  • Raptors Targeting a Free Agent Centre? Chisholm's 2 cents post #71

During the presser last night, Dwane Casey hinted that the Raptors might be targeting a potential centre during free agency this summer. I didn't hear the press conference myself and the liklihood of names mentioned were probably slim, but outside of Tyson Chandler which other centres are available this summer and who do you think we might be pursuing?

So they took the kid last night as the best player they saw.
Understand he could be a year or 2 away from coming here. And then a few years to acclimate.
So we still need a Centre and they're working on that.

I'm pretty damn pleased about this plan.
“I have no idea who Chukwudiebere Maduabum is, but on his Draft Express profile, he’s listed as Chu Chu. I think he’s worthy of picking just for that. He immediately is in the running for best All-Time NBA name.” -Tim W.

If someone could waive a magic want and Turn Bargs into Hibbert or DeAndre Jordan or Marc Gasol maybe I could stop convulsing.

Jordon would be perfect because in a year or 2 he could come off the bench. High quality reserve right there.

Problem now is that every free agent knows we drafted a player that we intend to be our starter in 2-3 years, and most guys will be looking for long term deals, hence Toronto not as attractive as other options if they are starting caliber centers or think they deserve to be one. Guys will be attracted if they have 2-3 years left in their career, or a guy who hasn't had an opportunity to play a lot of minutes and want to use the Raptors as a springboard.

Funny you mentioned Chandler because when it was hinted that Casey was one of the coaches being interviewed, I asked if Chandler would be easier to get if Casey was the coach. Here's hoping so. Good one man. Peace

That plunger video is annoying as hell.

In this situation, I have no problem whatsoever of going after Tyson Chandler hard.

He is a starting C next year,

JV plays behind him for a year or two when he finally gets here (if that is not next year),

                Tyson starts breaking down/losing abilities,

JV takes over and Chandler becomes the back up all the while being good trade bait if JV develops faster than anyone imagined.

Alabi is also there as a project for the next 2 seasons to eventually become the backup for JV.

This might be a genius play by BC if he can steal another player from Mark Cuban.

                  chances could be good

I'd like to think that the Raps have a good chance of landing a center, just based on the conditions of the league, as well as the current make up of the team.

Chandler - big stretch for a kid to leave the World Champions, but the Dwane Casey link is there. I'm shocked if he leaves Dallas, but stranger things have happened.
Marc Gasol - Jose could be a good lure. He's spent almost his whole life in Memphis, which must be getting old by now. Plus Z-bo has stolen his spotlight.

Regarding Deandre Jordan and others (as well as the above mentioend) - there are going to be a lot of guys looking for the most money they can squeeze out of a new collective bargaining agreement. With the Raps having flexibility, I'm sure some of these up and coming centers will be thinking dollars, playing time, and a starting position which the Raps can offer. Financial flexibility might be huge, as few teams have the money. Lets see what BC can pull out of his hat. I'd love to see Marc Gasol playing beside Ed Davis. Gasol provides the defense and blocked shots too.

Out of those 3 Chandler is the only unrestricted free agent. Jordan and Gasol's teams will most certainly match any offers they get.

This is somewhat unrelated, but not sure it needs it's own thread. Not sure it'll be easy getting a starting C in free agency. Frankly, getting a starting C means one of Bargs, Amir or Ed has to go, mostly because there's no point in having 4 bigs that need minutes. With that in mind, it is possible if no home run target is available (Chandler, Jordan) that we're stuck with free agent consolation prizes. So, what are your free agent consolation prizes? Guys you'd like to see on our team whether or not we can pull off bigger deals?

I wouldn't mind trying to drag Kurt Thomas over. Maybe Anthony Parker will want to come back here for a year. Grant Hill's another one. Maybe Jeff Foster too.

I think that more than likely they're not going to be able to land any big name free agent center and I'm not sure they would want to given they have their center of the future tucked is away now. They're probably going to want to spend most of their money on a wing upgrade. That said, here is a list of names who might fit what Dwayne Casey is going to be running and who will be more of the bargain bin material:
                        • Joel Przybilla
                        • Jeff Foster
                        • Jason Smith
                        • Jared Jeffries

Joel would no doubt cost the most out of that group because he's the best but I feel his big pay days are over. Jeff Foster is the most solid out of the lot. He's not going to do anything exciting for you, just grab some boards and stick to his man. Jason Smith is tall, young and athletic. He still has room to grow and may be the diamond in the rough type player Colangelo is famous for finding. Jeffries is kind of a tweener but I like his game. He works hard for his coaches and plays he role typically really well.

I'd add Kurt Thomas to that list, except that I kinda like that guy and don't want to see him suffer for the last few years of his career.

Wow what a turnaround for you Matt, I remember a lashing or two from you when I made similar thoughts on Chandler. Welcome aboard brother!

I agree one (Bargs) would have to go (Bargs), and I (Bargs) hope it is (Bargs!!!), but the fact that Casey has neglected to mention Ed Davis in many comments about the team (except when asked directly about him) concerns me that Ed may be the one (Bargs).

Good god no. At least the ACC is wheelchair accessible! Ok Parker is less of a stretch, but the other 3? You were being sarcastic I hope.
