  • Lowe: Young Players Wating to take the Leap (JV Stuff)

Zach Lowe doing awesome work again with a big section on JV.

    http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/...leap-greatness

One reason is simple: This team belongs to Rudy Gay and DeMar DeRozan, for better or worse. Even sets that don't start with those guys — a Kyle Lowry–Valanciunas pick-and-roll, for instance — probably will end with one of them isolating, curling around a screen, or taking a dribble handoff before dribbling a bunch and heaving a midrange jumper. Lots of Toronto possessions look great for 12 seconds, before devolving into hero ball for the last eight or 10. "He's third on the food chain," Casey says, "and sometimes even fourth. Our offense is built around Rudy and DeMar." Valanciunas is often left to simply get out of the way and prepare for an offensive rebound
But Lowe also points out Valaciunas' issues...

But Valanciunas often rolls to the hoop before making any contact on his pick, meaning he has provided Kyle Lowry, Gay, or DeRozan with no daylight — no space to penetrate, no clear angle to hit Valanciunas in the lane. "He feels like he's open," Casey says, "but he's not. He's just so far down there. He needs to learn the short roll."

On defense, the Drakes employ a fairly aggressive pick-and-roll scheme that asks big men to jump out hard on ball handlers — or at least hang around the level of the pick. Valanciunas has the mobility to do that, and he's a hard worker. But the timing just isn't there. He'll often slide into help position just a beat late, leaving himself in no-man's-land — too late to cut off the ball handler or even get in the guy's way, but still far enough from his original mark that a dangerous passing lane is open.

Read the whole thing as they say. Good stuff on Rubio as well.

    Good find, good read.
    "Bruno?
Heh, if he is in the D-league still in a few years I will be surprised.
    He's terrible."

    Hope you're wrong.

This picture sums it all up:

JV: "I am open and play for your team!"
          Rudy: Nope.

The part where it talks about Valanciunas being too early for his pick, finally someone pointing this out instead they Bash Lowry for a wild pass. Jonas has to be prepared for wild passes, if he's not, he's asking for trouble.

The worst part of that picture is that Valanciunas isn't even the only open play:

                1. entry pass to Valanciunas (although I think the pass would be picked-off from this angle)

                2. two dribbles and pass to the player open in the left corner

                3. immediate pass to DeRozan on the opposite corner (for shot)

                4. immediate pass to DeRozan on the opposite corner, followed by a swing to Lowry in the corner (his man is likely to rush DeRozan)

                5. immediate pass to DeRozan on the opposite corner, followed by an entry pass to Valanciunas (if his man rushes out to DeRozan, leaving Valanciunas possibly posting up a PG)

                6. immediate pass to DeRozan on the opposite corner, followed by an immediate dribble penetration and kickout to one of the 3 perimeter players (ie: back to Gay, or to either corner), since one of them is likely to be left extremely wide open

It's true, but the flip side/context is that the perimeter players almost never use the pick. It's damn hard for the big to get his timing down when the ball handler isn't even dribbling in his direction. You see Jonas hopping around, trying to screen his guy, and he never really gets set because Rudy/DeMar is dribbling around and drifting away from the screen. Then Jonas dumps the play and rolls to the basket. Of course he's not open - the whole play is screwed.

Not saying he can't work on his screens - just saying it's hard to judge the big's effectiveness when the ball handler isn't running the play properly.

Solid analysis. Too bad Gay only sees the hoop and the clock.

B..b.but....the PnR was a bit of a staple for JV in his Euroland play. Why was he at least adequate there? Can DC explain this?

The "Drakes"!! Haha. The defensive scheme described there is the classic Chandler usage in Dallas when DC was there. But JV gets caught quite often...not as quick as Chandler.

To be fair that's a tough pass to make. The better play would be to swing it to DD.

                          Lowe needs more Raps ball.

JV didn't always move too soon on his screens, Lowry doesn't use them properly, if he uses them at all, and that is because he stays high and doesn't bother to drag his guy into the pick because lets be honest, he isnt even thinking about utilizing the roll.

Guys love Lowe, but I dont. Calling the Raps the Drakes, and his other piece where he basically shit all over the raptors in a snide "brush off" kinda way..... I aint in his corner. Nope.

Well its a pretty easy drive and dish too though...but Rudy would rather die once he is in motion to the rack, he is a black hole
