  • Seems like we got him according to ESPN. Someone needs to throw up that "Everything Anthony Bennett" thread.

    http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/13...oronto-raptors

    Via ESPN:
Former No. 1 pick Anthony Bennett has cleared waivers and will sign with the Toronto Raptors, a source close to the situation told ESPN Insider Jeff Goodman.

Sources tell ESPN.com's Marc Stein that all 30 teams were notified at 5 p.m. ET that Bennett had cleared waivers. The Philadelphia 76ers and Portland Trail Blazers were the only teams with sufficient salary-cap space to claim him, though the Cleveland Cavaliers had a trade exception big enough to absorb Bennett's $5.8 million salary.

Bennett instead walked away from the Minnesota Timberwolves with a $3.65 million buyout and will presumably make up the difference in a deal with Toronto.

The top pick of the 2013 draft by the Cavaliers, Bennett was traded to Minnesota in the Kevin Love deal in the summer of 2014 but struggled in his lone season with the Timberwolves with injuries.

Minnesota had attempted to deal Bennett but could not find a trade partner to take him, a league source previously had told ESPN's Chris Broussard.

    • If Bennett signs, he's my fave to win the starting PF job. At least, if he can keep up his strong play.

Until then, opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one and they most often stink

Hmmmm, wow! I've seen everywhere different opinions on Bennett.. That's what untapped potential does.

                  I read a minimum, 1 year deal.

Most they can offer is minimum - $947k

                    • On the one hand, it's a great environment for him in that he'll have fans who genuinely want him to succeed and have none of the expectations that he's had thus far in his career. On the other hand, it's hard to see where he's going to get playing time here. I still think he's got solid NBA roleplayer potential. If you want him to be a guy who, a year from now, can come in for 15 minutes a game, work well as a second-unit scorer, and if we're lucky, play passable defense against other second units, he could very well become that guy.

It's interesting to go back and reading draft scouting reports, and see how many people noted that he had relatively high bust potential... lots of Beasley, Derrick Williams comparisons.

Amazing! even if he's a flop its a steal to take a chance on him at that price, this could be one of those signing that makes Masai looks like a genius in year or two.

Keep in mind who is "strong play" was against, the fact that he wasn't even all that consistent, and that we have 2 PFs who have shown much much more than him in the NBA and that they actually fit well at that position.

I wish Anthony the best. He's actually a fairly talented guy (and I fully believe a lottery talent in the draft he was in, where I thought he'd go in the 5-10 range), but he just hasn't found any niche in the league at all at this point, and I think that even extends to how he played this summer. He looked very good at times, but also just didn't fit at a lot of moments.

I've always hoped he'd end up something like a Rodney Rogers or Tim Thomas. A big forward who can play either spot, especially as a scorer because they can shoot and are quick/big enough to abuse mismatches...but so far he's just looked like the bazillion tweeners who wash out of the league because they can't find a good fit (and usually aren't good enough at something to fit as specialists). He's looking more like Linas Kleiza than either of those guys.

                          • No risk deal, still has some potential. Perfect third stringer.

                            • hes obviously serious about his basketball career, instead of taking his paycheck and going home if he left 2 mil on the table this year to go to a better situation
i guess thats a good sign

Yeah, I'm totally happy they're adding him to at least give him a look. Again, I think he's talented....

But I'm just not going to be very optimistic/excited until he starts to show something that makes him look like an NBA keeper.
