  • The Do It All At Once Trade

TO CHICAGO: Kyle Lowry, Dion Waiters
TO CLEVELAND: Luol Deng, DeMar DeRozan
TO CHARLOTTE: Rudy Gay, Steve Novak, Tyler Hansbrough, Mike James
TO TORONTO: Andrew Bynum, Anthony Bennett, Ben Gordon, Jeff Adrien, Ramon Sessions, and a whole lot of draft picks in some amount from the other teams

Chicago gets a starting PG for the year who fits into the Chicago system easily and who wants to excel, plus an SG to replace Butler when Butler moves to SF post-Deng. Cleveland gets a good scorer in DeRozan and Deng, who is good at basically everything. Charlotte gets Rudy for the useless Ben Gordon and adds good playoff pieces. Toronto gets rid of most of its tradeable assets and players it needs gone anyway in one fell swoop, gets Bennett, gets a lot of expiring salary, and gets draft picks.

Someone has spent too much time on the trade machine, lol.

Which teams would be jumping to give us draft picks in this deal? And why?

Why would defense-first Chicago have any interest in bringing in Waiters, master of the Matador Defense?
Why would Charlotte bring in an overpaid SF when they just used a #2 pick on MKG? Why would they bring in Pycho T when they already have Jefferson, McBob, Zeller and Biyumbo?
Why would Cleveland give up on their most recent #1 pick when his value is at it's lowest for 1 player and 1 soon-to-be free agent?

Sorry to be so down on your work here, but you have to look at these trades from the other teams perspective as well.

Chicago needs scoring; without Rose they're one of the lowest-scoring competitive teams in the league. They can afford to give up some D at shooting guard because SG is the weakest position in the league (and besides, I would have faith in Tom Thibodeau that he can get any player to buy into his system). Whatever else you think of Waiters: he can score.

They bring in Rudy for the same reason we traded for him: they need a clutch player and they don't have one. They bring in Psycho T not because they need a fifth big but because they need a foul-drawing specialist. Toronto fans have bought into Hansbrough being a third or fourth big but as a big he's strictly replacement-level value at the best of times: you want Hansbrough because in a key situation he draws fouls, often forcing the other team to change their lineup, and getting some free throw points at the same time.

Why would Cleveland give up on their most recent #1 pick when his value is at it's lowest for 1 player and 1 soon-to-be free agent?
Because his value IS the lowest. Because he's a power forward, not a small forward, and Cleveland has Thompson and Varajao and Tyler Zeller already in terms of quality bigs and they don't need to spend five million on their fourth big who's a tweener anyway. Because he's clearly suffering in Cleveland's dysfunctional team culture. And because, above all, Cleveland wants and needs to win now - remember, their entire plan for years has been "get LeBron back" and they're not going to get LeBron back if they aren't solidly competitive at least. Bennett doesn't help them win now. DeMar and Deng probably will.

i think lowry makes a lot of sense for the bulls, if they decide to stick with it and make a playoff run without rose, like they did last year.

and if they go this route, and i can't really see thibs having it any other way, i can't fathom them moving deng. without rose he's their best and most versatile player, he's thibs' favorite player and led the whole league in minutes last year.

if they move him it's for a full on tear down and rebuild. i also wouldn't expect thibodeau to stick around for that
