Someone wrote an article in Sportsnet magazine talking about exactly that, how people in Toronto are so quick to love the flawed overacheiver who makes up for talent with energy and determination but we completely pick apart every player who is legitimately a star until they feel unappreciated.
Ya, it's a weird phenomenon, and only seems to affect Toronto.

Acy, Pops, Reggie Evans, JYD, Bonner, etc.

Meanwhile, Carter, Bosh, DeRozan, etc. get shredded.

This topic needs some more analysis.

I am honestly drawing a blank on this one. Can you name a couple say in the last 10-15 yrs....legitimate stars who griped at unwarranted treatment. I did not read the piece but agree fully with the first part...I think mostly in part because so many wanna be divas walk thru this town.

Inferiority complex. Low franchise esteem. Where's Dr. Phil when you need him?!

Or is it management/media's fault for always forcing the team's top player into the role of 'franchise player', even when they're best suited (talent-wise and/or personality-wise) to be a 2nd or 3rd banana on a legitimately good team? There's been such desperation to make this franchise relevant in the Toronto/Canadian/NBA marketplace, that we fans have been guilty of worshipping false idols, so it's no wonder they start believing their own hype.

Or I wonder if it's partially to do with "keeping the dream alive" for wannabe athletes.

"Hey, if all it takes is a little hard work for a no-talent dipshit like Pops Mensah Bonsu to crack an NBA roster, then I could totally do this!"

Sundin, Bautista, Belfour, Curtis Joseph, Bosh, Halladay wasn't pick apart but was ignored until he left then everyone loved him, Mogilny, Carter we (including me) turned on.

Those same type of players, and in some cases those exact players, in other cities were treated like kings and talked about like superstars.

I think fan favorites are always "heart, hustle" guys. We haven't had a star talent who really demonstrated these qualities (Demar had these but many questioned the star aspect).

Yep. It's a perceived overall valuation of talent X character that the fans are making. The only Toronto major sports athletes I can think of in recent memory (...lol, dating myself) who had both are Dougie and Wendel - and they are immortalized on TO's Mount Rushmore.

Hockey lends itself to more physical contact, so I think it's easier to be perceived as a 'hustle' guy in that sport. If you're not at least an average scorer, then you pretty much have to be a heart, energy guy or defensive specialist to even stay with the big club.

And being responsible defensively and hustling is perceived as being unselfish and team-oriented, when in actual fact if you relieved those un-skilled players from those duties, they wouldn't score anywhere near at the clip of the talented guys.

I don't think it's at all related to Toronto though. All fan bases cheer for heart and hustle players, just some teams have talented star players who demonstrate heart and hustle too.

It doesn't only affect toronto lots of cities have always appreciated the blue collar guys who bring their lunch pail to work. Philly, Boston, detroit, cities like this always do the same thing.

Apparently Acy is being considered very strongly for the starting PF spot on New York this year. Interesting to say the least.

Yes, we love the blue collar guy. New York loves the blue collar guy. Chicago loves the blue collar guy. Philly....you get the picture. If you're winning a championship or you've got Lebron, you love the front runner but for all of us others, it's the blue collar guy. Just what I've noticed being in other cities. We're not alone. It's sort of our way of saying we're happy with what we've got while we complain about the biggest "star" who couldn't get is there.
