Amir Johnson is all business.

Milwaukee Bucks 100 FinalRecap | Box Score 110 Toronto Raptors
Amir Johnson, PF Shot Chart 28 MIN | 4-7 FG | 0-1 FT | 5 REB | 3 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 10 PTS | +20What more do you want from him? Second game back from injury, started the game gangbusters, and had to deal with the long, athletic, Bucks front-court, or Pachulia jamming elbows into his chest. A couple threes, a couple dimes…he’s the hero this city deserves (sorry Patman; we just like you, we don’t love you).

Terrence Ross, SF Shot Chart 33 MIN | 3-9 FG | 1-2 FT | 2 REB | 3 AST | 3 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 8 PTS | +18I’d be more concerned if the rest of his game disappeared alongside his offense, but he did a great job of rotating on defense, getting out in passing lanes and chasing his man around the screens. I’m concerned with his inability to consistently score heading into the playoffs.

Jonas Valanciunas, C Shot Chart 27 MIN | 4-7 FG | 6-6 FT | 13 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 14 PTS | +8This is not the Jonas we saw to start the season. This is not the Jonas I would have gladly flipped to Detroit for Drummond. This is the Jonas who came “this” close to losing it all with a stupid mistake, and has made a commitment to putting it behind him and doubling down. He was a beast tonight, and did a hell of a job against a quicker, more athletic frontcourt. I appreciate him swinging his elbows when he comes down with the ball.

Kyle Lowry, PG Shot Chart 36 MIN | 10-24 FG | 1-1 FT | 5 REB | 4 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 24 PTS | +15Sick handles, sick buckets, sick. You almost forgot about him from time-to-time with Vasquez handling the ball so much, but as an off-guard, he’s lethal because of his playmaking ability. Picked up in the 2nd half where Vasquez left off and made a lot of things happen. When the Raptors need something to happen on offense, there should be no doubt who the ball should go too.

Greivis Vasquez, PG Shot Chart 39 MIN | 8-12 FG | 4-5 FT | 2 REB | 7 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 2 TO | 25 PTS | +21There’s no question he belongs in this league; wish he didn’t think he needs to repeatedly defend that…it’s quite clear. That said, he made it rain in the 1st half, and makes a legit running mate for Lowry in the back-court. Pretty quiet in the second half, but Lowry picked up the slack like a good backcourt mate should. Sessions took a few too many liberties on offense, but you could see he tried to keep up; gotta appreciate that

Tyler Hansbrough, PF Shot Chart 20 MIN | 4-6 FG | 4-5 FT | 11 REB | 0 AST | 3 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 12 PTS | +6How did the Pacers not have a spot for him on their bench? Everytime there was a skirmish under the rim, or someone getting tangled up, he was there.

Patrick Patterson, PF Shot Chart 19 MIN | 1-7 FG | 0-0 FT | 5 REB | 1 AST | 2 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 3 PTS | -6He grabbed the few rebounds Hansbrough couldn’t scoop up. Had a hard time with Adrien/Henson, but he rarely has to deal with opposition A-squad for extended periods of time.

John Salmons, SF Shot Chart 16 MIN | 2-3 FG | 2-4 FT | 1 REB | 1 AST | 0 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 7 PTS | -4He actually jumped to pass the ball from the corner, and ended up throwing it away, that sent the Bucks out on the break and cut the Raptors lead to 6. That’s all I can think about. Nando should have slapped him for that transgression.

Nando de Colo, PG Shot Chart 17 MIN | 2-6 FG | 2-2 FT | 2 REB | 5 AST | 1 STL | 0 BLK | 1 TO | 7 PTS | -8Good with the ball, good off the ball, set a nice pace, but he’s not as good a shooter as you’d like. His ball movement and court-vision surprised the Bucks who couldn’t make any adjustments.

Dwane Casey
Did a great job of managing minutes, but not a good enough job of managing the game allowing the Bucks to make the 4th quarter run that forced him to play the starters down the stretch more than we all would have liked.

48 Wins!! Man I LOVE this team!! Can’t wait to see them in the playoffs

  • RobertArchibald

SportsCentre showed Raps highlights and post-game interviews before Shanahan/Leafs coverage. This might be bigger than the franchise best 48th win.

    • SickNTired

Haha. I saw that too! Finally some respect
      Congrats boys!!!!

    • FREEJV

sportsnet is the channel that hates the raptors not tsn

    • uke2themax

They also didn’t talk about the Raps AT ALL until 6:41 in the 6 o’clock version of SC. Apparently talking about the Leafs clearing out their dressing room is more interesting..

    • Lonny Baxter

yoo robert remember when we were the banger brothers good times man good times

      • RobertArchibald

If they’re going to give me 6 fouls, I’m not leaving the court until I’ve used them all.

  • Junior Qamar

48! Were getting third heat are getting 2nd

    • hotfuzz

Bulls are winning, so hold your horses.

  • Quest

i actually want us to lose the next game and the bulls to win. i am ecstatic that we r getting 48 wins, but if we want to go as deep as possible in the playoffs, we NEED to avoid the heat. we can’t compete with Lebron and the Refs. so our best chance is to get the 4th seed and take on the pacers in the second round since they have clinched the first seed.
    Go Raps

    • GetLicks

How about worrying about the FIRST playoffs series? Can’t believe how many ppl are looking ahead to the 2nd round when the top 2 seeds aren’t even decided yet. We need to win and finish 3rd, head to the playoffs strong

      • GetLicks

Nvm, Miami clinched. But yeah, I’d much rather win a round than lose to the nets again cause of all their experience and respect from the refs.

    • Kevin

That makes no sense. Your argument here is that you want to “go as deep as possible into the playoffs, so we have to avoid the Heat”. Do you do realize that in order to face the Heat in the second round, WE ACTUALLY HAVE TO WIN THE FIRST ROUND. I don’t think you understand that and yet you want to go as deep into the playoffs as possible. Washington is a much easier team to win against in the playoffs than the Nets. If we don’t win the first round, we don’t even get to see Miami or Indiana.

    • Feather Ruffler

      Cart. Before. Horse.

      • afrocarter

    • Moe

The refs will favor Indiana over us. Stop acting like the heat are the only team that get calls. Against the heat, we will lose but ross/jv will shine

      • Kkb

Man – up ! Face yr fears (Heat, Pacers) and conquer them in order to mature and grow! Our goal shld be be the ring so sooner or later we r gonna have to get past these guys .

      • Steverino

I’d hate to see a Raps-Nets series precisely because they have “stars” and we know how NBA refs love stars.

  • Feather Ruffler

That Atlantic Division banner looked pretty darn sweet up in those rafters.

This JV kid is something special. Who drafted him?

    • Feather Ruffler

He’ll have a better career than Drummond in the end.

      • FREEJV

        never doubted that.

        • Feather Ruffler

Do you think JV peaking at just the right time is due to his restricted minutes earlier in the season? Could Casey be a secret genius?

          • FREEJV

no i think its due to DUI

            • Jerry Garcia

right…nothing like a DUI to set things right …JV …handle this as a lesson and we will all be ok

  • rapierraptor

    Thank you, Vivek Ranadive!

  • Rz

    48! Great job Greivis!

    • Rz

And obviously the rest of the team! JV played amazing.

  • caccia

I really like the smoothness on offence tonight. There was one play with five passes leading to a Hansbrough shot right under the basket, where he was fouled. I saw signs of the fast break that had gone to Key West for winter, even though it’s less effective than the half-court offence. On defence, I think Toronto will turn up the heat, but their inexperience will lead to more difficulties in the first round than we would like. If they face Washington, another inexperienced squad, that would make life much easier, and give them a chance to get their sea legs, so to speak.

  • rapierraptor

I kind of want to go back and listen to that podcast with the dude from Cowbell Kingdom again where he basically told us that we were going to hate all of the new guys acquired in the trade.

    • Junior Qamar

They gave us an entire bench. Besides who would have thought those players would mesh with the raptors so well. Masai Ujiri for Executive of the year!

      • Junior Qamar

Ive never actually heard of 2pat b4 the trade and never watched chuck hayes play either. They were the steals of the trade.

        • rapierraptor

Yeah, would have been hard to predict that 2Pat would suddenly turn into the player scouts were hoping he’d become out of Kentucky.

        • tonious35

2Pat was a dark horse and everyone loved him in Houston! When the Rudy trade was announced, I called it out to my bro that 2Pat was the key player that was going to let the Raps Trump the trade.

          • 2damkule

            congratulations on almost being right!

      • asifyouknow

Masai Ujiri for Executive of the year! Yep the guy is a superstar and screwed the Knicks with Melo… the guy…

    • Your comment was really interesting, so I went and listened to that podcast (Dec 9), and it does make for good listening in retrospect. As it turns out the Cowbell Kingdom guy was not too far off in predicting how we’d feel about the 4 players (but his optimism about Rudy Gay was misplaced, ha)

On John Salmons: “he is what he is, an aging player, there won’t be a sendoff at the airport”
On GV: a fine passer and scorer, slow on D, “you’ll be sucked in by his allure & charisma, he talks a great game”
On Patrick Patterson [here the Cowbell Kingdom guy was most ambivalent compared to what we wound up seeing this season]: inconsistent — perhaps not used right in Sacramento, chemistry with Cousins never developed
On Chuck Hayes: (not much commentary) “a good guy, locker room good vibes”

      “You’re getting 4 good people.”

Also some commentary about restricted free agent status of GV & PP.

      • Dagger

I actually think that the biggest value of the trade was not the four guys received from the Kings, but the increased touches for Lowry, Derozan, Jonas, and Amir Johnson. It also didn’t hurt that Lowry took ownership of the team after Gay left.

      • asifyouknow

Well we all know about the Kings don’t we? another genius move by Ugiri..he loves to dump on teams…

      • rapierraptor

Interesting! Fair enough, thanks for doing this. I definitely remembered his commentary as being more negative and damning than it actually was.

        • That actually had been my impression as well — I was mildly surprised on re-listening to the podcast. I think it was more that the Kings guy was guardedly optimistic about Gay coming in, whereas we all of course were happy to see him go, so that may have colored our opinion of whatever he was saying about what we were getting.

          • rapierraptor

Yes, that and I distinctly remember there being a somewhat awkward back-and-forth between the Cowbell guy and Zarar that probably affected how I remember what the dude actually said.

  • soup

not really important but did anyone else notice that they got rid of the purple inaugural season banner? just curious as to why.

    • Will

Because it was lame. It’s like a participation ribbon from school. Everyone had an inaugural season. It’s not an accomplishment.

    • FREEJV

we replaced it with a division banner. need at least2 banners up there so we dont look like losers

      • Rapchat

      • 2damkule

if they don’t want to look like losers, then they shouldn’t have banners for winning a division; want a banner for winning the conf? go for it. champ. banner? obviously. anything other than those two, GTFO.

  • Madmax

I don’t care who we play. Let them worry about us! This team is legit. Name me another team that can play three guards like DD, Kaylo and grief giving Grievous.

    • Steverino

Exactly. The team is multi-faceted and deep. I love the various styles on the team. They’re tough to defence.

  • asifyouknow

Post game show experts say that Toronto has to win games in the eighties to have a shot in playoffs.

WOW! and they get paid to gives us that great analysis. Lol. Those guys on NBA TV Canada are Einstein’s for sure.

Hell yea! You gone win if you keep a team in the eighties, but reality is that it won’t happen in this playoffs.

If Casey doesn’t open up the offensive weapons he has available to him, you might as well forget about a 7 game series cause you gone home in 4.

The biggest enemy you may have going into the playoffs is a winning coach.

I know that makes no sense to you but I just think Casey is creature of habit,he will keep beating his head against the wall until it cracks or he passes out.

All I’m saying is that if in some games that defense stuff is not working for you SHOOT THE HELL OUT OF THE BALL.

Good luck Toronto and congrats…….. awesome.

One more thing: Isn’t it nice having two starting PG.

    • Saskatoon Raps Fan

Seems to me the raps have been scoring a lot lately. I’m not worried about the offense

      • Chewwy No Matthew

Agreed. The defence has looked terrible lately. If we end up playing the Wizards, we get to guard the fastest guy in the league in John Wall.

    • Ghotte

If not for that creature of habit the team wouldn’t have achieved what they have. That mindset they established slowly but surely began paying dividends in Jan/Feb

  • Bob the Truthteller

Lol. DeRozan against the Knicks 26 points on 18 shots. “He needs to get 26 points on less shots.” Lowry 24 points on 24 shots. “He is Jesus among us.” I love Lowry as much as the next guy, but I really dislike the hate DeRozan receives. Why not judge everyone fairly?

    • Matty R

I agree. It’s pretty clear that Vazquez deserves to be atleast on the same grading as Lowry this game. Lowry may have closed the game out well, but he also had his defensive assignment blow by him a number of times and took some ill advised shots. Vazquez played the same level of defence, but was way more efficient on offence, not to mention he had 2 or 3 highlight worthy dimes. I love Lowry as much as any other Raptor fan, but just because Vazquez is trying to prove he’s a worthy starter in this league doesn’t man you should hate him for that. Don’t forget Lowry had the same problem while he was with Memphis and Houston.

      • Geoff Gragson

I’m not sure why you guys expect total consistency from the clowns that run this site. They don’t know any more than you or I. 10% of the time their post-game columns are actual, intentional jokes. So come to the site, read what they have to say, and hold them to the same standard you hold your senile uncle who ate paint chips as a child. And, if all else fails, take pot shots at idiots in the comments section.

        • Will

Why are you even here if it’s so bad?

          • Bob the Truthteller

I come here because I love everything about the Raptors, I love this team. I also think that these guys do probably know more than me about basketball, analyzing it anyway. I respect their opinions, I think Blake works for theScore, so he is a professional. I love the time these guys put in, but also, sometimes irrationally I feel the need to defend DeRozan because this Fanbase turns on him when that isn’t what he deserves. I also think it’s alright for me to question favouritism when it’s blatant. Regardless, I love RR, and the work these guys put in, they give me good articles to read during boring college lectures.

            • DDayLewis

So you love us, the work that we put in, and we write good articles, but we’re clowns and idiots. Thanks for showing love, homie.

              • Steverino

You’re getting your commenters mixed up.

                • DDayLewis

That I did. Disqus has weird glitches.

            • dunkmycat7

I have only been on this site for a short time but I’m freaking at how CRAZY everyone gets when one of the boys doesn’t play a PERFECT GAME or they actually LOSE (gasp!).
They want to kill DD, kill KL, fire the coach…WHOA !!!
If I had told you all at the beginning of the year that the Raps would win 48, go to the playoffs, win the Atlantic, 3rd overall you would have RIPPED me, asked me about my meds and offered to take all my money. And if I had said the same thing the DAY AFTER they traded Rudy when we all thought it was gonna be TANK REPUBLIC you would have said the same.
And as far as DC is concerned…i have been one of his vocal critics and I thought after the start this year that it was only a matter of time until Masai called his buddy GC. But you have to give the guy credit, he took this team got them to buy in and play the right way and no matter what anyone thinks here HE DESREVES AND WILL GET AN EXTENSION. That’s just how it’s done in Pro Sports.
This has been the most surprising, most amazing season in Raps HISTORY..
And Remember -anytime in the last 4 years we were all home and cooled out by game 65 with no hope for the playoffs…So enjoy it.
              Go you basketball team -GO!!!

    • Lucas

@Bob the Truthteller: Way to cherry-pick stats. Derozan took 28 possessions to get 26 points (18 FG, 6 trips to the freethrow line, and 4 turnovers). Lowry took 25 possessions to get to 24 points.

Neither were efficient, but your statement made DD sound highly efficient, because you’re just conveniently leaving off vital information.

Plus, it is a matter of: A) When/how those points are scored; and B) How they’ve played throughout the year. DD is averaging 22.8 PPG on 24.2 possessions. That’s not really efficient. Lowry is averaging 17.9 PPG on 18.1 possessions. Not that efficient either, but more efficient than DD.

Don’t get me wrong: as someone who has been critical of DD in the past, I think he’s made a MASSIVE leap this year, and going through the playoffs will do wonders for him as well (IMO). He’ll be underpaid in a year or two, max. But his inefficiency is still his weak point, so let’s not cherry-pick stats to make him sound efficient when it’s not the case.

  • steve fisher

It was not coach Casey`s fault that he had to put the starters back in. All they had to do was use the clock which they do not do well, challenge all shots with hands straight up and DO NOT take careless/stupid fouls. They were up 14 with about 5 on the clock and KL comes of a curl and scores which did not count because PP sets a totally unnecessary moving screen. What was he thinking? Shortly after JS in the corner attempts the most dangerous pas back to the point while he is JUMPING IN THE AIR??? the result was a quick basket and a totally pumped Bucks team that had been on cruise control. Some of the Raps just do not seem to get it or lack the DISIPLINE to realize that against elite playoff teams these careless mistake will kill them. Although TR has shown flashes of brilliance an automatic starting position not be guaranteed! IF he took it to the hoop every third or fourth possession he would score twice as many points put the other team into earlier foul trouble and with his speed hops and athleticism!! Defensively he regularly seems to loose track of his check nad when he gets the ball because he is open TR runs at and by him where he calmly gets set and takes a n OPEN shot sometimes being fouled by TR as ha madly tries to recover! This happens 2 to 3 times a game.He should spend more time on the bench to discuss and think about these recuring lapses!!! GO RAPS GO and congrats on a gutsy TEAM EFFORT! Steve Fisher

  • James Slim

Loath’s grade is way too high. Maybe a b. I’m a huge lowry fan but thought he was ordinary today, other than 4th qtr

  • GetLicks

The basketball Gods have been kind this year. Raptors have a chance to finish 3rd in the conference, franchise record in wins and LA & Boston finished 25th & 26th..minimizing the chances of 2 of my most disliked teams grabbing Wiggins.

  • DandB

You ask why the Pacers didn’t have a spot for Hansborough on the bench. I ask… why do we ever play Hayes before him?

    • Will

Because Hansbrough doesn’t have the girth to guard some of the bigger guys in the league.

    • RaptorsInThisB&$#h

Beacuse God blessed Hayes in the thighs department…

  • Guest

Lowry’s my favourite raptor, but thought he was worth a b or maybe e for today, not his best showing.

  • James Slim

Lowry’s my favourite Raptor, but thought a B/C would have done him today, not his best showing

  • Caccia

No one has pointed out that we are dominating teams both good and bad, even without starters like DeRozan, Johnson, and Lowry. This team has real depth, and I think Coach Casey will draw on it to endure a long, intense playoff series.

  • ad

    Well done raps.

  • jakdripr

I agree with your assessment of Ross, I guess all sophomores are due for a little slump, here’s hoping he can get it together before the playoffs. But yea, least he’s doing other things and keeping himself relevant. I didn’t even realize how bad of a game he had stats wise until I looked at the box score because he felt like he was having a good game.

  • RaptorsInThisB*$*h

TIME TO UNLEASE BUYCKS!!! In a seriousness I really want to see the man play. Useless game against the knicks (Might actually be a must lose!…F**kin Lebron)
