Default What do Jerusalem, Amar'e and Canada Basketball have in Common?

JERUSALEM (AP) -- The president of Israel has invited New York Knicks star Amare Stoudemire to play for the country's national basketball team because of his ties to Judaism.

Shimon Peres met with Stoudemire on Thursday to discuss the player's charity efforts. Stoudemire, who says he has ``Hebrew roots,'' has traveled to Israel before and Peres urged him to help the national team.
The six-time NBA All-Star already has significant ties to Israeli basketball. Last month, he joined a group looking to buy Hapoel Jerusalem, a team in Israel's top league. Stoudemire is in Israel to coach the Canadian basketball team at the Maccabiah Games, a competition for Jewish athletes.

I don't understand this at all. Is there a special elite sub-squad of Canada Basketball made up of jewish-canadian basketball players that we are currently unaware of? Or do we just have have a certain quota of Jewish people on the team? Or is it like with the Nazis, where as long as you have one Jewish grandparent you get invited to the camp, errrrr tournament? Which would be awesome (playing basketball not being genocided, in case that wasn't clear) because I've got a Jewish grandma!

This could be my ticket to playing for CANADA! Where do I sign up? Where are the tryouts! Do I have to learn hebrew? 'Cus I'll do it! Do I have to be pro-Israel? Nope! I'll just pretend to be, then use my MVP acceptance speech to denounce violence in the region, and facilitate reconciliation and/or a two state system! I mean, now that I've come across this article, anything is possible!!!

The Maccabiah Games are strictly for Jewish people, and held every 4 years in Israel.
You can't compete unless you have Jewish roots.

So Canada's team would be made up of Jewish Canadians.

Pretty sure we won Hockey at the Maccabiah Games one year ... surprise surprise..? Lol

Not at all. Coaches can be from anywhere.
Its only the players participating that need to be of Nationality.

Like Vykis pointed out, the Lithuanian Coach is used throughout the world.

And for this particluar team, I'm not sure its actually associated with Canada Basketball, so I'm not sure there is even anything really governing this team.

For the longest time Canada's basketball team coach was a Jack Donoghue a New Yorker (much respected).

Here is a link that pretty much explains Canadian participation in these games:
    http://www.maccabicanada.com/maccabi...ls=1011&id=175

"Children of intermarried parents may have last names that don’t sound Jewish, but a player only needs one Jewish parent to qualify to play at the Maccabi games, he said."
