  • Raptors rotation versus the middle of the East

How does the Raptors top 8 rotation stack up versus the middle of the east?

    Raptors top 8:
    PG: Lowry
    SG: DeRozan
    SF: Gay
    PF: Amir
    C: JV
    backup PG: Augustin
    backup wing: Fields
    backup big: Hansbrough

For this thread (and I guess in my opinion, but feel free to disagree below!), the middle of the East is: Knicks, Atlanta, Detroit, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Washington, and Charlotte. **If Rondo was healthy, I'd include Boston but he is not so they are not.**

    Knicks top 8:
    PG: Felton (adv TOR)
    SG: JR Smith (draw)
    SF: Carmelo (Adv NY)
    PF: Bargnani (adv TOR)
    C: Chandler (adv NY)
    backup PG: Udrih (adv NY)
    backup wing: MWP (adv NY)
    backup big: Amar'e (adv TOR)

    4-3-1 NEW YORK

    Atlanta top 8:
    PG: Teague (draw)
    SG: Korver (draw)
    SF: Carroll (adv TOR)
    PF: Millsap (adv ATL)
    C: Horford (adv ATL)
    backup PG: Schroeder (draw)
    backup wing: Williams (adv ATL)
    backup big: Brand (draw)

    3-1-4 ATLANTA

    Detroit top 8:
    PG: Jennings (draw)
    SG: Singler (adv TOR)
    SF: Smith (draw)
    PF: Monroe (adv DET)
C: Drummond (this is tough: homer vs reality..... cop out draw)
    backup PG: Bynum (adv DET)
    backup wing: KCP (adv DET)
    backup big: Mitchell (adv TOR)

    3-2-3 DETROIT

    Milwaukee top 8:
    PG: Knight (adv TOR)
    SG: Mayo (draw)
    SF: Butler (adv TOR)
    PF: Ilyasova/Henson (draw)
    C: Sanders (adv MIL)
    backup PG: Ridnour (adv MIL)
backup wing: Antetokounmpo (early adv TOR, as year progresses adv MIL so draw)
    backup big: Ilyasova/Henson (adv MIL)

    3-2-3 MILWAUKEE

    Washington top 8:
    PG: Wall (adv WAS)
SG: Beal (draw but my guess is by year end adv WAS)
    SF: Ariza (adv TOR)
    PF: Nene (draw)
    C: Okafor (adv TOR)
    backup PG: Maynor (draw)
    backup wing: Webster (adv WAS)
backup big: Harrington (coming off injury, veteran, lights out thus far in preseason = draw)

    2-2-4 DRAW

    Charlotte top 8:
    PG: Walker (draw)
    SG: Henderson (adv TOR)
    SF: MKG (adv TOR)
    PF: Jefferson (adv CHA)
    C: Biyombo (adv TOR)
    backup PG: Sessions (adv CHA)
    backup wing: Taylor (draw)
    backup big: Zeller (draw)

    3-2-3 TORONTO

    Cleveland top 8:
    PG: Irving (adv CLE)
    SG: Waiters (adv TOR)
    SF: Clark (adv TOR)
    PF: Thompson (draw)
    C: Varejo/Bynum (adv CLE)
    backup PG: Jack (adv CLE)
    backup wing: Miles/Gee (adv CLE)
    backup big: Bennett/Varejo (adv CLE)

    5-2-1 CLEVELAND

Without my crystal ball, injuries are tough to factor in. Either way, I don't like Toronto's odds when it comes to this totally subjective examination. Toronto ends 1-5-1 in the roster match ups versus the Eastern middling powers.

Is it me or are you starting to come around on this team Matt?

In my opinion, KCP is not a clear win against Fields, just because of lack of experience.

IMO! Knicks match up bad against Toronto. Nobody in the opening line up plays Defense except Chandler. Both go to guys cant stop one another only difference is Gay unlike Melo tries on D to hopefully slow Melo down a bit, Gay can go to town on Melo.

          Raptors top 8:
          PG: Lowry
          SG: DeRozan
          SF: Gay
          PF: Amir
          C: JV
          backup PG: Augustin/Buycks
          backup wing: Fields
          backup big: Hansbrough

          Knicks top 8:
          PG: Felton (adv TOR)
SG: JR Smith (adv TOR DeRozan w/ current Pre-season Progress)
          SF: Carmelo (adv NY)
PF: Bargnani (Draw. Bargnani has a lot of up and a hell of a lot of down, Amir has played with him enough to know how to handle him ala pre-season)
C: Chandler (Draw. I'd say JV's increase in size will allow him to box out Tyson. Tyson has more experience but not as great of a shot)
          backup PG: Udrih (adv NY)
backup wing: MWP (Draw, Fields is just as good as MWP in a Role Play and D. scruff player)
backup big: Amar'e (Draw Although Amar'e is more skilled, he is a fraction of the player that he used to be)

          2-2-4 DRAW

          Atlanta top 8:
          PG: Teague (draw)
SG: Korver (adv TOR. DeMar can create shots, Korver is catch and shoot)
          SF: Carroll (adv TOR)
          PF: Millsap (adv ATL)
          C: Horford (adv ATL)
          backup PG: Schroeder (draw)
          backup wing: Williams (adv ATL)
          backup big: Brand (draw)

          3-2-3 ATLANTA

          Detroit top 8:
PG: Jennings (adv TOR Klow has much more experience and can run a team vs. young blood w/ natural talent ala TRoss type)
          SG: Singler (adv TOR)
          SF: Smith (draw)
          PF: Monroe (adv DET)
C: Drummond (adv TOR come on. JV is much more talented and can shoot FT, and from the 8-10)
          backup PG: Bynum (adv DET)
          backup wing: KCP (adv DET)
          backup big: Mitchell (adv TOR)

          4-3-1 TOR

          Milwaukee top 8:
          PG: Knight (adv TOR)
SG: Mayo (adv TOR DeMar bc he can finish at the net w/ dribble pen & finish. To me Mayo = Korver)
          SF: Butler (adv TOR)
          PF: Ilyasova/Henson (draw)
          C: Sanders (adv MIL)
          backup PG: Ridnour (adv MIL)
backup wing: Antetokounmpo (early adv TOR, as year progresses adv MIL so draw)
          backup big: Ilyasova/Henson (adv MIL)

          3-2-3 TOR

          Washington top 8:
          PG: Wall (adv WAS)
SG: Beal (draw. Beal doesn't have the 12-14 like Demar does but can finish @ the net)
          SF: Ariza (adv TOR)
PF: Nene (adv TOR Nene is lazy. Amir has hustle)
          C: Okafor (adv TOR)
          backup PG: Maynor (draw)
          backup wing: Webster (adv WAS)
backup big: Harrington (coming off injury, veteran, lights out thus far in preseason = draw)

          3-2-3 TOR

          Charlotte top 8:
          PG: Walker (adv TOR)
          SG: Henderson (adv TOR)
          SF: MKG (adv TOR)
          PF: Jefferson (adv CHA)
          C: Biyombo (adv TOR)
          backup PG: Sessions (adv CHA)
          backup wing: Taylor (draw)
          backup big: Zeller (adv CHA)

          4-3-1 TORONTO

          Cleveland top 8:
          PG: Irving (adv CLE)
          SG: Waiters (adv TOR)
          SF: Clark (adv TOR)
PF: Thompson (adv TOR amir w/ experience)
          C: Varejo/Bynum (adv CLE)
          backup PG: Jack (adv CLE)
          backup wing: Miles/Gee (adv CLE)
          backup big: Bennett/Varejo (adv CLE)

          4-3-1 CLEVELAND

From my perspective, Toronto has a chance to win against every single one of the teams mentioned. It's very close. Could go both ways.

I disagree with a few of these:

            Knicks top 8:
            PG: Felton (adv TOR)
SG: JR Smith (Adv NY - Smith is a better shooter and shot creator than DeMar)
            SF: Carmelo (Adv NY)
            PF: Bargnani (adv TOR)
            C: Chandler (adv NY)
            backup PG: Udrih (adv NY)
            backup wing: MWP (adv NY)
backup big: K-Mart (draw) - it's not Amar'e, he'll be lucky to play twenty games this year

4-2-2 NEW YORK but this one could go the other way very easily; New York is closer to collapse than any "playoff" team there is, everybody else is mostly very certain about where they end up but NY could be a catastrophe in the making. Just such wide potential variance.

            Atlanta top 8:
            PG: Teague (draw)
SG: Korver (adv ATL - dead-eye shooter)
            SF: Carroll (adv TOR)
            PF: Millsap (adv ATL)
            C: Horford (adv ATL)
            backup PG: Schroeder (draw)
            backup wing: Williams (adv ATL)
            backup big: Brand (draw)

4-1-3 ATLANTA - People are underrating Atlanta as always. This is basically the same team as last year, except Millsap is better than J-Smoove was and Brand is maybe a bit down from Zaza but not much - and last year they won 44 games.

            Detroit top 8:
PG: Jennings (adv TOR - Jennings is a streaky shooter and not the floor general Detroit needs, also he is bad at D)
            SG: Singler (adv TOR)
SF: Smith (adv DET - Smith can't shoot long but it doesn't matter, his game is superior to Rudy's in every other way and it's not like Rudy is a great shooter these days)
            PF: Monroe (adv DET)
            C: Drummond (draw)
            backup PG: Bynum (adv DET)
backup wing: KCP (adv TOR - KCP is unproven and shown not a lot)
            backup big: Mitchell (adv TOR)

4-3-1 TORONTO - It's hardly a bold prediction but Greg Monroe will get likely traded before the end of the season for a better point guard. Rondo, maybe. Goran Dragic, very possible (and Dragic would make Detroit potentially terrifying, you move Jennings to shooting guard, ugh). When they do that, all bets are off.

            Milwaukee top 8:
            PG: Knight (adv TOR)
SG: Mayo (adv MIL - I don't think there's a team in the league that takes DeMar over Mayo at this point until DeMar shows he can shoot at an equivalent level)
            SF: Butler (adv TOR)
PF: Ilyasova/Henson (adv MIL - I love Amir but Ersan is just super-efficient)
            C: Sanders (adv MIL)
            backup PG: Ridnour (adv MIL)
backup wing: Carlos Delfino or Gary Neal (adv MIL) - if things get good enough that Giannis is the backup wing then it's super-advantage MIL - you have to remember that Milwaukee has a really deep bench
            backup big: Ilyasova/Henson (adv MIL)

6-2-0 MILWAUKEE - Everybody slept on Milwaukee because they don't have big names (maybe Sanders?), but basically the entire team is good-if-not-great players. Nobody on Milwaukee sucks. They're consistent. If Brandon Knight or Giannis or Henson have a breakthrough year, they'll be more than consistent.

            Charlotte top 8:
PG: Walker (adv CHA - Walker is probably the best young point guard in the league except for Damian Lillard)
SG: Henderson (adv CHA - Henderson is basically a more efficient DeRozan right now)
            SF: MKG (adv TOR)
            PF: Zeller (adv TOR)
            C: Jefferson (draw)
            backup PG: Sessions (adv CHA)
            backup wing: Taylor (draw)
            backup big: McRoberts (adv TOR)

3-3-2 DRAW - Sad but true.

Basketball isn't 5 games of 1 on 1 though, so none of this really matters imo. Has to do more with how the teams play as a unit.

                I most definitely agree.

If the my turn, your turn offence that has been a stable under Casey for 2 years and this preseason continues, Toronto is in for an even more difficult season that previously thought.

I think it also depends on which starters are still on the floor when the 2nd unit comes in.

I don't think offense is going to be that is heavy. We hired 3 offensive minded assistants to run things, And honestly we haven't seen any real plays Casey just sends line ups out and let's them play to observe the talent selectively.

This needs to be stressed. I agree that Toronto's starters are reasonably solid - problematic in some ways but none of them are bad players particularly. Our bench, though? Is not great, and that feels like last year's Blazers to me: good starters plus no bench equals exhausted starters by midseason.

Btw, Lou Williams is still recovering, I believe he's out until the AS game last i heard. So Jenkins is the backup wing. Or Carroll, depends on who starts.

Never been a fan of these type of position-by-position comparisons to pick the better team. Back when the Lebron Cavs were winning 50+ games, they'd probably score like 1-7 for the top 8 players, against any half decent team. The other thing missing is how the pieces fit together. Detroit has nice individual players and they score well on this type of comparison, but the offensive spacing and shooting from distance seems like it could be a big problem with that lineup.
