  And such a stud PG isn’t in this year’s draft class either.

There are good players out there who could really help us turn this team around, that aren’t labelled as “stars”, but have the potential to become one someday.

        • howlonghowlong

“The PG of the future doesn’t need to be an allstar per se.  Just a solid player who isn’t a liability on either the offensive or defensive end.”

I don’t disagree with this, although the only point guards to win a title with such credentials in the last 25 years are D-fish, Ron harper, and Jason Williams (once).

80’s Lakers:  Magic Johnson (Allstar) – 89/90 Pistons:  Isiah Thomas (Allstar) – 91-93 Bullsh:  BJ armstrong (Allstar) – 94-5 Rockets:  Clyde Drexler (Allstar) – 96-98 Bulls:  Ron Harper – 90s/00 Spurs:  Tony Parker (Allstar) – 00’s Lakers:  D-Fish – 00’s Piston:  Billups (Allstar) – 05 Miami:  Jason Williams2011 Mavs:  Jason Kidd (x-Allstar)

Even if you consider current “contenders” (Chi/Mia/Bos/Dal/LAL/OKC/SAS) only Mia and LAL have a non-allstar at the helm.  You can definitely win without an all star PG but you’ll need a lot of talent to offset it (aka Pau/Kobe/Bynum) and (lebron/Wade/CB).  Even historically with MJ/Pippen/Rodman, and Wade/Shaq.  Unfortunately for the raptors, we don’t have one player that’s better than LAL’s “big three” or miami’s “big 3” or Chi “big three” or boston’s “best three” or OKC’s “best three” … and so on.  Until then a true “fix” at the PG position for possible contender status in 3-4 years is an All star caliber PG.

      • Destro

False Jennings IS an all star and i believe Lowry does have all star talent…

        • Raps4Ever

          “Jennings IS an all star”

In high school? lol, inventing things again.

        • howlonghowlong

Jennings has never played in an All-stars game.  There was no mention of Lowry in this post.

          • Destro

NOOOOPE if we calling bargs an all star HERE
we calling Brandon one too NOOOOOOOPE ! ALL STAR it is !!

    • Brad

Or a few in the draft—Lillard, Marshall, Wroten Jr.

  • BCStefanskiCaseyGots2Go!!!

Raptors need to go HARD after Goran Dragic who will be a UFA this off season- if I’m not mistaken.

    Bargnani/2012 #1 for Rondo?

BC should have found his pg of the future last season ie #5 pick for TParker.

    • voy

not giving up the 5th pick for a 29 year old point guard making 12 mill a year can be easily argued was the proper move, in my opinion.  if you did pull the trigger on that deal what would be the team’s upside?  barely mediocre with a 3 year window before Parker’s ability to lead an elite team begins to slip plus you lockup a big chunk of change limiting further aquisitions.

I like Parker but not for the Raps at 12.5 mill now and 30 years old.  Its just the wrong timing with the team’s stage of development and Tony’s stage in his career and salary.

      • Destro

Not with this team…If we had Bosh still id pull the trigger on that deal..with what we have its a waste of about 3-4 good years he has…

    • 2damkule

i like dragic, think he’s a solid PG, but i think his ceiling is a guy who’s ALMOST good enough to be the primary PG on a contending team…but not quite.

you know how some guys are classed as tweeners…the ones who have the skills of one position, but the physical abilities/mental makeup of another…i see Go-Ran as a tweener between being a starter & a back-up.  he’s ‘too good’ to be a back-up, but not quite good enough to be ‘the guy’ on a contending team.  but it’s real damn close.  FWIW (yeah, not much, har har), he reminds me of jose in that way…different styles of play, obviously, but a similar role/overall abilities kind of way.

      • Bendit

You may have a point there re Dragic…but he has been behind some one named Nash and now Lowry who I would agree is better than Goran. In both cases when injured he has done very well. He is only 26 and he has been very good since Lowry has been injured. I would say he has crossed that threshold of being able to pg a contending team (the Rockets need an upgrade upfront to be one)… ironically Houston is battling Phoenix for the 8th spot.

      • sleepz

I used to think that until the 2nd half of this season. He killed it and looked the part of starting pg.

Only issue I have with him is did he play that well because of Houston’s style of play as both him and Lowry put up crazy numbers this year.

I would actually take Lowry over Dragic but I do think Dragic could be a solid starting pg in the league. No all-star but an upgrade over Calderon.

    • Cdhall

Where do you get this SHIT????
YOU must be STUCK ON STUPID!!!!!
Give up JV for a 30 yr old PG
      YOU really are dam stupid!!!

      • Destro

NOt that id make that deal either right now but your dismissing the fact that Tony Parker is a proven All star 20 PPG playoff performer point guard in this league….Valanciunas at this point is an unproven rookie…

        • sleepz

On a rebuilding team you don’t do it but anyone that saw Tony Parker play at all all-NBA level this year cannot dispute he is a better player here and now, the only issues (and they are major which is why you don’t do it) is of course his age and that his play will decline sooner rather than later

  • BCStefanskiCaseyGots2Go!!!

Btw- no Wade or CB for Heat tonite so LBJ might go off dare I say triple double???

    Norris Cole or JJ?

How does that CB trade look now fans? And the CB TPE?

BC didn’t get value for CB then tried to drag down his character in the media to cover up his own short comings in relation thereof.

    • mountio

      JJ > Norris Cole

      • BCStefanskiCaseyGots2Go!!!

        Let you tell it…lol

        • Destro

Without a doubt JJ >>> Norris Cole

I dont want a dude named Norris on my team any damn way…

          • Lorenzo

That’s a solid argument you got there against yourself

            • Rob

LOL, was just gonna say…..must be the meds wearing off..

              • Destro

You both LOSE for taking the post serious…

I swear folk we got fuckn dunce cap wearing dickslaps in here…smh

                • Rob

To be honest, I don’t take anything you say seriously, so nice try lol..

                • Destro

Nobody cares what or who you take serious….who are you ?

                • Rob

                  You obviously do, dumb shit.

  • BCStefanskiCaseyGots2Go!!!

My top 5 pgs (that should be available) I would like the Raptors to target/acquire in the off season:

    1 Rondo
    2 Dragic
    3 Jennings
    4 Felton
    5 Lin

    • Nilanka15

If you’re Danny Ainge, wouldn’t Rondo be the one player who you DON’T want to trade?  Especially considering how geriatric the rest of the roster is.

      • BCStefanskiCaseyGots2Go!!!

They were dangling Rondo earlier this season according to media reports & rumors thereof plus Bargnani in Boston would be a good match.

Throw in the 2012 #1 and Boston gets some quality youth (most likely a top 7 pick) to go along with a proven NBA scorer to aid the Big 3 (KG, Allen, PP) in their last days.

Who knows if Boston can somehow snag Goran as well they could be alright for another couple of years w/ the Big 3 before they get replaced (contracts expire) on the roster by younger players.

        • 2damkule

‘dangling’ might be a bit of a stretch…from what i’ve heard/read, they were willing to deal rondo if – and only if – it brought back chris paul.  it’s not like they were calling up teams and asking what they could get back for him.  however, once it got out that rondo was ‘available’ (only for CP3, but whatever), GMs started putting it out there that there were multiple offers floating around and that the c**ts were shopping him.

also, i really, really don’t think they’ll be holding onto the big 3 beyond this year’s playoffs…for my money, one of KG or allen are done in boston (likely both), and they’re going to retool around rondo/pierce (in that order…).

        • Bendit

They were “dangling” Rondo for a CP or Westbrook deal. That is not too shabby an exchange if you consider that Rondo still doesnt have a “make them feel sorry for leaving him open” shot.

    • Destro

Absolutely NOT to anything after #3
Raymond Felton ?? Wtf stop it bruh we dont want that fat ass lil goomba…Jennings i like but im not sure if he’s be committed here after comments made mid season,he looking for an opt out to play in a big market and im pretty sure he didnt mean Toronto…

      • Nilanka15

But he’s a childhood friend of DeRozan, and he’s said in the past that he likes the city of Toronto.

        He tweeted this:

“If you could be from another city. What City would it be??? Or State?”

        “I’m from #California so I’m good…. But if I had to pick I would say #Toronto….”

        • Destro

Who gives a shit about any of that….Matt Bonner loves Mr Sub too so should we sign him for the mid level ?

It dont change the fact he’s no better than a already average starting PG we got (Calderon) point up upgrading is to get someone BETTER than what you got….

Lil Romeo was a childhood friend of DeMar so should we give him a look at summer league ?

          smh

          • Nilanka15

Do you suffer from some form of psychological disorder?  ADD perhaps?  Why is it so difficult for you to stay on topic?

You said that Jennings might not be committed to Toronto.   I simply gave you 2 reasons why he would.  Geeeeez.

Remember that reading comprehension stuff we talked about?

            • Destro

My bad breh i thought you were talking about Goomba Ray…

    • Truthkiller

Felton is garbage and Lin struggles against top caliber point guards.

    • howlonghowlong

Reality is, there is no way we’re getting either Rondo or Lin.  To Nilanka’s point why would Ainge do that?  NY is crazy over Lin, so why would they trade him?  and who are we exactly trading to get these players?  As for Dragic/Jennings/Felton … they’re OK but they’re not the solution moving forward.  I personally have no faith in Jennings ever leading a team anywhere.  Dragic is at best a great off the bench PG.  Felton is average at best.

    • BCStefanskiCaseyGots2Go!!!

Oh, shoot, I forgot about Aaron Brooks I would place him 3rd whacking Lin off like a Soprano.lol

    • NyAlesund

Lin will never come in Toronto. He is a big asset for the Knicks (also for marketing).

Felton no absolutely, I prefer JC.

Jennings is not a real point guard. Doesn’t matter if he plays in that position.

Dragic e Rondo yes. But for Rondo I don’t think the Celtics leaves him and the guy doesn’t give me the idea he wants to join us.

Dragic is the guy. European (likes Canada and Toronto), alot of talent and a real point guard. Perfect for us.

  • 2damkule

yeah, you beat me to it.  i really can’t see rondo being moved…this is the last gasp of a dying (albeit high-quality) team, and this summer will almost certainly see it dismantled & retooled around rondo and whatever they can pick up via trade (though it’s debatable what KG or allen would return at this point in their respective careers) or FA.

  • TANKTANKTANK

QUICK HISTORY ABOUT TANKNATION. MUST BE POSTED. DWAYNE CASEY MENTIONED.

    http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/40780/when-tankers-tell-the-truth

    • Nilanka15

      lol, good find.

Whether you agree with tanking or not, this is pretty solid evidence that it’s a strategy teams use.  The Raptors should be no different this year.

    • BCStefanskiCaseyGots2Go!!!

      NBA Lockout????smdh

All about the BRI % not competitiveness…..tanking is for suckas….

      #StankNation was your ass!!

      • Nilanka15

The Spurs sure don’t look like suckas…

        • Destro

          Wait til playoffs…

          • Nilanka15

Sigh….I’m getting tired of spelling everything out for you.

Again, when we’re discussing the merits of tanking, the Spurs have been title contenders since they drafted Duncan.  I don’t give a rat’s ass if the choke in this year’s playoffs….they’ve already benefited greatly by tanking (4 championships), and thus, cannot be considered “suckas”.

            • Destro

I took your posts and morphed it into what i wanna say jew mad ?
Spurs are suckas cuz they relying on a bald spot to lead them to the promise land with Timmay in the side car and they’ll look like suckas again when they bounced early as 1 seed….NOOOOOPE suckas !

              • Nilanka15

Again I say, this thread talks about tanking being for suckas.  Nothing else.

Thanks for your tangential post, though.

                • Destro

They still suckas you uptight ass soccer mom…

You like the dude at a party sees people laughing and cramps up thinking everyones talking about you…

                • Nilanka15

lol, adding fortune-telling to your list of accomplishments, Miss Cleo?

                • Destro

They were a 1 seed that lost to an 8 seed last season breh…..

              • sleepz

You might be in for a surprise this year with the Spurs. Tony is playing at an all-NBA level this year and the supporting cast (adding S. Jackson and Diaw were solid moves) is better.

                • Destro

Depends on the matchup..if they get Phoenix,Houston,Denver theyll move on IF they get Dallas could be a problem…

I dont like Capt Jack or Diaw…it comes down to Manu and Timmay for me…

                • sleepz

Agreed but I think with Splitter playing better, Kawhi and D. Green not playing like rooks and then you add in that veteran element to their big 3 and I think that in this crazy shortened season with days off between playoff games they might go deep this year.

The West is going to be interesting.

        • BCStefanskiCaseyGots2Go!!!

The Spurs didn’t tank for Duncan they lost DRobinson to an injury early in the year and just stunk- point blank, know what you are talking about before talking to me, kiddo!lmfao

  • pran

espn can suck a dick, I hope calderon remains a raptor for the rest of his career.

  • 2damkule

simple oversight in the ESPN article, but they mention that jose was almost dealt to charlotte ‘last’ summer, implying 2011.  he was almost dealt there in the summer of 2010, before the deal was nixed (by MJ, according to most, but maybe by BC).  charlotte then went on to make an exponentially worse trade (in terms of keeping their team competitive; it’s done wonders for their tanking ability though) with dallas.

i think that worked out ok for the mavs…

  • DC

I trade bargnani way way before i traded jose. But all in all they both should be traded because they have elapsed their time and are not gonna get any better and not going to get this team to the playoffs anytime soon.

    • j bean

Calderone could start on a championship team and I wish him well but I have to agree with you. I’m all for a trade mainly because he just bores me.

      • Destro

HE could start on a SHIP team as long as he isnt the focal point on the team, meaning he isnt a top 3 option and you have good, versatile defenders that can hide him defensively off the ball…

  • none

what is pure point guard rating? what is that??

    • Raps4Ever

LOL, I kinda like it because it puts our man at the top,,,,,,,, but then it’s just another “advanced” stat manipulation tool to keep the stat whores happy.

      • Destro

yep PER,TO to ast ratio all smokescreens to prop up inferior players…

        • Raps4Ever

Just like your blustering babble is a smoke screen for inferior mind.

          • Destro

            *yawn*

    • sleepz

Lol, I was wondering the same thing.

  • CantDL

What does everyone see in Felton. is he worth throwing money at?

    • Lorenzo

       Oh god no

    • Raps Loyalist

Raps should wait to see if they can get M. Teague in the second round or package the 2 second rounders to move into the late first and grab him there.

A year as backup to Jose then maybe he’d be ready to start and get a midlevel vet to back him up.  One thing about teague is he’d be a much better defender than Jose but obviously not the floor general type yet.

If it’s free agency the Dragon or Lin is who Raps should go after

      • Nilanka15

If we’re targeting a PG in the 2nd round, I would take a good look at Scott Machado.
