  • Colangelo: Adding another pick "not looking very likely"

“It’s not looking very likely. Everyone is talking about what a weak draft it is and now everyone is in love with their pick. It’s a scenario where you look at the value of the pick. Can we get No. 10? Can we get No. 14? Whatever it is, what’s it worth giving up to get that? Are we going to get a player that’s better than what we have? You might also talk about swapping future firsts with some protection on it. I’m open to that. Of course I have inquired about some picks and they’ve said sure, if you give us an unprotected pick in the future, then we’ll do it.”

This is not the draft the Raptors should be swapping a future 1st rounder for an unprotected pick.

    Agreed.
    Walking like I'm already there.

Correction, I meant to say: "This is not the draft the Raptors should be swapping a" [delete] "1st rounder for" a FUTURE "unprotected pick."

Everyone lies on draft day! Its all part of the game.
I am expecting packaging of players/draft picks.

Lots of teams want to move out players / clear cap space / and address weakness

Considering he traded away a late 1st rounder for a player who was sitting on the bench in Chicago I would tend to believe him when he says he's not impressed with the back end of the first round.

I really think that unless he can basically buy a pick at low cost, we're only likely to see a deal that involves some bigger contracts too. Most of the teams looking to trade up seem to be trying to dump contracts: Parker/Jefferson with the Spurs, Jackson on the Bobcats. I think BC won't force the issue too much, and will be happy to come away with one asset if he thinks it'll actually help the team. With this one more than with most others, the draft is a crapshoot.

Unless he's just saying that to continue to justify the trade in the first place (covering his ass).
Not saying that's what I think, but there's always 2 ways of looking at something, and Bry Co is the spin master.

I don't think that's the case at all. JJ came in and made a pretty good impact for a guy who had been rotting on the bench for so long. He is far better than most guys taken at the end of the 1st round. JJ's production validated the trade.

If he wanted to get another pick, he should've done it earlier. Closer you get to draft day, the more inflated some of the player values become, the harder it becomes to acquire picks.

It's easy for middle-of-the-road players to be productive, or put up good numbers, on a horrible team. There's a reason (or 2) that he was rotting on the bench in CHI.

If Knight slips to #5, then I would like to see BC acquire another pick to get Biyombo ... if Knight isn't there, take Biyombo.
-Game changers are not there ... is Kawhi better than JJ? ... Is Kemba better than Bayless? ... Will Jonas come over?

I also wonder if Knight is better than Bayless. Scouts seem to believe he is, but they also thought Bayless was going to be a better pro than he has ended up.

As for Jonas, I don't think there's any question of whether he'll come over. He desperately wants to. It's just he couldn't negotiate a buyout with his current team to allow him to do it next year. Personally, if Kanter's gone, he's my second choice.

                          Duncan...

They had Deng and Gibson and wanted to shed some salary, plus, JJ was seen as t/o prone, and they were contending for a championship not developing young players. There are always reasons, but that doesn't mean they are good reasons for us not to make the trade. Chicago traded a 16th pick in a good draft year (johnson was picked AHEAD of Jrue Holiday, Jeff Teague, Darren Collison, and Omri Casspi) for a 28th pick in what has been called the worst draft in at least 5 years. Chicago lost value on that trade. If we trade Johnson for a draft pick that is higher than 28th, we have gained value. I'm not sure how you can put any negative spin on the Johnson trade. Raps bought low, and low risk, and their product gained value. The fact that it is easy for middle of the road players to put up numbers on a horrible team only makes the trade THAT MUCH MORE of a no brainer. JJ is not the answer at SF but will probably be a descent back up OR a guy we can ship to another horrible team. IF/WHEN we do trade JJ it'll be for much more than the 28th draft pick in the worst draft in 5 years. Coangelo 1, you ZERO

Yeah the reason was that the Bulls are loaded with talent. He never got a fair shot. His coach even said so. His teammates said so. When I say JJ was productive I wasn't talking about the stats. I was referring to what I saw with my own two eyes. Yeah, players can sometimes pad stats on a bad team but the guy played well. I'm not looking at a stats sheet right now.
