Atlanta cheaped out and refused to pay to retain their players, see Carroll, and then try to move forwards from there and that's why they took a step back this year.
Plus both Teague and Korver had awful years. Korver's a streaky guy who's in his 30's while Teague looks like he could be shipped to let Schroeder start.

We won't hear back from him. He dissapears into thin air and reappears when you least expect it. Ten is an enigma. Ten is a legend. Ten for the motherfucking win.

I can't wait until the playoffs start.

Until then, opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one and they most often stink

The biggest issue I have with Casey is the offense. The JV underutilization has been covered. My bigger beef is that whether it's the guard-centric approach or a JV post-up, there seems to be no play-calling for off-the-ball players. The only movement is designed around the first move. Once Lowry/DeRozan get the ball in an attack position, or JV gets the ball on the low post, everybody else just stands around watching. It's little wonder that the offense so often stagnated in the playoffs, without even discussing the hero-ball.

The team needs a more layered offensive strategy to get shooters open looks. Of course, on the other hand (ie: good coach, roster needs big upgrades), the 'shooters' were atrocious in the playoffs (ie: Carroll, Patterson, Ross, Lowry, etc...), so it didn't really make a difference. However, if the team does decide to run the offense more through JV (even just to bring some better inside/out balance), he can't be expected to facilitate if his teammates are all standing still. The offense needs to design movement and picks, etc... to get a particular guy an open look at a particular spot on the court, so JV has a set place to go with an outlet pass.

It wasn't just the hero-ball that was bad, but the fact that the hero-ball was often surrounded by poor shooters or shooters that didn't have any off-ball plays to run. That's how a bad situation that depends on too shooters to get hot becomes exacerbated, to the points that they get embarrassed.
Now that we learned that Casey is coming back, the question becomes is UJIRI bringing in an assistant offensive specialist ? a la Messina...

      • I guess it's official. Casey is Masai's guy.

Yep. Thank goodness he showed some signs of growth in these playoffs - gives me hope (just hope so far rather than full on confidence) for the future.

          • Giving casey an extension is a stupid move. an inevitable one, but stupid.

            Not a good coach.

What happens if we lose guys like Kalamian and Greer though? Feels like both guys had a good impact on the staff. What if growth had a lot to do with him actually using those guys?

That's a hell of a question. Truth is, we have no idea what goes on, how much of the changes were Casey vs. assistants. I know Kalamian has been credited with a lot of the development stuff this past year, and Greer with the defensive adjustments.

In a league with so many Diva's, you've got to be able to get men motivated. As far as I can tell, Casey is well liked by every single guy on the team, and he has them playing balls to the wall when it matters. As far as the X's and O's, Casey definitely leaves something to be desired. However, Casey has coached this team to increasingly better records each year, and just took this franchise to the ECF where he pushed the Cavs to 6 games. I'll agree that Casey isn't an ELITE coach, but he's definitely a good, borderline great coach.

Then we hope Masai can find similarly talented assistants.

I think they did a good job for the most part, playing a role in this year's over all success, sidelines improvements and better decision making, however rookies bigger guys player development in the last few years was not great,i'm aware we didn't have a dleague before,(I think Stackhouse is in charge this year for mother team, did very well with JV and BIZ),I know Caboclo and Bebe made good progress(JJ really deserve part of credit for that, working out together, playing 1 on 1,2 on 2, before this season) with the 905 a first year dleague team that is so important, but still the significant time spent and somewhat slow progress(Coboclo Bebe) makes me wonder if we have the wright people/program(Raptors+905) for player developmental tasks and/or if that Brasilian connection there is creating a mental laid back, relaxed atmosphere that could affect the pace of improvement for both.

I dunno how you could say rookie development has been bad. The Brazilians are both projects and imo bebe is ready for end of rotation. Wright looks ready to play backup pg for most teams in the league and we drafted a guy in the late 40s who is 100% ready for rotation minutes on any team.

I said big guys rookies(Coboclo Bebe) progress is slow, not Wright and Powell(Powell proved his merit)while still waiting for Wright to emerge(he's 24).
