Of course its a dose of reality, this is like the 2006 season all over again with some of the Raptors "homer" fans dancing for joy of getting to play the New Jersey nets because they thought they were good enough to beat Vince Carter and his gang. Right now its the same thing with some Raptor fans thinking that they can for sure beat certain playoff match ups, which is again overconfident mistake of this team and its true ability.

The reality is that any team headed into the playoffs that will be facing the Raptors has a very good chance of beating the Raptors because there really won't be a big advantage out there between the sixth seed and the third seed.
Exactly! I love to see the confidence most people seem to have in this team but it kind of shocks me lol. We have a team that has very little playoffs experience, we rely heavily on two sophomores (and one is playing really bad at the moment), and we play VERY inconsistently throughout a game. We also don't have a good record against teams 500 and over and we lose more than we win when we play games that are 5 points or less with about 3 minutes or so to go. There's a stat that I read on twitter that proves these things but I can't remember who tweeted it. Anyway, those are not good recipes for success come playoff time. It's all understandable because we are a young growing team but I think people are a little too overconfident about the Raps getting out of the first round. I won't say they can't but it's not as likely as some think, no matter who we face.

Your unrivaled negativity makes it seem like people are more optimistic than they actually are. Pretty sure most Raptors fans know it'll be a tough series no matter who they face in the first round.

LOL bro you're acting like we're playing in Western Conference. Who is our competition? Washington is 9-18 against + .500 teams. Bulls are 10-15. Brooklyn is 10-18. We are 11-17. Yes it's true we are 2-5 when game is decided by 3 points or less but we are 18-5 when its decided by 10. Chicago is 16-14 when decided by 10. Was is 11-11 and Brooklyn is 10-17. Reality is everyone sucks in the East LOL

The sad reality is that the average Raptor fan is always more optimistic and thinks that they are better then they actually are because they are the casual fan who just watch the game on television from time to time or attends a game or two and doesn't follow or cares too much about statistics or analytics like more passionate hardcore fans (ergo the thinking we have a winning record so we obviously on our way to bigger and better things down the road right is not always right). This is the main reason why Colangelo was able to stick around for 7 long years and kept selling the idea that next year will be better and most fans did drink the koolaid which is why he lasted so long.

If the Raptors want to be a winning and competitive playoff team for years to come then this team will need a major face lift in the next year or so.

    Dose of reality.

Don't get me wrong, I love watching this team and I think the writer is over-exaggerating, but the chasm between the Raptors and Pacers/Heat, and the top 5 or 6 teams in the West, is significant.

That being said, Portland might be the best 3 seed in a long ass time.
nah, their place in the standings is mainly due to their incredible start, and doesn't really tell the full picture in terms of how good they are at the moment (to be fair, they're streaking positively again). they've been mostly mediocre the last couple months, and it wouldn't be too big of a surprise if they dropped down to 5th or 6th.

as for the raps, they're far better than they were earlier in the season (duh), so you could argue that they are better than their record indicates. long way to go, though, and it wouldn't be overly surprising if they hit a bit of a skid (they're due) & the nets passed them. the east is pretty bad, so there's virtually no chance of missing the playoffs, but slipping to 6th or worse would be pretty awful. most assume that the worst spot to be would be 7th or 8th and have to play MIA or IND in the 1st rd, but finishing 6th & taking on CHI wouldn't be much different.

The Raps are on pace to win ~45 games.

Last year, the 3rd seeded Pacers won 49 games.
In 2011-12, the 3rd seeded Pacers won the equivalent of 52 games (in a lockout shortened season).
    2010-11: Celtics won 56 games
    2009-10: Hawks won 53 games.
    2008-09: Magic won 59 games.

So it's not a stretch to say this current Raptors team doesn't meet the general standard of a conventional 3rd seed.

I think this team is totally under rated, they have beaten some good teams from the west and really have only been dominated by Miami and LAC. This team doesn't pass the name test, but that does not make them anyless relavent. They have been a +. 600 since the Rudy Gay trade and have a chance at winning 50 games. It's going to be tough but the Raps could go 11-5 in March and 6-2 in April with losses to @Miami, vs.OKC, vs.Pacers, vs.Suns, vs.Rockets (all +.500 and probably will steal at least one of these games), and two to three losses against sub .500 teams. If they don't they are at least sniffing 50 games. That's pretty impressive for a team that started 6-12.

This team is a below average 3rd seed. Probably closer to the bottom of that range than the middle, actually.

BUT, we all know that. Teams like the Celtics and the Pacers were legitimate contenders, or at least were looking to give the top seeds a run for their money.

We all know that Toronto is realistically more of a 5/6th seed on a regular year. But I honest to goodness don't think that that takes away from what we've done. 5/6th seed in the West any year is a very respectable place to finish in the league.

We aren't pseudo-contenders yet (which most 3rd seeds are) but we're trending in the right direction.

'last couple months'; since dec 26th, when they were 24-5, they've gone 17-13. if you want to be picky, in their literal 'last couple months,' they've gone 15-10 (10-10 prior to their recent 5 game winning streak, which was against Utah, Minny, the Nyets & Denver twice. not exactly impressive competition. one could argue that their last truly quality win was...a month ago, against the Raps), so, yeah, considering how they started, they've been pretty mediocre since. which is pretty much what the advanced metrics were screaming all season long.

They were pretty banged up...and LA hit a bit of a slump. At one point Lopez, Aldridge, Robinson, Freeland and Leonard were all injured...pretty tough to win with that.

They are getting things back together now though

not sure if you've noticed, but the warriors - much like the wolves - aren't nearly as good as you'd assume they'd be given the talent on the roster. that's to take nothing away from the W against the W's.

'01 Heat were pretty bad for a 3rd seed. The year they lost Alonzo Mourning but still finished no.3.
