It's fucking hilarious that a team with 4 future Hall Of Famers can barely make the playoffs. I blame the coach.

2-They will not amnesty Kobe because he wont be able to resign with the lakers for 3 years Making him retire somewhere else if he ever wants to play again. After what he's done for them they wont force him into retirement like that.
If we look from business side, Kobe must be waived. There is no question. Would you have player in your roster who will play max couples months in that season? Or maybe not even a month. + Plus you would save over $80M in penalties and taxes if you amnesty him.
But if we look from fans side, from respect side, then I doubt Lakers will waive him. But in my opinion Kobe's waiving should be in consideration talks.
Kobe either way will get his $30M++ next year.
EDIT: But wow, there are plenty of talks about Kobe while MRI results aren't on the hand yet.. wow.Last edited by rocwell; Sat Apr 13, 2013, 03:05 PM.

-Kobe has claimed next year would be his last anyways, which ofcourse may or may not be true.
- I wasn't able to get the Larry Coon FAQs site to load but I'm pretty confident a team can't resign an amnestied player for the duration of their contract. If true that means the Lakers could resign him the year after. (someone correct me if this is wrong)
- I'm not positive when the repeater tax rule starts (if its since the most recent CBA or if it accounts to before) the Lakers would save somewhere between (rough estimates) 60 and 100 mil dollars of tax on Kobe's salary.
Assuming he is out for next season, I'd be shocked if they didn't amnesty him, and I'd be just as shocked if Laker fans did more than bat an eye at it. They all know his career is and was winding down anyways.
Why would even the biggest Kobe fan care if the Lakers amnesty kobe given - he wasn't going to play anyways, he would get paid, and the team could resign him?

IF the Lakers were allowed to sign him after next season when his current contract is up, and they were reasonably sure that Kobe wasn't go to play at all next season, then I don't why they couldn't come to an agreement and amnesty him. If I'm Kobe, I probably tell them it's a good idea. He still get paid, and the org saves a lot of money, making it easier for them to win 1 more title when he returns (if he decides to not retire). From my understanding, the only disadvantage is that LA would no longer have his bird rights, but considering he's coming off a crazy salary, a crazy injury, and is in the twilight of his career I think it's safe to assume that he's not getting MAX money anymore, which means that he's not losing that much. Also the Lakers can compensate Kobe by doing a contract for multiple years, and front loading the contract. That way he makes money even if he retires.
I never would have thought that It'd be possible, but amnestying bryant makes a lot of sense, and because KOBE is the face of the lakers, I can't see their being a lot of backlash. The only way the amnesty him, is if they explain the situation, make it clear that they are going to sign him back in the off season, that he is still a Laker in spirit, and that this is just a nifty way to save 80 million dollars.
As long as Kobe is on board with it, because there's no way they do it unless he's on board, I think it's actually a real possibility, although, I'd say the odds are 4 to 1 that they DON'T amnesty him."They're going to have to rename the whole conference after us: Toronto Raptors 2014-2015 Northern Conference Champions" ~ ezzbee Dec. 2014

It could involve Raptors for the next season for sure. Lakers will look some changes for the next season.

I think cause and effect are hard to determine. There's a few specialists quoted over on the rumours page at hoopshype who are of the opinion that it was not related to the amount of minutes he logged.
I don't think it's fair to blame d'antoni. This isn't Any Given Sunday. Kobe wanted to be on that court, and kobe wanted to get into the playoffs. I was hoping for the lakers to miss the playoffs, but now I kind of want them to make it and give either the spurs or okc a run for their money. Still want them to lose in the first round though."They're going to have to rename the whole conference after us: Toronto Raptors 2014-2015 Northern Conference Champions" ~ ezzbee Dec. 2014

It's really difficult to say whether this will be his last game or not. He was thinking about retiring after next season. Also, if he knows he's going to be out a full season, then he has to work his ass off to rehab, only to play one more season? He's also stated he doesn't want to play unless he can play at elite level. It seems like he'll be 80%-90% of his old self, but not 100%. How long the rehab takes, and how much explosiveness he gets back will probably be the determining factors. That, and whether or not he thinks the lakers have a shot at another championship."They're going to have to rename the whole conference after us: Toronto Raptors 2014-2015 Northern Conference Champions" ~ ezzbee Dec. 2014

He was thinking about retiring. But he was also musing about playing until he was 40.
Apparently the time-table set on his recovery is 6-9 months, which could place him right at the beginning of the season. People are blowing this waay out of proportion. Its Kobe. Of course he's going to come back from this.

Anyway, I think the 6-9 months timeframe from the doctor pretty-much puts a fork in the amnesty talk, unless the timeframe changes significantly between now and July.

So the only way they'd be able to resign him is by getting him to sign as a free agent using one of their exceptions (max $5 million, but more likely $3 million), get far enough under the cap that they can sign him outright (possible, if they do a complete blow-up and don't resign Howard or any other big ticket UFAs), or get far enough under the tax apron that they can swing a sign-and-trade with whatever team owns his rights.
