  • Areas of expertise the front office needs

Hey guys. Was wondering from a fan perspective, what are the areas of expertise or specialization that you think our front office needs to set themselves apart from the rest of the league?

For example, we have Bobby Webster as the cap guy, Jeff Weltman as the analytics guru and Dan Tolzman as the scouting guy. What are some out of the box, or different specialists our front office would benefit from having?

I'd like to see someone that comes up with various on-court basketball strategies for the opposing team from game-to-game that can be applied and altered depending on the effectiveness during real time. I think this would help more with the us increasing our winning chances, primarily, against the more elite teams.

I'm only suggesting this because it didn't feel like the raptors ever really utilized strategy last year from what i saw.

Well, I always felt the coach is the guy that approves what's going to happen during the game and doesn't necessarily always come up with what should happen. He's like the general on the battlefield during a war, more leading the charge and making minute decisions. Idk maybe i'm wrong with this.

I think their should be an external guy that could do that part of his job for him of coming up with strategies, which would allow him to use his time effectively elsewhere, like studying the strengths of his players and personnel.

I don't know if I understand you correctly but teams already have people who scout the opposition and come up with their strengths, weaknesses, tendencies, etc. and relay this info to coaches. Sometimes it's the assistant coaches themselves that do this on planes or before games.

But I like your train of thought, this is exactly the kind of discussion I was hoping for

A team psychologist. I don't know if they have one already: and someone to work with players on their mental game - their desire and focus. I'm looking at you TRoss.

I was at a startup conference a few years back, where there was some interesting research out of the U of Montreal on brain training to speed up reaction times. I think these are the guys. Get a guy who's an expert at that. I'm looking at you JV.

A financial advisor to help the players manage their investments. Make the expertise available to all of them. And maybe even let them pool some money so they can invest as a team.

I assume they already have a team dietician. How about adding in a team chef, who can cook great food like the Googleplex offers? Make it more likely the team eats well by offering amazing food to the players: not just what they want, but healthy, great-tasting food that complements their training. And let their spouses eat it free as well.

What about a party planner / social secretary? Someone who makes sure they find the best things to entertain the players while on the road, and someone who organizes team events and parties, both for players, and their families, so they socialize more together.

And I know they've used a shooting consultant in the past. Why don't they just hire one of the top guys in the world on shooting and put him on staff full time? He can work with the 905ers when he isn't working with the Raps.

I was going to subnet that we have virtually no idea, but these are pretty good ideas.

These are all great ideas! I'm not sure about all of them, the psychologist one makes way too much sense, but I think some of them are already done.

Most agencies now offer Financial Advising as part of the benefits of having an agent. They do get really great food made for them everyday in the locker room after practice. And while there isn't a specific person who does this job, it's usually assigned to someone, to research the places they're going on the road trips and send the players memos regarding this

Many of us have long been arguing that one effective way to get around cap limitations is to spend millions on building an organization replete with these kind of support roles. What would you have to pay the top shooting coach in the world? The best big man coach in the world? The top nutritionist in the world? Etc.

When you look at the top players, they are really just incrementally better. A couple of percentage points in virtually any specific skill can significantly separate players. Whether it's shooting, conditioning, reaction time, speed, power, energy levels.

                  Fully endorse this concept.

I agree, I would have to assume that they have most things on the emply at all times.

I know they have coaches for strength and conditions etc, bigman coaches etc.

The biggest thing is though, that alot of the highest regarded specialty coaches in the game, i would think, do not want to be in the employ of an organization. So you could bring them in, but not monopolize them.

But the nutritionist/cooks, the psychiatrist, ASsistants etc.

IMO training staff should beavailable always be on call as well.

The financial advisor is a good idea, but I am pretty sure the NBA has one in its employ.

Also I would hope that the team has travel agents, realtors, designers, personal shoppers, lawyers etc all available for use by any of the players as/if needed

Yeah the team personally doesn't have the people in the last paragraph, but they certainly have the connections necessary to put players in direct contact with the best in the biz.

Training staff is available on call at whatever time (which must really take a toll on their family life).
But yeah, the specialty coaches, if they're really that great, they'd rather have the freedom and better financial flexibility to work with various players/teams from all over the world, charging something like $25gs a session rather than make $75gs yearly from one single team (cause I don't think te team would be willing to pay them $500grand yearly)

If I had to think of anything (and I'm not sure if they have one already) but a sleep expert would be cool. Raptors play like sh!t in day games typically and since they most likely won't be a big draw in the playoffs unless they are playing the Cavs - they are probably going to get a day game then too.

Have a guy that can help train them to sleep properly so that they are fully rested and optimal during games - especially when they have day games or are on a west coast trip going into denver/utah (where the altitude is high). Or are playing 4 games in 5 nights.

This is exactly the point: why wouldn't the team be willing to pay the best shooting consultant in the world $500,000 yearly? Why wouldn't you assign a budget of $5M to get 10 top people in every sphere?

If the cap went up another $5M the Raps would happily spend up to the cap ... so why not spend that $5M outside the cap?

And the concept of the team paying for the best is far different than the team handing over a list of 'here are good people you can call, and pay for yourself'.

Let's take the financial advisors for a second. Sure, every agent can put people in touch with financial advisors. And what if the Raptors offered a lifetime 'Guaranteed Income Plan' to all of their players? For every $1M you invest in the plan, you get an inflation-adjusted $50,000 annual income for life. Play for the Raps, and never have to worry about your post-NBA retirement! Heck, make it available to coaches to. The team can pay all the financial planning fees - or at least the first $500K/year in fees - and have a person or small team take care of it. Like a mini-Ontario Teachers Pension Plan. No player would pay $500K/year to manage their money. The team can.

Chefs? I'll bet the team currently has a $60K/year chef who does cool chicken wings or something. What about a team of four chefs led by a $150K/year head chef that prepares specific dishes for each player? Deliver food to your home that you just need to heat up? Who work year-round with the team, including feeding people whenever they are in Toronto in the offseason? Fly to Vegas and feed them during summer camp? All for free with no effort, so the default choice is the healthiest one.

Party planning? There's a big difference between a list of 'here are cool places to check out' and having a team of three people, whose only job is helping you have a fun time. Are you the only player who wants to see great jazz in Oklahoma? No problem, one of the social team will go with you after the game ... and because this is all they have to do, maybe they'll arrange a private concert at 4:00 pm because the band wants to chill with an NBA player, and you can sleep after the game. Your wife want to celebrate the big win with you at a club? No problem, one of the social team will take the kids home and look after them until you come back (in fairness, I think the club is already doing some family stuff - I don't know what their budget is, and how many people they have).

What if you knew as a player that any time you were in Toronto (or wherever the chef and party planning team were - e.g., summer league) you had amazing food, and a guaranteed fun time happening for you and your family? Wouldn't you spend a bit more time here, chilling with your teammates, and having everything you needed to do as a player made really simple for you?

P.S. I think we're a little too used to thinking of the LeBron Jameses of this world, who earn enough to afford their own posse, personal trainer, personal chef, etc. What if you're a Bismack Biyombo, a Bruno or a TRoss? You can't afford all these things while saving for your post-NBA life. If the club offered them to you, it would be one amazing perk.
