I said we needed a rebound-grabber, not a center. Setting aside whether any of our non-Jonas interchangeable PF-Cs (Johnson, Patterson, Hansbrough, Hayes, Bebe) is enough of a center to adequately spell Jonas for all the time that Casey has him off the floor, which of them is actually rebounding at a better rate than our SFs are?

Johnson is still active defensively, but one of the surest signs that his ankles are giving him ongoing trouble is the extent that his rebounding is down noticeably. Patterson, our stretch four, isn't close enough to basket often enough to haul in a lot of offensive rebounds, and doesn't seem to be particularly active in going after defensive ones. Hansbrough is on the floor to be an aggressive man defender and pest; any rebounds we get on top of that are a bonus. Hayes gets floor time for his hortizontal leverage rather than his vertical leapage, and Bebe is going to have to earn his minutes by performing well in the minutes he may never actually get.

Right now, we have a problem with rebounding, and while better team rebounding would go a fair ways to address it, it would be even better to be able to plug in somebody off the bench when we need Jonas on the bench and we are having problems because we are being out-rebounded. If the players who will fix this for us are PFs, we need another PF; if the players that will fix that for us are centers, then yes, we need a center.

    • When it comes to rebounding, the first solution lies within, as in the current roster picking it up. Only 10 games into the season, and having a record of 8-2, it's no time to panic and start moving parts out to hope for better rebounding. It should be obvious that the team hasn't been running on all cylinders yet, and you bet the coaches see the lack in rebounding intensity far too often. You can also bet that the last thing they want to see at this point is any rash moves that could mess with the chemistry on this team which they're working with, to say nothing of the trade off implications of giving up something of value to get it

The current players need to step it up, and Jonas being more consistently focused would go a long way. Two games ago, Jonas came out in the first qtr beasting it on the boards. As a result, he played the whole 1st qtr, more than any other starter. Sadly, that energy disappeared after that. This last game, he was energetic the whole game on the boards. As a result, he got 34 minutes of PT, grabbed 14 boards, and the Raps outrebounded the Jazz. At this point, the current players simply need to be focused more on the boards. They'll get there. A long season is left for this young team to learn and grow.

      • When JV comes into his own in a few years that may turn the tide. He's making great progress in the meantime.

I hear ya, but the examples you gave were C's, no? I'm not sure either Olynyk or Mozgov would be a good fit anyways. Decent options if we didn't have JV.
