  • Good Reads - Long Form Articles

I thought I would add this here as place to dump longer form articles that people read that are interesting. If you want to discuss the articles just create a separate thread. I want to keep this as clean as possible so people can just scroll through and click the links they want.

So try to stick to a brief description and the link itself.

Coincidentally, the Kings just let their head of analytics, Dean Oliver, go. So....

...Primarily because they had many chances to draft high and picked badly...that is a killer. Interesting comment re Batum...he likes/wants to play in Toronto! I have heard that Masai likes him and he is a fufa after next season so...but we are not locked in to DeMarre at SF unless he is moved to PF fulltime (which I think is iffy...not big enough).

Quite surprised how many lower picks they were offered for their 8th-9th picks....I would like to think this may be an opportunity for Masai unless there is a certifiable no-brainer with the NY-Den pick next draft. I have seen many posts suggesting (cavalierly I might say) MU trade that for whoever! That pick is going to attract a lot of action.

              The Spurs vs. 76ers

A good piece on the methods used by the orgs. with similar goals but with different results.

Almost forgot this thread existed. There are articles that are great food for thought. Every once in a while I come across one, or someone posts one and then they disappear in time. I found one, which I remember someone had posted a while ago, then another more recent on the same site.

Because this thread is stickied in the NBA forum, it can act as a bit of a library.

Here's the one some had posted a while back arguing optimal lineups have 3 3pt threats and a rim protector.

                http://www.basketballanalyticsbook.c...an-nba-lineup/

From same site, but recent, the concept of how defenses adapt, especially in defending against drive-and-kick. Some teams hold their ground on the perimeter to prevent open 3"s, others collapse and go for the turnover.

Ours was the latter in the 2014-15 season as shown in the article, and still seems to be that way.

Jaws posted this on the difficulty of creating a trustworthy all-in-one defensive stat.

More good stuff from The Ringer, this time on the pick-and-roll.

So far this season, 24.5 percent of all plays that resulted in a shot, foul, or turnover have been executed by either the ball handler or the screener in a pick-and-roll, according to data from Synergy Sports Technology. That number was 14.5 percent in 2006, and it’s been rising steadily ever since. In the 1990s, Michael Jordan ushered in an era of isolation-focused basketball, and it was furthered by Kobe Bryant and other acolytes in the 2000s, but that style of play (which includes post-ups) has declined rapidly in favor of offenses that emphasize ball movement. And in a versatile league that leans on pace-and-space, there’s no better way to accomplish rim penetration and find open 3-point shooters than to run the pick-and-roll.
A few Raptor plays are highlighted, including a Sweet Lou/PPat pick-and-pop from a couple of years ago and these from this year.

The Raptors are blitzing the league on offense, scoring 115.4 points per 100 possessions, and the two-man game plays an integral role. It makes up 27.5 percent of their possessions, on which they score a league-high one point per possession, according to Synergy. A play they run frequently involves a slip screen set by point guard Kyle Lowry for the ball handler, DeMar DeRozan, which is an adaptation of what the Warriors run.

This one stars Demar. How the Raptors manage to get DD to his sweet spots.
Might have been posted elsewhere, but good stuff if you missed it the 1st time.

This one covers 6 innovative ways teams adapt their pick-and-rolls to utilize the skillsets of players involved, with more DD stuff.

There was a back and forth argument between Vantage Sports and Nylon Calculus a year or 2 ago about the Defended FG% stat at NBA.com. Now one of the Vantage guys is working at Nylon Calculus and posted this study, concluding any of the stats outside 6 ft are pretty well useless.

So this leaves us about where we started. Defense is hard to measure and the best approach uses multiple statistics and considers the context in which the players is used. However, most of the player tracking Defended FG% statistics should be left out of the toolbox of defensive evaluation. Unless you’re looking at shots around the basket, the statistics don’t show any stability year-to-year and so it’s hard to tease out the signal from the noise.

I can't see their study with at-the-rim shots from work, but whenever I've looked at it myself, I've gotten pretty much complete noise as well. Even those <6 feet plots show pretty rough correlations. I've basically lost any faith in DFG% as a metric that describes a skill. It's an outcome, but mostly driven by luck/variance with only a few exceptions at each end of the scale.

There is a new Ben Falk website recommended by Zach Lowe:
Very excited to see this project up and running. Follow this man, and learn stuff.
Very apropos that one of Falks first posts is an in-depth breakdown of the Bucks defensive system. Lowe is right, excellent read.
