  • NBA standings since 95-96

I made an NBA standings since 95-96 season in order to see how have we done since we joined the NBA. This table excluded Charlotte which joined the NBA later on. Here are the results:

    29. Memphis 547 wins.
    28. Clippers 554.
    27. Golden State 557.
    26. Washington 578.
    25. Toronto 581.
    24. Brooklyn 627.
    23. Minnesota 636.
    22. Milwaukee 648.
    21. Philadelphia 662.
    20. Atlanta 666.
    19. Cleveland 679.
    18. Sacramento 682.
    17. Denver 683.
    16. New York 683.
    15. Boston 719.
    14. New Orleans 730.
    13. Chicago 731.
    12. Portland 757.
    11. Orlando 761.
    10. Detroit 774.
    9. Houston 781
    8. Indiana 782.
    7. Oklahoma 791.
    6. Phoenix 807.
    5. Dallas 826.
    4. Miami 826.
    3. Utah 850.
    2. Lakers 931.
    1. San Antonio 967.

Interesting. All the teams with less wins are either very good or at least decent (Wizards). So if the Raptors choose to tank, they could become the biggest loser on that list next year.

How about while they were in Vancouver?
Over the course of 6 season they wan total of 101 games.
Next worst team was the Clippers with 137.

What is interesting is that there is a huge gap between bottom 5 and the rest. And with Nets being 6th worst team, that gap will only get bigger. We are just 34 wins above last place Grizzlies. With all teams behind us being in win now more, if we go into another rebuilding process, we can go bottom of the table.

What I am proud with is the fact that we never finished last in the standings. Were never close to even do so.

You are famous Marx. Your article was linked to another site I frequent where they describe the top 10 teams as teams that are consistent contenders, often well managed and often don't tank. Whereas the teams in the bottom 10 are the teams that more commonly tank.

I am more famous for my work in Economy, mostly Capital and Communist Manifesto, but its nice to be famous in the Raptors community as well.

This is why Chris Paul is getting paid a max salary.

Its not just Paul. They have been consistently good in Charlotte. That first season they were led by Glen Rice and Larry Johnson, both averaging over 20 points. Not counting the last two seasons, they have only had two seasons under 37 wins.

                      29. Memphis 547 wins.
                      28. Clippers 554.
                      27. Golden State 557.
                      26. Washington 578.
                      25. Toronto 581.
If we tanked it's very likely we'd move into last.

Say Clippers and Grizz repeat their win totals with 56 and Warriors win 50. Wizards go .500 and we win 20 games.

                      29. Toronto 601.
                      28. Memphis 603.
                      27. Golden State 607.
                      26. Clippers 610.
                      25. Washington 619.

So we'd be the worst NBA franchise since our inception

It depends what you mean by tanking. From what I understand, we want to rebuild, but even so, we can not move our existing contracts, so we will have a very decent team. There is no way we win under 30 games. And that will take us well over 610.

Washington can overtake us. They are only 3 Wins back and have a good team.
Clippers are a contenders and can come close, but not to close.
Golden State and Memphis have no chance.

If we add the projected number of wins for next season (ESPN) things look even worst:
                          1. Grizzlies 598.
                          2. Warriors 607.
                          3. Clippers 611.
                          4. Raptors 614.
                          5. Wizards 617.

I'm pretty sure if we added playoff wins during that same span we'd be dead last. The Grizzlies have been a successful playoff team for the last couple of years, the Warriors are likely close but still ahead. Clippers should surpass our all-time playoffs wins this season alone and even the Wizards make it eventually.

                              NBA Standings since 2001-02

I think that these NBA standings can also be of interest to our fans. Why? We have been very lucky with our draft selections early in our history, which made us successful for an expansion team. But since 2001-02, we have resembled the worst team in the NBA even though we never actually finished the season last. Here are the standing:

                              1. Washington 350 (worst team).
                              2. Minnesota 353.
                              3. Toronto 357.
                              4. Clippers 378.
