Alright, the trade deadline rolls in at 3 p.m. EST, so we’ve got five hours to discuss and dissect here. What I’ll be doing in this space is posting any completed trades with my thoughts on them, plus any Raptor-related rumors. I’ll also be retweeting Raptors stuff from the RR account, so give that a follow.
Here are your “starting five” to follow on Twitter for deadline stuff:
Marc Stein of ESPN
Woj of Yahoo
Ken Berger of CBS
Blake Murphy, Triple O.G.
Just adding my thoughts on last night’s pair of completed deals here:
According to reports, the Rockets send center Cole Aldrich, guard Toney Douglas, forward Patrick Patterson and cash to the Kings in exchange for forwards Francisco Garcia, Tyler Honeycutt and Thomas Robinson, and send forward Marcus Morris to the Suns in exchange for a second-round pick. (per ESPN)
Not sure I understand this one in the least for the Kings. Two-Pat has been nice but actually worse than Morris when you look at the team’s line-up confirguations, and he doesn’t have nearly the upside T-Rob does. At least they get $1M, though, which is probably important given where the franchise is at present. The Rockets clear salary with this trade (I believe $1.6M, which is significant given they are expected to be max-level free agent players) while also getting perhaps the best player going in any direction in last year’s number five pick, so you can’t really blame them for the deal, even if it does seem like a lot of players going out. The Suns get a serviceable young big for a second rounder, so they clearly make out like bandits and pair the Morris twins together, which will be fun.
GO have some fun with the Trade Machine. The deadline is sure to move slowly, so go over to ESPN and put your best Raptor-related (non-troll) trades in the comments. Usually the
#trollmachine Trade Machine is a waste of time, but hey, it’s the deadline, have some fun.
So the twitter rumbling are that a Smoove-to-Milwaukee deal (which obviously has major implications for a Raptors playoff push), is being held up by Monta Ellis. All the LOLs in the world if it’s because the Bucks are adamant on keeping him, given how overrated and redundant he is on that team.
Lots of Redick chatter, too. Apparently Magic KNOW they can get a first in the 20s but are trying to do better. Think someone would give up a lottery pick for Double-A?
No Raptors chatter at all. Quiet on the Bucks front, too. Celtics apparently pushing for Tyreke Evans, though I’m not sure what they could offer up beyond just cash (cue the Maloofs’ eyes lighting up).
“Marc Stein @ESPNSteinLine
Rumbles persist that Hamed Haddadi & second-rounder to Phoenix to bring Bassy Telfair to Toronto is likely outcome in final hour of deadline”
That second better be protected.
Yawn. I might need to go get some chocolate milk soon. This is boring. I’m assuming the 1-3 hours will be better.
Just realized the Raptors don’t even have a second round pick this year (or any pick). Bassy’s gotta be for a future second, then. Perhaps negotiating the year is the holdup?
Chocolate milk run. BRB. Keep the Trade Machines coming.
Still nothing. The Raptors should inquire about Blair from the Spurs. San Antonio looking to dump him – he’s expiring, so it doesn’t hinder much, plus get his bird rights in case he’d come cheap-ish next year. Probably way more potential in that deal than getting Bassy for the BFF Club.
I’d settle for any trade right now just so this day isn’t a complete waste of my time.
Sorry, fell asleep on my keyboard.
Here’s an interesting rumor though.
“Marc J. Spears @SpearsNBAYahoo
Heat has agreed to send forward-center Dexter Pittman and a second round pick to the Grizzlies for a trade exception, sources tell Y! Sports”
Blockbuster. Sounds like Fab Melo for Jordan Crawford is close in some iteration, too.
No surprise here, but I’m told Broussard mentioned that the Bulls are NOT moving Boozer. I tend not to believe denial updates until 3 p.m. though.
“Adrian Wojnarowski @WojYahooNBA
Celtics will send the Leandro Barbosa expiring contract to the Wizards for Jordan Crawford, league source tells Y! Sports.”
So…it’s Barbosa (injured), not Melo.
The Raptors deal for Telfair is getting “confirmations,” though I was pretty sure it was confirmed earlier waiting for the fax/call. Haddadi+2nd for Bassy.
Sam Amick is confirming that the 2nd rounder is protected, but the protection isn’t clear. Really hoping it’s top-50 or something like that.
“Eric Koreen @ekoreen
Minor note: Haddadi’s contract is partially guaranteed for next year. Would have had to waive him to pick up 10-day pg. Tax implications.”
There’s some info if you were wondering “why not a D-leaguer.” Raptors only about $400k below the tax so have to tread very carefully right now. Also, Haddadi had small guarantee for next year, so this saves money for 2013-14, too.
Thoughts on the Barbosa/Crawford deal, just because: Celtics needed bodies, Wizards clear his 2013-14 salary since he was redundant. Win-win, but they are the smallest of wins on both sides. Shouldn’t have to trade rookie-scale players to save space, tsk, tsk.
“Paul Coro @paulcoro
The #Suns await league approval on sending Sebastian Telfair to Toronto for Hamed Haddadi & a 2nd-round pick (lowest of TOR & SAC in 2014).”
So there’s the “protection”…it’s a 2014 pick, whichever is later. So if Raptors make playoffs, it’s like a top-46 protected kinda thing. Not too bad. If they don’t make playoffs by next year, there are larger issues than a 2nd round pick.
Not that it impacts Toronto, but we just got a Stein Cold Stunner that says Maynor to Blazers may happen at the last minute. OKC needs inside scoring, the Blazers have been trying to move Hickson….could add up.
Looking like Maynor to the Blazers for a trade exception.
Also, in Raptor-related news, the Bucks/Magic/Hawks are trying to get a three-way together to land Smith AND Redick in Milwaukee. That would eliminate the Raptors.
“Adrian Wojnarowski @WojYahooNBA
Orlando has traded J.J Redick to the Bucks, league source tells Y!”
Bucks out on Smoove but likely to get Redick. Doesn’t sound like much else is filtering in.
“Adrian Wojnarowski @WojYahooNBA
Milwaukee sends Orlando Doron Lamb, Tobias Harris and Beno Udrih, source tells Y!”
That is a criminally low return for Redick.
Okay, I’m done. Back to bed now. If anything else trickles in (reported Warrick-for-McRoberts swap, for example), it’s likely to be very minor.
Thanks for hanging out.
