Interesting.
Adam Silver says one team recently suggested that NBA should add fourth game official to accommodate changing nature of game (pace, etc.).

"Not only is that something that is bad for our network partners, but for all of the fan research we have shows that the fans hate it," Silver said. "There may be a compromise in there where we can cut it down significantly."

I'd like to see the NBA do something radical like put authority in the off-court officials with all the video angles, and see if you can do that fast enough to be effective. Let's say you have a team of seven officials each watching a different camera angle. When they see a foul, they push a clicker. More than 1 click in a one-second span and a signal is sent to the on-court official to blow the whistle. (Kinda like Olympic boxing, I think, where multiple judges need to press a clicker within 1 second for a blow to score as a point... maybe not Olympic boxing, I know I've seen it somewhere). For something like a block/charge call, there's a quick majority vote, with the off-court officials getting an immediate slow-motion replay from their angle.
The NBA is a TV sport, and ultimately this is what officials are judged by: whether their on-court calls match the TV replays from multiple angles. Yeah, it's a tough job, we've all heard that narrative. So stop handicapping the system and embrace the technology. You might also cut down on the amount of bitching to the referees, as players and coaches realize that the referees have little ability to actually impact the calls.Last edited by octothorp; Wed Jun 8, 2016, 01:05 PM.
