Alright, the trade deadline rolls in at 3 p.m. EST, so we’ve got five hours to discuss and dissect here. What I’ll be doing in this space is posting any completed trades with my thoughts on them, plus any Raptor-related rumors. I’ll also be retweeting Raptors stuff from the RR account, so give that a follow.

Here are your “starting five” to follow on Twitter for deadline stuff:
Marc Stein of ESPN
Woj of Yahoo
Ken Berger of CBS
Blake Murphy, Triple O.G.
Raptors Republic

10:30 a.m.
Just adding my thoughts on last night’s pair of completed deals here:

According to reports, the Rockets send center Cole Aldrich, guard Toney Douglas, forward Patrick Patterson and cash to the Kings in exchange for forwards Francisco Garcia, Tyler Honeycutt and Thomas Robinson, and send forward Marcus Morris to the Suns in exchange for a second-round pick. (per ESPN)
Not sure I understand this one in the least for the Kings. Two-Pat has been nice but actually worse than Morris when you look at the team’s line-up confirguations, and he doesn’t have nearly the upside T-Rob does. At least they get $1M, though, which is probably important given where the franchise is at present. The Rockets clear salary with this trade (I believe $1.6M, which is significant given they are expected to be max-level free agent players) while also getting perhaps the best player going in any direction in last year’s number five pick, so you can’t really blame them for the deal, even if it does seem like a lot of players going out. The Suns get a serviceable young big for a second rounder, so they clearly make out like bandits and pair the Morris twins together, which will be fun.

10:40 a.m.
GO have some fun with the Trade Machine. The deadline is sure to move slowly, so go over to ESPN and put your best Raptor-related (non-troll) trades in the comments. Usually the #trollmachine Trade Machine is a waste of time, but hey, it’s the deadline, have some fun.

11:00 a.m.
So the twitter rumbling are that a Smoove-to-Milwaukee deal (which obviously has major implications for a Raptors playoff push), is being held up by Monta Ellis. All the LOLs in the world if it’s because the Bucks are adamant on keeping him, given how overrated and redundant he is on that team.

Lots of Redick chatter, too. Apparently Magic KNOW they can get a first in the 20s but are trying to do better. Think someone would give up a lottery pick for Double-A?

11:40 a.m.
No Raptors chatter at all. Quiet on the Bucks front, too. Celtics apparently pushing for Tyreke Evans, though I’m not sure what they could offer up beyond just cash (cue the Maloofs’ eyes lighting up).

11:45 a.m.
“Marc Stein @ESPNSteinLine
Rumbles persist that Hamed Haddadi & second-rounder to Phoenix to bring Bassy Telfair to Toronto is likely outcome in final hour of deadline”
That second better be protected.

12:05 p.m.
Yawn. I might need to go get some chocolate milk soon. This is boring. I’m assuming the 1-3 hours will be better.

12:15 p.m.
Just realized the Raptors don’t even have a second round pick this year (or any pick). Bassy’s gotta be for a future second, then. Perhaps negotiating the year is the holdup?

12:25 p.m.
Chocolate milk run. BRB. Keep the Trade Machines coming.

12:45 p.m.
Still nothing. The Raptors should inquire about Blair from the Spurs. San Antonio looking to dump him – he’s expiring, so it doesn’t hinder much, plus get his bird rights in case he’d come cheap-ish next year. Probably way more potential in that deal than getting Bassy for the BFF Club.

1 p.m.
I’d settle for any trade right now just so this day isn’t a complete waste of my time.

1:30 p.m.
kjfkdjf nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnmmmmm
Sorry, fell asleep on my keyboard.
Here’s an interesting rumor though.

1:50 p.m.
“Marc J. Spears ‏@SpearsNBAYahoo
Heat has agreed to send forward-center Dexter Pittman and a second round pick to the Grizzlies for a trade exception, sources tell Y! Sports”
Blockbuster. Sounds like Fab Melo for Jordan Crawford is close in some iteration, too.

1:55 p.m.
No surprise here, but I’m told Broussard mentioned that the Bulls are NOT moving Boozer. I tend not to believe denial updates until 3 p.m. though.

2:00 p.m.
“Adrian Wojnarowski ‏@WojYahooNBA
Celtics will send the Leandro Barbosa expiring contract to the Wizards for Jordan Crawford, league source tells Y! Sports.”
So…it’s Barbosa (injured), not Melo.

The Raptors deal for Telfair is getting “confirmations,” though I was pretty sure it was confirmed earlier waiting for the fax/call. Haddadi+2nd for Bassy.

2:15 p.m.
Sam Amick is confirming that the 2nd rounder is protected, but the protection isn’t clear. Really hoping it’s top-50 or something like that.

2:20 p.m.
“Eric Koreen ‏@ekoreen
Minor note: Haddadi’s contract is partially guaranteed for next year. Would have had to waive him to pick up 10-day pg. Tax implications.”
There’s some info if you were wondering “why not a D-leaguer.” Raptors only about $400k below the tax so have to tread very carefully right now. Also, Haddadi had small guarantee for next year, so this saves money for 2013-14, too.

2:30 p.m.
Thoughts on the Barbosa/Crawford deal, just because: Celtics needed bodies, Wizards clear his 2013-14 salary since he was redundant. Win-win, but they are the smallest of wins on both sides. Shouldn’t have to trade rookie-scale players to save space, tsk, tsk.

2:35 p.m.
“Paul Coro @paulcoro
The #Suns await league approval on sending Sebastian Telfair to Toronto for Hamed Haddadi & a 2nd-round pick (lowest of TOR & SAC in 2014).”
So there’s the “protection”…it’s a 2014 pick, whichever is later. So if Raptors make playoffs, it’s like a top-46 protected kinda thing. Not too bad. If they don’t make playoffs by next year, there are larger issues than a 2nd round pick.

2:50 p.m.
Not that it impacts Toronto, but we just got a Stein Cold Stunner that says Maynor to Blazers may happen at the last minute. OKC needs inside scoring, the Blazers have been trying to move Hickson….could add up.

2:55 p.m.
Looking like Maynor to the Blazers for a trade exception.

Also, in Raptor-related news, the Bucks/Magic/Hawks are trying to get a three-way together to land Smith AND Redick in Milwaukee. That would eliminate the Raptors.

2:58
WojBomb:
“Adrian Wojnarowski ‏@WojYahooNBA
Orlando has traded J.J Redick to the Bucks, league source tells Y!”
That hurts.

3:01
Bucks out on Smoove but likely to get Redick. Doesn’t sound like much else is filtering in.
“Adrian Wojnarowski ‏@WojYahooNBA
Milwaukee sends Orlando Doron Lamb, Tobias Harris and Beno Udrih, source tells Y!”
That is a criminally low return for Redick.

3:05 p.m.
Okay, I’m done. Back to bed now. If anything else trickles in (reported Warrick-for-McRoberts swap, for example), it’s likely to be very minor.
Thanks for hanging out.

  • Why

I think we all under estimate how difficult and complicated it is to make a tarde in the NBA given all the constraints/requirem,ents due to salary cap considerations – I would be surprised if there was much in the way of trade activity today

    • James

Especially if you have a under performer , over paid player which you are trying to trade :)

I know millsap is a free agent but they would have his bird rights and players usually go where the money is.

      • BlakeMurphy

A LOT of risk to giving up those assets with no assurance from Millsap. Otherwise solid deal.

  • Swag
    • BlakeMurphy

Not sure Wash does that…I think they’d be looking for a younger piece or a shorter contract if they unload Emeka. He’d be a nice fit in TO though.

    • BlakeMurphy

      Beasley!! Nooooooo!!!

      • guest

I agree that Beasley is useless but so is Bargs this year. We could amnesty Beasley easier than Andrea and have the cap space.

        • Sam Holako

We would not be able to amnesty Beasley since he was not under contract to the Raptors before the amnesty provision went into effect.

  • arsenalist

Ross is thrown in there to hopefully entice Cleveland – http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine/?tradeId=bk3cdvy

    • BlakeMurphy

      No way they do that.

    • arsenalist

What if we throw in the traditional BC pick?

      • Matt

He is usign that to get Telfair

        • 2damkule

i wonder if he’s bummed about not having a 1st rounder to waste this year?

          • unknown guest

Hahaha, exactly as I was thinking.

  • StandUpComedian

Is it fair to say that the season is over if no trade for the Raptors today? I mean, it would be a clear message imo that BC doesn’t want to make a push for the playoff.

    • BlakeMurphy

Not true. Can’t make a deal just for the sake of it if there isn’t a good deal out there. The bigger concern would be Raps standing pat and Bucks getting Josh Smith…would effectively end Raps playoff chances unless Boston blows it up.

      • p00ka

if WE don’t get josh smith, Im gonna be pissed.

  • Mark

Any thoughts on the Telfair rumor? I know why we need a back up PG but I feel that JL3 is better.

    • BlakeMurphy

He’s not much of an upgrade at this point. Wouldn’t give up anything beyond like a top-50 protected second.

      • Mark

…You were saying about protected. Yikes.

      • James

Once again BC will surprise you with what he is willing to give up :)

      • unknown guest

This has got to be on BC yet again. We can all ride the Lowry bandwagon no since we’re stuck, but jeebuz, there has to be a reason he was getting beat of a starting spot ALL THE TIME. Since TRoss isn’t even getting any burn, was hoping we’d have picked up PG up and now the suns are giving away Telfair so they can give burn to a rookie we could have picked. ARGH.

    • unknown guest

Why couldn’t we had gotten Kendall Marshall instead.

  • RaptorFan

I was at the game yesterday…..

I’m praying that we trade Bargnani today!  what a waste of space BARGS is!  This guy has to be the WORST rebounder in the NBA PERIOD!….he’s a horrible player right now

I’m not paying salaries so I DONT CARE about salary tax.  At this point i would take whatever i can get for Bargs!  Boozer is 10 times the player that Bargs is.  Jefferson, Milsap…Varaejo….All significant upgrades compared to this BUM.  I know i’m ranting, but he’s an embarrasment to all Euros.

At this point i even think Hedo is a better player than Bargs (YIKES!).  Bargnani can’t get a rebound to save his mother’s life.  He cant shoot anymore.  He is now timid and useless as a player (it seems that he needs every play run for him to even have some sort of usefulness).  Where’s the hook shot???  When is the last time you saw him have a put back???  He’s often the tallest guy on the court for god sakes!

Please BC — Even if you have to include TRoss (i cant believe i’m writing this)…..GET RID OF BARGNANI….we need a REAL PF with grit and toughness……its sooooo obvious!

    • jacobdrichards4

Hedo is not a better player then bargnani

      • RaptorFan

Prove it!?…lol…how can you compare garbage and garbage??

Honestly, I know that Bargs can play better BUT right now……he’s pretty terrible

      • guest

at least hedo takes “supplements” to improve his body/game. what does bargnani do? makes pasta commercials and then eats the pasta?
I’m not saying that I want hedo.

        • unknown guest

          Oh. Harsh. But funny.

    • FAQ

Bargs most likely stays because nobody wants him…. so will you be sending out invitations to your seppuku ceremony??!!!

    • ad

Yep, I would take boozer also. Talent wise, you cant do better than boozer for bargs. I would trade ross in a sec with bargs if it meant getting a solid piece back. Not to mention, I think it would be a wise to move to sell high on ross before he is exposed as a role player. Bargs has to go. I dont understand this notion of waiting till summer to trade bargs so he can rebuild his value. Teams know what he is and he is playing like absolute crap which is likely to continue. Who is going to want him in the summer?

    • vino

Where were you years ago? Do you really need to go to the ACC to conclude this?? Been screaming Bars’s shit forever!!

On the TRoss inclusion in a Bargs deal – its a NO, unless we get back a solid player. Not ready to give up talent just to get rid of #7. Might as well let him warm the pine…

      • RaptorFan

aren’t the players listed above solid???  I had a dream last night that we somehow go Josh Smith……I would be willing to take the risk….. even if he walks!  I would include TRoss (his value is pretty high after winning the dunk contest)…..check this out

        http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine/?tradeId=b8qkt6n

Make it happen BC…. even throw in a 2nd rounder!  If Smith doesnt re-sign we clear up $$ to go after a free agent in the summer.  I like this because Landry Fields can go back to his natural position at SG….we get to try out JSmooth for the rest of the season!

        Thoughts?

        • Ball Don’t Lie

Lol, sorry but winning a dunk contest does NOTHING for a player’s trade value

    • Steve

Absolutely agree with getting boozer mlse is the one paying and no free agent comes to Toronto for max-like deals so who cares about the cap issue? As long as we make playoffs I’m totally fine with it

    • unknown guest

Well, if he is as bad as you say, then who would trade for him?

    • NyAlesund

Poor you, another season with Bargs……………………………………………….

      • RaptorFan

poor me??  lol…. you’re the one who has to spend another year defending him! Poor you my friend!  Poor you….

I know you wanted to see him move on to greener pastures too….he’s been embarassing you with his play hasn’t he?

        • NyAlesund

I am not defending him. Simply I am saying that Bargs is a Raptors player, so until then is useless to blame him even for his presence. The new NBA deal about the salaries is more tough and the teams don’t want to pay the luxury. This is one of the reasons why Bargs didn’t move.

I am not embarassing about his performaces, but now, the good thing to do is use his talent…………..until the end of this f……. season.

      • Guest

Says the guy who’s willing to give up Ross for Boozer, because according to him Ross is at his highest value right now.   Whether or not Ross will be any good, pretty sure the Bulls would trade Boozer for nothing if they could.  You would give Babcock a run for the money.

  • RaptorFan

What about this trade?  We get rid of Bargs….take back Kris Hump, Marshon Brooks and Tyshaun Taylor…it seems to work.  Kris Hump would be a 12 million expiring contract next year — i’m guessing we save roughly 6-7 million??

    http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=autq98b

Same trade but with JL3 included to re-unite him with his buddy watson…looks like we save even more $$$…gives Brooklyn a veteran 3rd string PG

    http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=amwh49t

    • BlakeMurphy

Doubt Brooklyn sees Bargs as that valuable. They were trying to get Josh Smith for Hump+Brooks+pick, I really doubt they’d turn around and settle for Bargs.

      • RaptorFan

What about JL3 included??  And they get to save a pick!  Come on Blake…..we both know Hump and Evans are redundant….and evans is cheaper for 2 more years!  Bargs gives them another option to go beside Lopez…..I would do it :)

    • arsenalist

The difficulty in trading Bargnani stems from the other team wanting to win more games than they lose.

        lol

LMAO ….sooo true…. thats why we have to take on higher salary to get rid of him

  • Mark

Ok so it’s likely we pick up Telfair.. denial is turning into reluctant acceptance. But, what are we picking him up for? He can’t really shoot. His defense is terrible. His primary skill is… ball handling? We seem to be picking him up for no reason except he is a body to play PG. Couldn’t have Haddadi gotten this deal done rather than throwing a second rounder as well?

    • BlakeMurphy

My thoughts exactly. 2nd rounder should probably have some protections on it.

      • Mark

Sam Amick reported it is protected second rounder.. good news, kind of.

    • Dan

Apparently he also trains with Rudy, Lowry and Anderson in the off season. BC figures friendship trumps talent. Maybe he thinks it will help with chemistry. Or he is trying to set an NBA record for fg%.

      • 2damkule

or maybe he’s just trying to put together an nba team the same way children choose up sides on the playground.

BECAUSE IT IS TOTALLY THE SAME THING.

    • Guest

No, because I doubt the Suns are making the deal because they actually want Haddadi.  It’s Telfair and absorbing Haddadi for us in exchange for the second round pick.

    • Guest

Also, is his defense really that terrible?  This year, he’s held opposing PGs to 12.2 PER, and last year to 13.2 PER.  While last year’s on/off split is downright terrible for some reason, this year, the Suns gave up 6.9 fewer points per 100 possessions with Telfair on the floor.  Lowry, by comparison, is giving up 15.8 PER to opposing PGs, and the Raptors are giving up 2.1 more points per 100 possessions when he is on the floor.  And in case you’re wondering, the Raptors and Suns are almost identical in defensive rating this year.

      • BlakeMurphy

        Get out.

    • BlakeMurphy

Improvement, but at a pretty hefty cost (he makes $5M more than Bargs each year and his contract is just as long). Raps would essentially be committed to DD-RG-AJ-LF-CB-TR-JV in 2014-15 and they’d already be right at the cap with just those guys.

      • 2damkule

‘improving’ to a slightly higher level of mediocrity….fringe playoff team (at best) with little-to-no wiggle room to make improvements.
they’d HAVE to play boozer significant minutes just because of how much they’re paying him (meaning reduced minutes for guys who would, y’know, help the team win), and outside of thibs’ system, he’s about as bad as they come defensively.

  • Nilanka15

Blake, did I read on Twitter that you liked Expendables and the Fast & Furious franchise?  Sheesh.

    • BlakeMurphy

Fact: The Expendables and the F&F movies (except Tokyo drift) are cinematic masterpieces.

      • 2damkule

        it’s science.

      • Nilanka15

Strangely enough, I thought Tokyo Drift was the 2nd best of the five movies.  Hated all the others except the original.

There’s something about car chases and CGI that don’t mix well.

        • BlakeMurphy

Yeah, I mean…they’re BAD movies, but they’re great entertainment. Sometimes I need to just turn my brain off for two hours and bro-out.

        • unknown guest

I thought Tokyo Drift would have been better on it’s own rather than get attached to the franchise.

        • Sig

Oh come on, the second was the most popular one by far. Some great acting.

      • unknown guest

        What! Tokyo Drift was awesome!

  • FAQ

In hindsight, Bargs doesn’t fit on the current edition of the Ratpors because…. the Rats don’t run any plays; they just scurry about like rodents…. when they have the ball in their hands.

Bargs and the other bigs, who don’t have the ball in their hands, are dependent on plays for them, otherwise they just pick up the garbage while KL, RG, DDR, Lucas do their thing with abandon.  The Rats don’t run plays, they just play streetball…. soooo obvious.

  • ezz_bee

It seems like every trade deadline is more hype than outcome.  I think it’s exacerbated this year because of team’s trying to adjust to the new CBA.

I’m surprised the mavs haven’t had more been involved in more rumours considering they seem to be the one team willing to take on money.

    • BlakeMurphy

I think the last three deadlines have averaged 8 trades with 24 players involved. Today is ESPECIALLY quiet. You’re right though that it’s probably CBA-related.

    • unknown guest

At least it’s not trade deadline NHL on tsn.

  • ezz_bee

Also, I guess seabass isn’t necessarily going to jump JLIII on the depth chart and that he’s just a depth move.

  • ezz_bee

I’m sure Chicago would include one of their non rose pgs in a bargs-boozer deal.  If we were willing to take back Hammyton we could probably unload Kleiza as well.

    • ezz_bee

Unless chicago thinks Hamilton has any value.  Which I don’t think he does.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Junior-Maurice/551625103 Junior Maurice

why don’t we do the bargani for boozer deal, that is the best deal we can possibly get for him

    • ezz_bee

Maybe chicago thought that we’d include a draft pick, and we thought chicago was going to throw in the draft pick, and the two sides are just too far apart on the value of their respective players

    • my_azz

because it would trade a problem for an older, very more expensive problem, to say nothing of what other asset Chicago wanted, and we know nothing about.

Well I guess Haddadi had to be of some use.

  • IROR

I like Bassy as a depth guy.  He’s not going to do much, but he’s a vet.  Brings some size and depth to the PG spot, good ball handler.  And he is a NYC streetball legend, not that it counts for anything.

Maybe, we’ll have this version of Telfair, just for ooohs and aaaahs. http://youtu.be/xNIuy2w842Y

Well, at least he’s closer to home.

+ insurance if either KLow or JL3 gets injured

The Telfair deal is a big meh, but gets the Raps something (a 3rd PG to play out the string this season), for nothing (Haddidi was never going to see the floor here), for the same cost of expiring contract. If a 2nd rounder is included, who cares? 99% of 2nd rounders end up playing on another continent or never get past the D League.

  • Bam!

    Reddick to bucks!

    • FAQ

This trade will strengthen the Bucks and diminish the TRats chances for playoffs….. unless Telfair can quickly deevelop into a fine PG…..

  • ghost

Raps are screwed…Reddick is going to the Bucks.

  • ghost

WOW…talk about a disapointing trade deadline for the leaugue.

I am disappointed in Toronto Raptor fans. The hatred being directed towards Bargnani is not only insensitive, but comical.

I ask all the Andrea haters this: If he turns it around and produces for this team, will you suddenly cheer for him?

No human being deserves this kind of treatment. Yes he is a millionaire, but if the shoe were on the other foot, you wouldn’t like being trashed and booed at your own place of work.

    Sickening….smh.

    • RaptorFan

I’m not an Andrea hater…..i’m more of a useless player hater…..BUT I think I can answer your question as a Raptor Fan.

YES, we will cheer for him if he stops playing like GARBAGE and starts playing up to his potential.  YES, we will cheer for him if he suddenly and miraculously turns it around and produces for OUR team.

You are such a FANBOY — its comical!  Get a life man….this is life in the world of sports!!

Andrea is NOT the first and will NOT be the last player to be booed and trashed for playing like garbage.  Vince Carter was one of the best players we’ve ever had and he gets booed like crazy.  Chris Bosh was also one of the best players we’ve ever had and he gets booed too.  Lebron James is one of the best players EVER and he gets booed when he goes back to Cleveland.

This is reality….this is now the raps reality.  Wake up and get used to it.  We support our team and with doing so allow our players to make millions of dollars.  We can boo him if we want to!  ESPECIALLY when he’s playing the way he’s played this year — no heart, no effort, no determination = NO LOVE from non-fanboys!

      • rapsreality

Booing a player only to cheer for him later = douche

      • my_azz

Why people so staunchly defend actually wanting to behave like boorish cavemen will forever confound me, but the senselessness of doing so toward an active member of your team, is the most mind boggling.

Though I don’t even understand why someone would even demand the right to publicly behave as crude oafs toward the likes of  VC, Bosh, LeBron that you cite, these are all FORMER players. This is quite different than doing the idiotic booing thing toward an active member of the team,,,,,,,, fuck,,,,,,, even as he was coming back from a 2 month injury recovery. Like what kind of fools do that? DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH.

Do any of these missing links know what the rest of the team thinks of these “fans of the team”? This may be hard for some simple minds to comprehend, but there’s actually members of that team that have worked in the gym every day with the guy for years, along the way both laughed and cried along with him, and think he’s a pretty good guy. When you speak of SUPPORTING your team, even setting aside the obvious damage your trying to do to him, what do you think that infantile behaviour does to the spirit of those other players of YOUR team? I can think of a few very likely possibilities that don’t help your teams short term, or long term, chances.

Mind boggling, it really is. Demand the right to act like simpler minded missing links, so that you can inflict psychological bullying upon the team you “support”. Doh

          Hey HOMER

What a waste of words! Why don’t you buy a ticket so that you can cheer for this “poor wounded and defenseless” athlete?? Maybe you’d be able to drown out the boos and save him?? DOH

          • my_azz

I hope your grandchildren will evolve beyond boorish oaf.

  • dddday99

Quincy Acy  is better than boozer, he deserves way more playing time.

Bargnani is poison for this team

    • FAQ

Concomitantly …. the team is poisonous for Bargs … ya think??!!!

Bargnani and Colangelo have a deal. Bargs will leave the Rapts in the summer. So, hold your nose for a while.

  • FAQ

We got Sebastian Telfair… and together with Demar DeRozan and Rudolph Gay …. we are the champions ..!!!!

  • CraptorsHater

Toronto is  a funny place. You have a big man which can shoot and is a good player in the paint, but the coach forces him to stay at the 3 point line only blocking for people without shoot like DD, at the same time you pretend also rebounds but he must stay too far away and cannot get one, he NEVER get a GOOD pass, NEVER. But you are blaming him all the time.
Unbelievable, you relly prefer people like DD or TR which can only jump like cangaroos and have no bb-iq.
    Fantastic.
