  • "Pros" and "cons" in re-signing Bosh - UPDATE: Walsh doesn't think CB4 is a max guy

Seeing how a max contract would likely pay Bosh in upwards of $21 million dollars per season, perhaps we should start a list of "pros" and "cons" in re-signing Bosh this summer.

I mean, perhaps we seriously should explore more feasible options for this team come this summer. Do we really want a maximum contract player on a sub-par basketball team?

Then no one is talking about the post-CBA negotiation implications of a $21M/yr contract on a potentially reduced hard cap.

There is talk the contract will be grandfathered in and whatever number the new max salary ends up being will be what Bosh's salary acts as. So making 21 million, only counting as 18. Mhen.

      I like this pro's, con's idea.

Pro's- has the best inside-outside game of anyone in the NBA, can take it inside and finish and 1 or hit the mid range jumper when the defender sags off him, good rebounder, good free throw shooter, not afraid to hit the big shot in close games and has a pretty impressive highlight reel of game winners, seems to believe in winning over putting up stats, just coming into his prime and improves his game every year.

con's- injury prone, not a great leader, an average at best defender, not a good passer for a big man, bad at passing out of the double team, can't carry a team on his back like his salary will suggest, tends to drift through games shooting 18 footers and likely to do so after he signs his extension, doesn't block or alter shots around the basket, doesn't make his teammates better, hasn't elevated his game in either trip to the post season, hard to build around, second banana masquerading as a first banana, seems to blame others rather than stepping up and taking responsibility for the teams inadequacies, is the Rupaul of big man

        Pros
        - 20/10/2
        - 50% FG
        - 80% FT (good for a big man who gets fouled a lot)

        Cons
        - .2 blks (sad for 6'10" guy)
        - PF who scores off the dribble outside 15 feet (less offensive rebounds/putbacks, no ball rotation)
        - not a vocal leader, more of a criticizer
        - not a closer
        - too soft on defense, doesnt box out

Bosh, like his predecessor, is settling for jump shots 60% of the time when he can beat 90% of the guys guarding him off the dribble. Not sure why he's totally falling in love with the j, maybe because its easier but it needs to stop. He needs to move in closer and reserve the jumper for when things are tight in the middle. There are many times when I stop and wonder why he's settling. He can hit the jumper with consistency, fair enough, but he's not creating as many problems or working the opposing D by doing that. No one is racking up fouls when he's stopping, faking and popping. They can let him shoot that all night, they know they can take it back the other way and score on him and company with ease.

Donny Walsh doesn't think Bosh is a max money guy

For similar reasons, Walsh will have to decide whether Chris Bosh is worthy of a max deal if he strikes out on LeBron. Sources familiar with Walsh’s thinking are convinced that he does not regard Bosh as being on the same level as James and Wade, who will be the only two clear-cut max players on the market. “That’s the fallacy with the max,” one prominent agent said. “It allows you to buy Chris Bosh for the same price as LeBron James.” In fact, another person familiar with Walsh’s strategy said if it came down to deciding whether to keep David Lee or sign Bosh to a max deal, Walsh would choose Lee. “There are questions about whether Bosh is the kind of player who can carry a team by himself,” the person said. “He certainly hasn’t done it in Toronto.”

he is a max player if you only look at stats
and if defense and passion or leadership doesn't matter

I've always felt that Bosh wasn't a max player. But given he's really had no one to play with in Toronto to help shoulder the work load, he's appeared to many a max player if you look at the stats. He's a second tier player but shouldn't discussed at the same sentence as the Kobe's, LeBron's & Wade's. Those are max players. But fortunately for Bosh, he'll be getting his paid day this summer. Unfortunate for us if we're the ones that offer it to him.

Oh ya, and do you blame for Walsh for sticking to his guns and deciding to keep Lee over Bosh? Sure Chris might be the better player, but their stats are almost identical and the Knicks can get alot more creative with their line-up be signing Lee to a much cheaper contact instead of the giving the max to Bosh and limiting them.

I think that Bosh would be closer to a Max-Contract-Player if he had a coach that was tougher on him. I'm pretty sure Triano is afraid to/has been told not to call out Bosh when he's not playing up to par. Since he's come back from injury he's been afraid to take it to the rack and is settling just like that Vince guy did before he bailed. If he was playing for somebody like Flip Saunders, Jerry Sloan, Greg Popovic, etc.. he would have been sat down and told what he needs to do. Instead, Triano just keeps praying that Bosh will go back to his former self and bring the driving game back. So I think that Bosh would be a Max player if he had a coach with either a spine or more control over what happens with his team.

Isn't this the elephant in the room. Everyone keeps questioning whether Bosh is leaving or staying and no one in the media seems to ask the question whether any team should sign him for max money. The max money deal is an absolute cap killer if the guy is not worth it and not bringing intangibles such as leadership, work ethic and marketability.

Is it possible that teams are going to be unwilling to sign him to the super max deal that we can offer him via a S and T?

As short as three years ago, every team in the L would of jumped at the chance to ink him to a nine figure deal. As a result of the economic crisis that has 90 percent of the owners losing money and the new CBA looming , a new NBA is emerging where max deals might be hard to come by.

Bosh might not want to resign here, but he might be forced to in lieu of the realization that no one is willing to pay him the kind of money he thinks he deserves.

Great point, Bosh believes he is a max player. If nobody really believes that he's worth the max and is forced to stay in TO, he's gonna have a lot of proving to do in the following year. I hope that is the case and he has to stay here and prove some people wrong. As always, only time will tell...
