Toronto Raptors 103 Final
Recap | Box Score
112 Golden State Warriors
Tyler Hansbrough, PF 29 MIN | 1-4 FG | 0-1 FT | 9 REB | 3 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 2 PTS | +7

Got the start and had a solid defensive game. Really competed in the first half despite this not exactly being the grind of a game that he’s best suited for. Things got a little more difficult in the second half with O’Neal there to match the physical presence, but nothing to complain about given his role on the team. Also, him trying to post-up 18-feet out isn’t his fault, it’s lack of direction.

Rudy Gay, SF 34 MIN | 6-12 FG | 5-6 FT | 4 REB | 0 AST | 2 STL | 0 BLK | 5 TO | 18 PTS | +2

Converted a lot of his isolation sequences, again, mostly in the first three quarters. Yes, he’s playing a lot of me-ball but when you look at the sets the Raptors are running, it’s not like he’s continuously ignoring teammates – that’s what the play appears to be designed to do: have Rudy go one-on-one! I can’t believe he lost that jumpball in the fourth. More shockingly, I can’t understand why, despite having the physical tools and the skill, he is not a more consistent defender. He talks about being a “team leader”, well that usually starts on the defensive side and he’s shoddy at best.

Jonas Valanciunas, C 27 MIN | 4-7 FG | 0-0 FT | 6 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 3 TO | 8 PTS | -4

Started well but got hit with a couple fouls that weren’t necessarily of his doing, Struggled defensively against O’Neal and was unable to produce anything in the post with O’Neal in there. This was one of those games where it became more evident how much he needs to get strong physically before he’s considered a legitimate force.

Kyle Lowry, PG 38 MIN | 7-13 FG | 4-4 FT | 4 REB | 9 AST | 2 STL | 0 BLK | 3 TO | 20 PTS | +3

Solid game, really solid. Took it hard at Curry, distributed beautifully in the half-court and transition, and played excellent defense up-top. He was coaxed into taking desperation/bad shots late in the game when the offense died due to zero movement, but I won’t hold that against him.

DeMar DeRozan, SG 43 MIN | 10-18 FG | 4-5 FT | 0 REB | 3 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 3 TO | 26 PTS | -18

The go-to man for the Raptors delivered in the fourth on several occasions, but isolation plays will only get you so far, eventually you’ll have to play team-ball to sustain success. Much like Gay in this game, I’m not blaming DeRozan by any means for taking questionable one-on-one shots, it’s entirely due to to the structure of our “offense” that those shots are produced.

Amir Johnson, PF 33 MIN | 7-10 FG | 2-2 FT | 10 REB | 1 AST | 1 STL | 1 BLK | 2 TO | 16 PTS | -18

Produced big time in the bench role. Struggled a little early but then took full advantage of the pick ‘n roll situations he found himself in. Drained a couple open jumpers, but then again, took that horrible three with the game tight very late on. Once again, I lay the blame on Casey, not the player.

Landry Fields, SF 4 MIN | 0-1 FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | +6

No idea he even played.

Steve Novak, SF 11 MIN | 3-6 FG | 0-0 FT | 1 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 9 PTS | -13

Hit a huge set of threes in the first half to really give the Raptors momentum, but had no business starting the fourth quarter where no plays were run for him at all. The Raptors essentially played 4-on-5 for the first part of the fourth as Novak was like a chicken with its head cut off. Blame Casey.

Julyan Stone, SG 10 MIN | 0-1 FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | -12

Good defense overall on Curry, some of the high trapping in the second half was questionable as it led to open threes for the Warriors but I’m guessing that’s by instruction.

Terrence Ross, SG 10 MIN | 2-5 FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 4 PTS | +2

Disappointing game for him because you’d think this type of tempo might suit him. I was surprised to see him get the hook so soon, and somewhat undeservedly. I thought he was needed at the start of the fourth, not Novak.

Dwane Casey

He rode the hot-shooting to a big lead, but then did not make a single adjustment to preserve that lead. Starting Novak against a gunning GSW offense in the fourth was silly, the out-of-timeout plays in the fourth were all isos, the decision to leave their three-pointers open to trap the PG was appalling. He’s not long for this job. This is how I envision him.

Five Things We Saw

  1. The Raptors blew a third quarter 27-point, and a fourth quarter 18-point lead.
  2. The defensive decisions made in the second half were shocking. Other than Lowry, Stone, and Hansbrough, the defense was porous for the entire game. The random doubling of their lethal backcourt is what got the Warriors back in it. I mean, allowing 42 fourth quarter points? C’mon, I mean, c’mon?!
  3. Don’t let the high shooting percentages (65% in first quarter) fool you – we only had 17 assists and that’s because we are still a very one-on-one offense that relies on players getting hot instead of a plan.
  4. I’m at a loss to figure out just exactly what coaching is happening on this team. Our offense is a mess and our defense is highly inconsistent, despite this being the third year Casey has been in charge. The management talks about having an identity but so far this team has none. The only identity Casey ever formed was in his first season where he killed the pace, and installed a giant rock in the lockerroom. Since then, nothing. It’s like his message, if he has one, is falling on deaf ears.

Plus imagine landing wiggins , randle or parker without making a single trade this season. I know you would sleep nice for years to come aftrr that . Let it happen guys were not doing anything even if we made it to the playoffs this year … just let it happen #tanknation

    • mike, prague

No hurry. We’re in tankin’ mode. Dec 15th is THE date my friends.

  • Anon

Defense was bad but holy fucking Jesus – the 4th Q showed what a difference it is to have an actual offence where plays are run, the ball is passed and there are relatively easy buckets or open looks.

The Raptors’ playbook consists of the following: Jonas post up for the first touch of the game (ignore after as you please), Lowry step back 3 and the Rudy Gay/Demar Derozan option iso.

this game was so bad that i literally feel numb .. why dwane casey leave Julian Stone in so long in the 4th just baffles me. Why is that scrub even playing, the guy can’t shoot can’t obviously defend, cant dribble, and is a momentum changer every time on the court even in the preseason. All i want for christmas is a real damn coach, can you do that for me santa for god sakes

    • DDayLewis

      Regarding the Stone thing:

Lowry crashed into Bogut in the third and needed some time to recover.

      • Antoine Rose

I rather scrub minutes from DJ or buycks then stone

        • DDayLewis

Really? Would you? They’re all horrible. At least Stone played some decent on-ball defense.

          • FREEJV

at least stone can make a shot…. oh wait nvm .-.

            • DDayLewis

Lol none of them could make a shot.

              • Antoine Rose

i haven’t seen julian stone make a shot, ever .. did he even get a point today … Mind as well have aaron grey at point, cause he prob will score more then stone. Dont forget stone missed an open corner three in the fourth, and when i said open i mean KIM K open and missed it. FIRE DWAYNE CASEY

                • Junior Qamar

Air Grey at back up point. Down!!

  • desktom

I knew we were losing this game with three minutes left in the third. Nobody went to the hoop. Standing around and jacking up contested 18 footers. Jonas not playing Ross not playing nobody going to the basket all of the second half lolololol this has seriously got to be some kind of fucking joke that the Raptors are playing on their fans . I could have coached that game home . Nobody shoots outside of six feet every play down low we win simple as that . Jonas oh where art thou Jonas !!

  • Adriiian

Garbage!!!! This set of players we have, with the coach, it’s just an overall bad combination.
    Let’s go Masai.

    • Amigo

      • DanH

This guy thinks he’d have a choice if management isn’t completely useless. Get this man some help.

        • TrollingYOU

contracts expire bro, Wiggins will bolt for greener pastures like every star ever in this franchise

          • DanH

Bro, if he’s a superstar, and Raps are smart, they can guarantee contractual control over him for 9 years before he has a chance to bolt. Bro.

          • http://www.wearingfilm.com/picketfence/ Tim W.

If you think it’s pointless to try and get a star player because he’ll bolt, then what’s the point of having a team? What if the Raptors actually, you know, build a decent team around someone like Wiggins? Wiggins will only (eventually) bolt if the Raptors keep making stupid decisions. And if they keep making stupid decisions, then nothing is going to change their fortunes.

  • Antoine Rose

I’m still in disbelief .. like I’m looking at the scoreboard thinking it’ll change .. the worst part is we lost by almost double figures

  • FREEJV

why did novak only play like 2 minutes in 2nd half casey you retard they kept doubling demar cuz amir and tyler couldnt do shit on offense should ve put rudy at 4 and novak at 3 but oh well here we come wiggins

  • Jam

Ujiri is a genius…he knew he didn’t need to change the roster in order for us to tank…just leave Casey in charge and watch the magic happen. On a team with actual basketball talent, Amir took a 3 pointer at the games most crucial moment. That’s just amazing.

    • Amigo

Ujiri suck big time my friend, otherwise Gay was already gone around last summer. He is just a Salesman

      • wtfraps

you are not my Amigo. you are a dummy

            • Plus

MU is a genius. He knew the Raptors would implode. lol

    • Bears

      I agree 100%.
      Keep Casey and Gay.
      Trade Lowry and DD.

      #Tank

      • Junior Qamar

Ur an idiot dd doesnt contribute to wins trading him doesnt mean n e thing just mean we lost a solid 2nd or 3rd peiece to a good team what r u going to do when we land wiggins make him play alongside gay!? Derozan is good but I dont think trading him would make us better or worse hes a neutral player, keeping him to team up with someone like wiggins or randle would benefit us more. Trade gay or amir if u wanna see more losses.

        • Bears

First, no need to be rude.

Second, you’re information has no basis and is inaccurate. DD is ranked second in the team with “Wins-Score” as per Basketball-Reference behind Kyle Lowry. I would agree with trading Amir (4th in Wins-Score). Now regardless of what think of of “win-score”, it has more basis than fan opinion.

Third, DD has value and is tradable. Gay has value but his contract is going to be very difficult to trade while netting any useful asset in return. His tradability is theoretically much improved next year (assuming he picks up his 19M option) as he would be an expiring contract.

  • Phat AlberG

All I want for christmas is for Casey to be fired!

  • Macayita

MU can’t no wait more to fire Casey…. is the worse Coach in the NBA….

  • Rap fan 2

That was pretty bad!! They stopped ball movement in 4th quarter. They didn’t try calling enough time outs to shift momentum change. It is what it is. The Raptors were not good enough to beat the Warriors.

  • canadaeh

I think I am going to join Bobcatsrepublic.com now. I feel like a heavy weight boxer in the 11th round of a losing fight. I am about to start becoming a soccer fan.

HEY GUYS RUDY FINALLY SHOT 50% 😀 lmao

    • Louvens Remy

hahahahahaha. this site makes this collapse worth it!!

    • rtz

      hahahahaahah

  • mike, prague

    11 days left!!!

  • GSUSCRYS

Our closer RUDY GAY really stepped up in crunch time

  • Captain_Dog

I think Masai will fire Casey before December 15th at this rate.

I’m salivating at the potential tear-down that we’re going to see between the 15th of December all the way to the trade deadline; my only worry is that trading Rudy and firing Casey will result in us actually WINNING games and making the 4th seed due to the Atlantic being so incredibly weak.

    • canadaeh

It would work out if we get the draft pick of any team Gay gets traded to…. Guaranteed lottery pick. This dickwad will send Miami to the lottery if he gets traded there…. Fuck I’m mad.

      • Captain_Dog

That’s an excellent point. Yeah, chuckers are the worst; whether they’re on your pick-up team at the local gym or on the team that you root for with everything you have, they are the absolute fucking worst….

How do you even put up grades after this???

I agree with everything said here, but I want to add that Demar looked really good tonight and that is a huge plus. On another bright side, if this isn’t a slap in the face to management then I don’t know what is. What’s the point of watching another Raptor game for the rest of the season if this is how it’s going to be?

    • Amigo

It’s not a slap in the face, they GOT RAPED TONITE. They werent tanking, they were going for the PO this morons

  • rtz

can someone help me out please…what the hell does a GM do?

    • Jam

If Casey is still head coach when we return from the road trip, then we know that Ujiri is tanking this year. It takes a special kind of coach to give up a 27 point lead and lose by 9.

  • Louvens Remy

I hope Zarar doesn’t put up any grades. Just an A+ for Lowry and DD.

    • DDayLewis

      Refresh the page

      • Louvens Remy

Wow. most of those were very generous.

  • Blanco

If we held the ball for the full 24 seconds on every play in the fourth quarter and didnt score a single point…we would of won…thats a fact

    • Timmay

No it really isnt, you are stupid and you should watch a more simple sport… like archery

    • FREEJV

not really it was a 6 possession game go back to grade 1 math man

      • Blanco

sorry, i meant once we were up 27 points…and relax..its a fucking joke…obviously turn overs etc would make a difference..point is..casey is garbage…ur probably siting in ur basement studying math now for ur highschool exam that you will in all likely hood fail and end up working at footlocker ur whole life…fucking loser

Ha ha. Maybe you should coach. I like that strategy better than one I just watched.

    • Amigo

      Unless you turn it over

  • AB4EYE

This should be Casey’s last game after blowing these two massive leads the last two games and being out coached countless times.

You just had to know we were screwed when Amir and Novak was hitting in the second half and he was going to ride those guys way to long and change the unit that was taking it to GSW. After the second good start in as many games since the starters change he iced Tyler and ran Amir into the ground playing him for the final 15:38 of the first half, the production worked and Amir played good but its not what was working and burned up his energy.

Speaking of Tyler you have to give him the ball at least some so he can draw some fouls and keep the defense honest. He took 4 shots 2 came off offensive rebounds and of the other two one he didn’t even want to shoot but nobody came and got the ball from him out by the 3 point line and he was forced to dive and attempt to make something happen. When they know he isn’t getting the ball the can double our duel black holes. Playing 5 on 4 against a good team isn’t going to work especially when their 5 is already better than ours. He’s taken 8 shots as a starter and at least half of them have came off the glass, if he was a elite shot blocker that could work but he’s not so it a must to give him a few touches.

Amir had a great first half but didn’t do jack with all his extra PT after that hot start and was a game high -18 after -16 last game and O’Neal owned him in the second half . JV plays good with Tyler but after that hot start we didn’t get to see much of them together due to fouls and Amir’s extra PT and it cost us the game. Those two guys were a big part of building up the lead with Hansbrough getting the rare 3 assists and JV getting lots or touches early opening things up for Kyle, DD and Gay.

Seriously Jonas took 4 shots and made 3 when in with in first 5 of the game and only shoots 3 more time the next 43 of the game. Don’t be afraid to led him and Tyler work together they both will attack the rim if one missed the other will likely be there to fight for the miss, let them get teams in foul trouble and let them take the pressure off the other 3 guys rather than the predicable ISO’s and jumpers.

Rudy shot it good but was back to zero assists and added in 5 TO. Kyle and DD were good on offense but got tons of jumpers in their eyes throughout the night.

Novak can shoot 100% and you’re not going to win with him unless you outscore teams because he has no defense and can’t rebound, he filled it up in points but still a -13. Julyan Stone needs to be in the D-League, did I miss some Augustin injury or something? Why hasn’t DJ got a real shot after his good 4th quarter the other day!

Whoever the starting 2 bigs are they need to be allowed to take shots, at least get some pick and rolls or screens or something. We need more egg timer type substitutions to get out best unit on the floor the most when we fall into broken up units it tends to blow up on us, our big guys never get sure PT one night it could be 38 the next 18.

Between that and no shots they can’t pace themselves or settle into games. We need to limit Novak to certain situations and not steady extended PT, seems like we was playing better without him. We need a real reserve PG and it should be DJ for at least 10 games before dumping him and most importantly we need to trade Gay for anything.

    • Timmay

“Speaking of Tyler you have to give him the ball at least some so he can draw some fouls and keep the defense honest”

Yeah.. you lost me after this… so uneducated

      • AB4EYE

Tyler gets fouled like a superstar when given the ball. If every time he touches it comes off the offensive glass you lose one of his biggest strengths. Teams know he isn’t going to shoot a jumper on them and if he does its probably not going in so they don’t have to worry about him on offense and they can clamp down our wings.

I was pissed and wrote all that up in a hurry so it may not be the best constructed writhing in the world but the point is legit. Its 5 on 4 or basically 5 on 3 when we refuse to give the ball to Tyler or JV for extended periods of play.

        • Smile E. Coyote

Sorry, I’m posting as a guest. Frequent reader but never commented – so, no account.

Anyway, I’m with you AB4EYE. Hansbrough’s talent often gets overlooked or downplayed for no reason, often because his hustle (a huge commodity in professional sports) is overemphasized. Sure, he was dominant at UNC. No one is expecting him to be dominant in the NBA because I don’t think he can be. However, that shouldn’t be confused with saying he doesn’t have any skill or talent. You don’t become the leading scorer in UNC or ACC history based off of luck or physical stature. Even at 6′ 9″ he wasn’t the biggest guy in college basketball. Remember, he had a better-than-expected draft combine? Measuring better than most people thought? Anyone also remember that weird shot-put he would do all the time in college that earned him so many and-1s? He is skilled and he does have some good touch around the basket.

In Toronto, however, he’s not being put in the position to succeed. Neither is JV nor Amir. All three can produce when given the opportunity. It’s unfortunate that most of their attempts are from offensive rebounds or broken plays with no other options. I am glad, however, that during the two starts for Hansbrough, the team had come out swinging. We should keep up that energy. Hansbrough did show positive results when he started on the few occasions for Indy.

We need to focus on the problem: coaching. Someone needs to get DD and Gay on board. We need to run plays for our bigs. We need to stop having Amir shoot the three. All three of our bigs are solid. They need touches!!!!

    • gradgrind101

No matter how big the lead, the end of the bench gets garbage time late in the fourth quarter when the game is done not half way through the third. It looks like Casey takes too long to make decisions because he is not quick enough to digest what is going on and counter it with appropriate action that the players can execute.

  • Paul

And here I’ve been doubting my boy Masai.
I thought we needed to jettison talent to tank but Masai knew better. He knew he had the right horses all along.

What pissed me off most though wasn’t that we lost, but the smug faces of all our players. Those guys should have been screaming at each other in the 4th quarter. It’s like no one wants to take ownership of this team, coach included, it’s good when it’s good but when it’s bad everyone just walks away. That’s not good for a team, and as a city we deserve more.

  • rtz

INSIDER RECAP OF FINAL TIME OUT FOR THE RAPTORS
Casey walks on court towards players with clipboard and a spinner (like from grade 4 math classes)

“ok boys…I realized that when we walked in the building we didn’t map out our emergency exit plan in case of fire so let me draw out for you guys on this board the emergency exits and the quickest exit routes…(drawing arrows as he is talking) Demar you go that way, Rudy that way, kyle you will be in the back court so you have options between this exit this exit and this exit…
now…let me take out my spinner (flick…spin spin spin) ok Amir you take the shot)”

I want to say he is the worst coach in the NBA but I think he and Jason Kidd are 1 and 1a

    • Junior Qamar

Thankyou for that hahaha and agreed but let him coach us to wiggins then fire his ass maybe he’ll get on tsn like sam if hes lucky cuz no1 is hiring him aftr this haha

    • robertparrish00

Jason Kidd did the spill the drink thing, so that is a plus 1 over Casey.

  • Captain_Dog

    Coach Casey during every timeout…

“Alright guys, Jonas, you’re torching them fools! You sit, Novak? You’re in at the 4, we’re going small! Alright boys, from this inbounds play, we’re going to get the ball to Rudy, I want everyone to spread out, and Rudy, I want you shoot a long contested two pointer! Alright, pound the rock!”

    • Captain_Dog

      *Raps down by three*

Casey: Alright guys, Jonas, you’re torching them fools! You sit, Novak? You’re
in at the 4, we’re going small! Alright boys, from this inbounds play,
we’re going to get the ball to Rudy, I want everyone to spread out, and
Rudy, I want you shoot a long contested two pointer! Alright, pound the
      rock!”

Landry Fields: “Umm Coach? we’re down by three…”

      Casey: “Fuck you Landry.”

  • Mexiballer

Thats what happens when you dont have a real offence with multiple scoring threats and sharing the ball. Once the defensive pressure gets cranked up your screwed.

  • d_1212

Casey isn’t a head coach period. The team is badly constructed. Not too impressed by Jonas either, Jermaine O’Neal seemed he was back playing in his Portland/Indiana days, dunking and blocking shots all over., and getting into Jonas head.

    • beaverboi

Didn’t watch the game and kept reading posts about O’Neal killing it. Couldn’t think which O’Neal until this post. Really? Jermaine? The guy that is almost 50 and no knees???

      • d_1212

        Yup, Jermaine…

  • Paul

I actually went on Doug Smith’s in game blog at the end of this game (for the first time in years) just to troll him with very naive questions like “How can the Raptors look to improve following this defeat” and “What positives can we take from this game”

Even that shill wasn’t having it. baahahaha

    • Captain_Dog

      You glorious bastard.

    • Chronicled

Doug is a typical media hack who’s afraid to say anything that might offend anybody in fear of jeopardizing future needed relations. The worst.

      • Plus

Soooooo hate Doug Smith… wished that guy would just retire already. Why is that the Basketball guys in the media are afraid to say anything while the hockey guys are quickly down someones throat??

        • TTTTIMAYYYYY

Because people in Canada are severely uneducated when it comes to basketball

          Dude that response was genius

  • Phat AlberG

If casey is such defensive specialist how come we always blow big leads?

  • FrustratedFan

Man, say what you will about Landry Fields, but the dude is at least SMART and tries to do the right things, cant say the same about the rest of the raptors organization, guys in the truck included

    • higdale

Yes Fields is smart and played good D on Klay Thompson when he was in. Play the kid for extended minutes the Raptors need some one to keep the ball moving. They can’t crack 20 assist 18 tonight.

  • Jam

I’m pretty sure in every time out, Casey just writes “Pound the Rock” on the clip board, and the Raps head out on the floor dazed and confused….except Amir because his dyslexia reads it as “Shoot a 3, you are Ray Allen”

    • Paul

    • Jam

that’s why im still commenting, im fuming. alteast last year you could say “oh bargnani screwed us” or “rudy isnt used to the system”….this year its just sad

      • tanknation

note…bargnani is having a pretty decent season now that he left us

        • Jam

yea i noticed that, but i kind off thought he would. he’s a god awful franchise player and #1 option, but a pretty solid #3 option. One thing hasn’t changed tho, his good pay has zero effect on wins, that he learned in Toronto

            play*

        • Paul

Ya, if you don’t look at his on-off defensive numbers which basically say the Knicks are playing 5 on 4 when he’s on the court..

Raptors are playing 3 v 5 when Gay and TH are on the court, I know it seems impossible but its true

THEY ALL LEFT FOR A REASON

We have to pay Rudy Gay and Dumb*** Derozan a combined 30 mil because they give off the illusion of being stars when in reality even MJ wouldnt want them on the bobcraps

We sit two promising young players night in and night out so we can watch Kyle lowry dribble up the court and jack up a 3 and psycho T stand around like a moron on offence

lol Paul, if cheering for this team will make you tell others to punch kids then you need help man… seriously. The highlight that this franchise has given you as a fan is a free slice of pizza when they score 100 points, and I think they won 1 playoff series in almost 2 decades. but thats it, focus on whats important in life man, I feel bad for you

    • tanknation

you think psycho T and Lowry are the problem? did you watch the game?

    • johng_3

Bosh left to join LeBron and DWade. Like who wouldn’t? T-Mac wanted his own team, instead of being under VC’s shadow. And we booed VC out of Toronto and VC was traded.

Holy shit. I thought he was funny but I didn’t realize Tee/RTZ/Canadaeh/FreeJV a personality disorder. My bad dunny. Just don’t stick your head in the toilet tonight. If you do, don’t chew on the brown pieces.

  • Jam

The only positive press that the Raps got this offseason was how amazing JVal could be this year…but how the hell is he supposed to develop if we don’t run offence through him…don’t play him in the 4th….and DON’T RUN PICK AND ROLLS! It’s his specialty and been effective for 50 years. We need to just rebuild. Even if this team gets its shit together, whats our max upside? Last years Hawks?

    • YouAreAGenius

      “Last Years Hawks”

You sir are an absolute Genius

  • ad

I genuinely feel bad for anti tankers with this loss. The whole team collapsed in the 4th q. No movement on Offense, just standing around, DD missed some crucial rebounds. Thankfully i am aboard the tank and this loss doesnt upset me at all. If anything, it should expedite change, which this team needs BAD.

  • gradgrind101

Let me start by saying Casey is not a dummy and he knows the game. He is a class act and deserves respectful criticism.

Now for the criticism…From what I saw he took way to long to call a timeout and get the players back into the groove that built the lead to 27 points. Once the Raptors had the big lead they were content to slowly walk the ball into a prepared Golden State defense. The hand-off reverses ended…The ball movement ended..The open shots ended…Spacing ended…Movement without the ball ended…And so all the Warrior defense had to do was put a player or two on the ball and be ready to quickly collapse on all penetration drives or shots..

Meanwhile on defense we were closing out on 3 pointers from too far away… We weren’t covering the first pass…We weren’t boxing out..We stopped hedging the screen…We started chasing the ball…Nobody stepped up to provide some muscle when Golden State had started their run.

Really there is no leadership on this team. Coz a leader would have put a Warrior or two on the floor. The players have already tuned Casey out and its easy to put all the blame on the coach but unless he does a Mike Tomlin and runs onto the court it’s the players who were the biggest reason why we lost.

    • SR

      Casey’s post game was disappointing.

His game break down, talking about missed rotations, lack of execution, and GSW getting hot from 3 – that doesn’t explain a 36 POINT SECOND HALF SWING. You just blew a 27 point 3rd quarter lead, man. The issues are much, much deeper.

I realize the message in the locker room may be totally different, but even with the media he should either be, a) honest, or b) pissed. That was a historically bad loss. Coaches get fired and players get traded for sh*t like this. It’s more than just “we didn’t execute our rotations, which was too bad because we played a great first half.”

Bad memories of 81 and spineless basketball. It starts at the top.

      • gradgrind101

Missed his post game. He knows he’s canned…Ujiri needs to figure out who should replace him and for what purpose. I like Casey as a basketball mind but as a coach he’s in over his head. Any decent coach (Thibodeau or Poppovich or RIvers or even Spoelstra) wouldn’t allow that spectacle to continue. They would explode and pop a vein out of anger. He seemed to be in shell shock and allowed the game to drift right by…

        • johng_3

These kind of situations can happen in a game with a blown lead but the thing is that this happens over and over with Casey. I only watched the first half but I had a sinking feeling that GS would somehow get back in it in the second half

  • AB4EYE

Hansbrough/Valanciunas our two starting big men took 2 shots in the second half with JV going 1-of-2 while Amir/Novak shot it 5 times making one.

    • Jam

Last year on the Knicks, Novak planted on the 3 point line and shot open attempts when the defence crumbled and the ball was kicked out to him…this year he’s going 1-on-1 and creating his own shot. To his credit he’s hitting the 3 ball, but c’mon…that’s not how u use a shooter. We run zero plays, we just hope someone gets hot and carries us to the finish line.

      • DanH

Exactly like Kapono when he came here.

        • Jam

Turkoglu too….even though he was supposed to be more than just a shooter, in Orlando he saw only well placed open jumpers when everyone collapsed on D12.

          • DanH

Turk’s issue was that he didn’t get the ball enough – with Jose and Jack here, he was never going to be that primary/secondary ball handler. His game was as a pick and roll ball handler. I don’t remember him running a single one while here. No Dwight didn’t help either.

  • Mexiballer

With that loss the Raptors went from 4th place in the Eastern Conference to 10th place. Such is the state of the Eastern conference.

Open letter from masai to raptor fans

    Dear raptor fans
My hands are tied. I tried to trade rudy gay but the best offer I got was a bag of potato chips. No one will even return my calls anymore about gay, not even the knicks. I also tried to call Dwayne but he changed his number and I can’t get a hold of him unless I actually go to a game but…C’mon…I don’t want to sit and actually have to watch this team. So….Please let me enjoy my pay cheque…I mean… pound the rock on the phones.

Dear Raptor fans we are tanking we will get Wiggins, Randle, Parker, Smart, or either Aaron Gordan next year. And coach Casey won’t get let go till the summer and we will get a experienced coach to replace him, Ohh and after December 15th our Tank plan will be clear to all.

  • Y’all_11

One game Fields gets minutes, next game Ross gets his, next game Bycks gets minutes, next game Stone gets minutes on and on. so confusing to understand Casey’s lineups. Clippers are a deep team and don’t change lineups and players nearly as much, these players must be confused as hell.

    • AB4EYE

Its got to be frustrating for them because Its frustrating for me and its not my career He needs to play them or not play them getting a few minutes here and there does none of them any good.

He does the same thing with the starting big men as well. The only sure thing each night is that’s he’s going to overplay at least 2 of Gay/DD/Kyle with some night all 3 getting over 36 MP a night.

    • Ernest Alexander

This team and coaching staff is only giving the illusion of trying to win. There is no way that DJ and Fields are buried on this bench behind (Bycks and Stone, who are D league players at best) rarely seeing playing time and when they do its with always with the backups. Both have too much experience, and have logged meaningful minutes on playoff teams. I could only agree with how they are being used if they were playing behind legit youthful players who had tremendous upside and needed development. Just an observation with limited info on what is truly this team’s goal for this season.

There is this blog that counted down the 50 most dubious moments in Raps history. It only went up to 2006, but you can probably add another 50 to that list. This franchise is nothing more than a punch line.

  • Craven Moorehead

blame jose and bargs you losers.

  • Adam

You do understand why they blew a huge third quarter lead and why Casey makes questionable decisions at the end of games, right? I mean isn’t it obvious the team is in tank mode? I think attacking Casey for all of this may be like shooting the messenger.

  • SuperiorFrench

    Defensive minded coach= 42 points.

  • OzRapsFan

    what a terrible fucking team

  • Junior Qamar

Raptors were not supposed to 2 win this game. They realized that in the 3rd quarter and gave it up this is tank nation and I think the roster knows it too #wiggins #randle . Make it happen nba.

  • DryDry

I watched until they were still up a dozen or so.

Went to bed thinking they can’t blow this.

    How could they blow this?

Just watched it on the PVR just now.

My neck is sore from shaking my head.

  • ppellico

    Wait! We Won???
Well…looking at the grading I see a winning team.
    So what is up?
I will tell you…just as Amor learned a few years ago…the entire team has become fantastic at staying away fron hard defense and fouls. STAY IN THE GAME…that is the goal.
Forget the Big D. Forget all that shit you are taught about playing defense, filljng up space, blocking out.
Just move aside…make a token show of defence…and then play offense!.Make a grunt, show like you really tried…but do NOT get fouled or you will see the bench.
Get yours! Think about the stats and the time played….NOT defense.
Stay in the game…don’t get called for fouls by playing tough basketball…just get yours.
Sorry Gray…but you don’t score. You ain’t a glory guy and for THAT you sit.
Look at the stats on defense. Poooor. Piss poor. Who couldn’t get 10 and 14 rebounds inside in 30 minutes of play?
It ain’t about defense. It ain;t about teamwork or getting you team the best opportunity.
Its about YOU looking good and getting yours.

  • golden

Unbelievable, yet predictable. Can’t wait to hear the Casey explanation for this one. Derozen & Lowry matched Curry & Thompson, JV matched Bogut, Gay matched Barnes, our bench matched their bench. OK, so that leaves one explanation: Hansbrough got outplayed by David Lee. Right, Dwayne? LOL.

  • Statement

I used to be a Raptors diehard (still check this site everyday), but I don’t watch the games anymore. Reading all the comments and putting myself in the shoes of the commenters, it looks like a good decisions.

    • Jam

You’ve got the right idea, I’m not watching this train wreak anymore either. Rudy doesn’t care about TO, he cares about his next contract. Casey is just lost, fears the team, isn’t developing JVal, and is just out of his element. He’s never had a team that’s “supposed” to win, so his weaknesses are being exposed more than ever. Sadly, our only real shoot at future success is Wiggins, someone who cares about the city and the team. If we are going to be mediocre, we might as well be bad. Trade out Rudy and Lowry, take back picks and a PF prospect, use the year to develop Jonas, and rebuild the right way.

    • Louvens Remy

I watched two other games this year. The Boston opener and parts of Atlanta. I vowed that I wouldn’t watch no more but got sucked into the Curry/Thompson web. I knew 27 points wasn’t enough. Then it started happening and I couldn’t stop laughing. I too am done watching, I will keep checking the site and boxscores but there is no way I am wasting 2 hrs watching this comedy troupe. I am now just waiting for the punchline.

  • Roarque

Somewhere in the league there needs to be a contender who covets Rudy Gay as a forth quarter closer. Somewhere in the league there needs to be a lottery bound team who covets a young bench player from the aforementioned contender who is willing to trade their 1st rounder in 2014 for that young bench player. Imagine that 1st Rounder landing at our feet in the next 20 days in a three way that includes Landry Fields. Then imagine the team finishing with 20 wins this season using Julyan Stone to replace Kyle Lowry who is traded along with Tyler Hansbrough ( they miss the big guy!) to Indiana for the Danny Grainger contract.
Now that would be a Merry Christmas for Everyone. Ho, Ho, Ho!!!

    • Louvens Remy

You know what, I hope we trade him back to Memphis for Ed Davis. That would be high comedy.

  • Hassan Mehmood Khan

this is the type of game that demands casey to get fired

  • KaioKev

I didn’t want the Raptors to tank this year and I really wanted them to try and win as much as possible. But after that embarrassing loss to the Nets and the blown 27-point lead to GSW I really don’t know anymore. Even though the coaching is questionable, Rudy Gay shooting too much and JV not getting the ball often enough, this team lacks character, confidence and the ability to play 48min of basketball.
