New Orleans Pelicans 101 Final
Recap | Box Score
108 Toronto Raptors
Patrick Patterson, PF Shot Chart 33 MIN | 7-11 FG | 5-6 FT | 6 REB | 2 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 22 PTS | +19Started in place of Amir Johnson and like Johnson used to when healthy, energized the team. His shot-making, especially from three, gave the Raptors a dimension that they generally lack with Johnson, and it didn’t even come at the expense of reduced defense. It’s time to talk about his $4.3M qualifying offer because this guy is a basketball player. Huge contributions on either side of halftime and all of them were winning plays.

Terrence Ross, SF Shot Chart 35 MIN | 5-8 FG | 0-0 FT | 4 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 14 PTS | +19He’s the greatest beneficiary of when the Raptors are move the ball. His job is then reduced to catching and shooting, which is what he’s become quite good at. Defensively, a bit meh, but you can afford to get away with a sub-par defensive performance against the Pelicans.

Jonas Valanciunas, C Shot Chart 30 MIN | 3-7 FG | 3-4 FT | 8 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 1 TO | 9 PTS | +17He was open on the pick ‘n roll 100% of the time and received the ball about 20% of it. Good enough I say, a strong performance I say, defensively competent I say, positional perfection I say. It helps that Davis isn’t a bruiser inside like Cousins, and if I had to pick Valanciunas’ strength between defending bulk versus defending mobility, I’d say he’s better at the latter.

Kyle Lowry, PG Shot Chart 39 MIN | 8-13 FG | 2-2 FT | 7 REB | 12 AST | 2 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 19 PTS | +19You can have a great influence on the game without being spectacular and Lowry was just that. Consistent creator, secure ball handling, responsible on the boards, and occasional but key shot-making. There’s often a criticism levied against him that he’s not a “true” point guard, and this game is counter-example to all that nonsense. Hope he stay healthy.

DeMar DeRozan, SG Shot Chart 40 MIN | 7-21 FG | 7-10 FT | 2 REB | 4 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 3 TO | 22 PTS | +5Did not like the defense one bit, not the initial cover, not the recovery, not the help, not the close-outs, nothing. I don’t mind him practicing his long-two game if the game’s hanging in the balance late, but there’s a time and place for everything, and when the team’s struggling and falling into bad habits, he needs to step up and set an example, not follow the trend. Way too many sub-par possessions on both ends of the court for me to be generous with him.

Tyler Hansbrough, PF Shot Chart 15 MIN | 4-6 FG | 4-6 FT | 6 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 12 PTS | +8His most compact game in some time. Was relatively composed when the ball was dumped to him in the post, defended without fouling, and supplied good minutes in the absence of Johnson. Casey tends to prefer Patterson over him even if it comes at the expense of some rebounding, so Hansbrough has to look beyond his default skill level to get consistent minutes in the rotation. That lineup with him and Patterson was quite mobile and effective.

Chuck Hayes, PF Shot Chart 7 MIN | 0-1 FG | 0-0 FT | 0 REB | 0 AST | 2 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 0 PTS | -16Not a good matchup for him, he’s the guy you counter with when the opposing big is a beast, not a gazelle. My memory of him is passing up a path to a dunk for a flumper (floater and jumper combined, but really, neither).

Steve Novak, SF Shot Chart 12 MIN | 1-2 FG | 0-0 FT | 2 REB | 0 AST | 0 STL | 1 BLK | 0 TO | 3 PTS | -14Got a block in the first half! Not sure why he was in there in the fourth with the Raptors protecting a lead, I’ll chalk it up to an oversight.

John Salmons, SF Shot Chart 17 MIN | 0-3 FG | 4-4 FT | 1 REB | 2 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 0 TO | 4 PTS | -10Good first half where he supplied some ball-handling, spots of defense, but for some reason decided to take some bizarre shots in the second which went against, both, common sense and my desire to give him a high grade.

Greivis Vasquez, PG Shot Chart 13 MIN | 1-4 FG | 1-1 FT | 0 REB | 2 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 3 PTS | -12Made this one lazy pass which led to a steal and score which made me spit out my chewing tobacco. I don’t stand for that. Did not facilitate much and instead gave the ball up early in the shot-lock. A game that makes you go wonder if Buycks has something to offer.

Dwane Casey
Forget the weird sub of having Novak play with the Raptors in a lead, I’m a little disturbed that he wasn’t able to keep the team’s concentration up whenever they had a lead. Took him some time to realize that this isn’t Hayes’ matchup. Also didn’t see much of a zone considering the Pelicans don’t have great outside shooting. When the game got tight, there was too much reliance on DeRozan and not enough on the team. At the same time, got to give him some credit on the Patterson/Johnson switch, could’ve easily promoted Hansbrough instead.

Five Things We Saw

  1. The Raptors blew two big leads, one in the second and one in the fourth, and I it was all to do with them and not the Pelicans. A dip in concentration equals a drop in defense and next thing you know you got the Pelicans running breaks down your throat. Cut that out.
  2. This was one of those “first game back from the roadtrip” games and you might’ve thought the Raptors were going to come out slow, but instead they were quite conscientious of starting well. Patrick Patterson’s energy in the starting lineup definitely helped there.
  3. Luke Babbitt and Tyreke Evans caused us a lot of issued, they got past our perimeter defense way too easily way too many times, and this is without Ryan Anderson as a threat. This can’t happen against the Hawks because they won’t let us off the hook this easily.
  4. Kyle Lowry is the rock on this team. Even when DeRozan’s having big games, the steady undercurrent remains Lowry. Dare I say, he’s bringing a level of stability and consistency to the team that’s been missing for some time.
  5. We’ll take the win, but we need to be better against the Hawks. Let’s go Raps!

First! Patrick Patterson is a beast. Raps gotta extend him, he has great potential to be a dirk type player IMO.

    • consmap

      Like Kelly Olynyk?

      • Omar

haha nice. Patterson isn’t no where fluid as dirk but his defense is better so that’s good. I hope be resigns for 5 years 34 mill.

        • Abused Raptors Fan

MU isn’t going to use his only 5 year contract on 2Pat. Each team gets to have 1 designated player who will receive a 5 year contract. He’s great amd deserves to get paid, but a 5 year player he is not.

          • FREEJV

            2/16 million sounds good

    • KJ-B

Now we see why Amir was tryna play hurt, right?

    • StrikerAI

Don’t get carry away. He’s a solid bench player/starter, and that’s all he is.

    • CPT

Wouldn’t say dirk, but he is the type of player winning teams have – think Haslem, sheed later in his career, Kurt Thomas later in career. Reliable jump shooter with great range, has a knack at getting to soft spots around the key. Also tough as nails and very professional. All for extending him

      • Steverino

More like a Robert Horry-type player.

    • CF105

Patterson reminds me of David West before he started playing with Chris Paul. Smart defender, good positional rebounder, some good footwork and a jump shot. Also 8 mil/year? Way too much. 3 year 16-18 mil extension after next year sounds good to me.

derozan was selfish tonight and 00000 Defense. How many airballs did he have today?

    • shutup

none. he had none. he looked to pass the ball alot too stop giving him so much hate. he is a defensive liability and we all know and expect that.

      • FREEJV

someone didnt watch the game….. heat fan?

    • StrikerAI

I lost count of how many times Evans blew by him.

  • mmcd

    Chuck Hayes a -16 in 7 mins? F+.

    • FREEJV

why the hell did he choose hayes over hansbrough Casey is so dumb how is hayes gonna stop Davis with his trex arms smh

  • golden

Hayes & Vasquez almost singlehandedly lost the game tonight in that horrific 5 minute or so stretch in the 3Q. Gotta grade both of them an F.

    • Adriiian

Vasquez is my most hated Raptor right now.

  • golden

Hayes and Vasquez almost singlehandedly lost the game in that horrific 5 min or so stretch in the 3Q. Gotta grade an F to both of them.

    • why

along with Novak on the floor at the same time – not surpring big leads evaporated with a lineup with at least two subpar defenders and an offense non entity. The announcers try and frame this as “The Raps losing focus” when it seems to me it boils down to Casey putting out a unit that was unlikely to be anything other than terrible. Of course neither Jack nor Leo will ever criticize a Raptors coaching decision.

  • KJ-B

DeRozan is entitled to a bad game. Looked in desperate need of an All Star siesta/fiesta.

LeBron had 13 the other night. Y’all on here think it’s soooo easy to bring it against the Pelicans in a ‘trap game’!

Puhleez! Much prefer hero save his one good game b4 the break against ATL. Tyreke Evans, when u have that talent but lack discipline this is what u get: DNPCD to Hall of Famer from 1 night to the next: SMH!

    Gimme Deebo!

    • FREEJV

Ok now translate that in English for me…..

      • KJ-B

        “2013-2014 ALL STAR!!!!!”

that was determined last week everyone knows that…

          • crikee on a bicycle

Christ, some of you guys are such morons, how is it you’re all so opinionated on who should be fired, what the team should do and ‘rah-rah-we’re-going-to-the-playoffs-baby!’ ??

You’ve never read a boxscore before? Obviously not, or you’d know that DNPCD means Did Not Play Coaches Decision. And the game b4 the break against ATL is the next game, before the All Star break against Atlanta.

What happened to this site? Even the idiots who’d comment here before this stupid season knew wtf they were watching. And this is a stupid season. Morons.

        • Chewwy No Matthew

For a moment, get off of the Demar lovefest. Regardless of his all star status, I watched him take bad shot after bad shot tonight. I. as a lot of Raptor fans love Demar for the ton of great things he does and the skills he has but he is an AWFUL dribbler and for some reason he doesn’t seem to notice. He also still has a bad habit of sulking and quitting on the play when a call doesn’t go his way. This has to stop. This is what he does every game so please stop getting down people’s throats for giving him grief. The low grade was deserved tonight.

          • FREEJV

he thinks hes a superstar now cuz he was the 11th man selected for the team loool

        • Jerry Garcia

          help me out with it….

        • steverino

I get what DNPCD is. But what is SMH?

  • jacobdr4

Vaquez should never see the floor, id rather no offense with stone than no defense with vaquez. He is such a liability.

  • raptorstand

Looks like the refs got the memo. Tyler Hansborough deserved 25 minutes tonight and Chuck Hayes in there at anytime was a joke. Tyler slayed with 6 minutes left, great game.

    c+ for chuck hayes? …….

  • Reed

This is a game that Casey should get 100% of the blame. Everyone and their Grandmother knew Hayes wouldnt match up against the Pelicans bigs yet he went with him twice in the game. Not using Hansborough until forced too with Val’s 5 fouls again was foolish.(I know he used for 7-8mins prior to the sub) Again his decision to bring Novak instead of Hans left me shaking my head. Horrible coaching.

When Hayes and Novak were our bigs on the floor I expected the Pelicans to comeback and they did. This wasn’t a game where the bench was ineffective, its on Casey to realize the matchups. This is a recurring theme that was there when he refused to use Aaron Gray on bigs like Dwight Howard earlier this season.

Also using the two Point guard lineup against the likes of Rivers, Evans, Gordon was foolish yet he stupidly did it.

Finally Steve Novak is a Small Forward and Casey doesnt seem to understand it. When paired with Melo in NY it was fine cause Melo could play the 4.

Horrible coach and if he gets resigned you can forget about the Raps being anything more than a first round playoff team for the next 5+ years.

    • Tee

“This is a game that Casey should get 100% of the blame”

They won man; If you give him 100% of the blame for a win he’ll take that, I think.

    • Chewwy No Matthew

I don’t understand the Chuck Hayes lovefest. We have one possession in the third quarter so who does he sub in, Chuck Hayes. We are in a bad matchup down low so who does Casey keep out there too long, Chuck Hayes. We needed a basket down the stretch in Portland and who is on the floor, you guessed it, Chuck Hayes. If he doesn’t FINALLY come to his senses and replace Hayes with Hansborough, we may not hang on to win this game

    • FREEJV

Hey dont mess with Novak hes the new denial doctor hater

    • Ghotte

Guess you were someone who didn’t think the Raptor’s would have achieved jack-sh#t this season, eh? What was your opinion 20 games ago?

    • rapierraptor

I can’t blame Casey for the matador defensive effort that allowed Evans and LUKE BABBIT to get right to the cup time and time again during the 2nd half.

    • asifyouknow

Rivers is a bust out one of the reason he gets so many chances is because his name and his dad is Monty’s good buddy…Evans will be out of NO as soon as they can ships his ass out. There was a reason why Kings got rid of him………So that was not the it is in case you don’t know yet …Toronto needs some beef inside……Ross needs to become a back-up and DeMar needs to understand that just because he is an all-star does not make him Michael Jordan……

  • Reed

Also, adding to my post below:

Why isnt Val given more opportunities on the offensive end. Enes Freaking Kanter is averaging more PPG than Val.
I don’t blame Lowry because its on the coach to run plays for Val. All I see is plays for Derozan and TRoss.

Watching the Clips and Kings utilize their big man was a treat to watch. They specifically run plays for Blake and DMC all throughout the game not just the first quarter. The play starts with their big man unlike ours which usually after 15secs of dribbling by Derozan or Tross is given to Val in which he has to create something with 5secs left.

    FIRE Casey!!

    • Abused Raptors Fan

I wholeheartedly agree that JV needs more offensive touches. But its not all Casey’ s fault. The players don’t look for him as often as they should, maybe because they don’t trust him yet, idk. But Hans Solo had 6 FGA tonight in half the minutes as JV got 7, so obviously it’s not all on Casey.

  • Rupert

Derozan was off lowry was on we on we won derozan allowed a bad game after being a beast lately happy with a win!

  • resko

Idk why yu guys hate on vasquez and hayes we didnt let em comeback because they struggled. The ones to blame are casey for playing guys who are struggling and for derozan who is at the point in his career where he shud be taking over look at paul george a year younger and atleast 5 steps ahead

    • GoingBig

Don’t hate Hayes at all. There are places where he can body up against bigs and is solid(especially against slow bigs).
But it’s Casey’s job to recognize the mis-matches that Hayes is in and get him out.

    • ItsAboutFun

So when Paul George went 4/21 against LAL, 7/19 against Nets, and 5/23 against Portland over the past 12 days, that wasn’t really him, but someone else in disguise?

  • BandW

DeRozan trying his best at a Rudy Gay impression. Two straight airballs didn’t wake him up. I like his midrange jumper now and honestly, as a fan, I could live if he didn’t work on improving it anymore in exchange for improving his handle and his attack at the basket. Dare I say it, but Ross is already showing signs of a higher ceiling strictly in terms of attacking the rim and finishing.

  • jakdripr

I didn’t like what I saw from derozan tonight, but he gets a pass since he’s been carrying us for a while. Lowry on the other hand was superb yet again, I don’t want us to get back into the BC habit of overpaying players but this dude does so much for this team I feel we have to keep him. We would have lost this game were it not for him, clutch shots, clutch offensive rebounds, a clutch defensive stance on anthony davis at the end there. This dude is just clutch all around. I hope we can keep him for a good price, and if we do I hope he doesn’t pull a dampier on us and regress next season.

Ugly win, but a win’s a win, especially with a young team.

    • Will

hahaha, Some people might not remember him but I totally remember when Dampier had his career year and got paid.

  • ad

Raps dont come close to winning this game without lowry. Its a shame its dd and not him going to new orleans.

    • Will

It shouldn’t be about DeRozan. The real shame is Joe Johnson going over Lowry.

  • gizzly73

JV’s second season (third as a pro) is disappointing – hustler and a contributor in many ways but no future all star. I have been waiting for a breakout game or a stretch where he seems to dominate, but it is telling that Casey nor his team mates have no confidence to call his # consistently. He picks all the time, but rarely gets the ball in return which is confidence sapping. Note that his national team coach has severely limited his minutes in most outings. Don’t get me wrong; he is and will be a good rotation player but a top five so called franchise player is a stretch.
Can somebody please tell Casey to bench Hayes?

    • Abused Raptors Fan

You obviously aren’t familiar with big man development otherwise you’d know that most don’t begin playing great ball consistently until 3 or 4th year in the league and 22/23 years old. And as far as being dominant over a stretch of games, before tonight JV averaged almost 16/11 on 58% shooting over his last 8 games or so. For a 21 y/o, ill take it

      • gizzly73

You have a point However, Anthony Davis, D Cousins etc there is a long list of high drafted bigs with much better stats than JV. Andre Drummond # 9 pick comes to mind.

    • Tanks-a-lot

“Note that his national team coach has severely limited his minutes in most outings”
Senior players got the minutes for their final go at glory. JV was simply too new to the Lithuanian national team.

    • Mexiballer

Masai has ten more days to make a trade.

  • rtzyyz

Vasquez- this guy is beyond bad. At one point he took 2 threes in a row and clanged them both…then the ball ended up in his hands again after a second offensive board from good hustle of the rest of the team and he was about to shoot again. My entire section if not the entire arena were ready to kill this guy.
my 3 year old kid…Who knows as much about basketball as my dog…looked at me and asked why is that guy shooting? he’s a stinkey poopoo head.

I agree with my 3 year olds assessment.

    • Steverino

No, that never happened, rtzyyz. I mean your kid never said any such thing.

      • rtzyyz

Of course he didn’t. It’s a joke. Do people on this site have no idea what a hyperbole is?

  • steve fisher

DD could bring a blue chipper or top draft pick back to Raps. Although he is their top scorer he often takes twice as many shots as anyone on the team many of them long twos. He is not a good rebounder or defender. As a recently named all star trade him at his peak if and only if you can get a great return which our GM probably could pull off .A blockbuster trade would not surprise me and at least something significant like an upgrade big man who could back up at center would fill an obvious need. steve fisher GO RAPS GO !!!

    • CPT

Wouldn’t say DD has reached his peak yet, you are right that only if it brings back an upgrade (another all star), will it be okay to let derozan go. No part of this fan wants him traded though, he is supremely skilled for a 24 year old in the NBA

  • Captain_Dog

We need to start a Kyle Lowry for All NBA Defense bandwagon NOW, so that he doesn’t get screwed like how he did for the All-Star game.

  • Will

How does Hansbrough only get 15 minutes with Amir out? The guy produced every minute he was on the floor. How many fouls did he draw on them tonight? Every foul he draws for them sends the entire team to the bonus earlier. Casey must have something personal against him because it can’t be basketball related.

    • Reed

Casey has been horrible and has only looked good cause Lowry and Derozan have put the team on their backs. We could’ve used Hans for the 5 game road trip against bigs like DMC and Blake.
Whatever happens this season, Casey has to go.

  • bballi bballi paradise

remember when Eric Gordon was invited to the USA camp, wow

  • Roarque

I suspected during the game that Dwane was making substitutions at the request of Masai to showcase a few players. There is no other logical explanation for Steve Novak playing – the lyrics being crooned by Jack and Matt explaining to us how great it is to have a three point wizard like Novak on the payroll. Really? Really? With TRoss hitting threes early and Lowry hitting threes early we now need to put Novak on the floor in the 2nd Q? It had to be a showcase for the trade deadline. Did the same thing with Chuck Hayes and it also nearly backfired.
Having said that I’d be pleased to see Novak and Hayes head to Houston along with a 2015 1st rounder for Asik..
One other thing, Salmons having a hug-in with Tyreke in the middle of a game is sooo not cool. Save it for the handshake time after 48 minutes John. Until then Tyreke Evans is the fox who plans to steal your chickens from the henhouse – treat him accordingly.

    • GLF

This could be very true. Well I think I’m more hoping it’s true that it actually being true lol. It could just be that Novak has played well the last few games.

  • Roarque

Did I mention that Lowry had a nice game tonight? Did I mention Lowry won the game for us tonight?
BTW – Thank you Dwane for showing Amir the bench in civies. Heal the heel! Heal the heel!

  • Mexiballer

Why didn’t Hansborough play in the third quarter. Why did Vasquez play at all? Still beating the drum for a back up point guard that doesnt hurt this team on a regular basis.

  • Val Jasme

a win is a win. stop acting like you’re the one playing there guys. let’s just support them. i don’t know what words you’re going to tell them if raps lose the game..smh

  • Cameron Becker

Lol, rubbish. you nitpick Ross’s defense so much. Pretty much every article you do even though he’s usually the best defender out there. It was outstanding for 95 of the game..He destroyed Gordon.

  • tweed8

Was at the game last night and while it was fun and the crowd was having a good time, The Raptors just looked too relaxed or lazy at times. It was frustrating to watch them chuck away those leads.
Hansbrough is hilarious -in a good way- on the court. They need to stop calling him “Psycho T”, a more fitting name might be, “Rottweiler”. He didn’t care who was around him when he went for rebounds; He wanted that ball! If the day ever arrives where he bites into the ball and shakes it back and forth until it’s sad droopy mess, I won’t be surprised.
DeRozan, pass the rock! There were a couple times JV was just itching to ground a Pelican with a dunk.
