  • Is this acceptable behaviour from the head of the UN Human Rights Council?

According to state-run Makkah Newspaper in Saudi Arabia, the wealthy Gulf-nation is threatening its citizens with the death penalty for spreading rumors about the government on social media.

An anonymous source within the Ministry of Justice stated only the worst “rumour-mongers” will be sentenced to death, while lesser offenders of the new policy will be disciplined with flogging, imprisonment, travel bans, house arrest, fines and social media bans.

Oh come now...that is maybe conflating it's political/security council efforts with their specialized agencies which do a lot of very positive and helpful activities and aid providing to poor/developing countries in desperate need of. Some examples:

            FAO
            UNICEF
            International Develop. agency
            WHO
            etc.

Since it is the member countries that support and run the institution there is of course a type of mission-creep of individual states pushing individual agendas. On balance though the institutions affiliated above do a lot of good globally for those who need it most. The political arm no doubt needs reform.

              10. WHAT HAPPENS IN THE KINGDOM, STAYS IN THE KINGDOM

The Saudi Arabian authorities continue to deny access to independent human rights organizations like Amnesty International, and they have been known to take punitive action, including through the courts, against activists and family members of victims who contact us.

The head of the UN Council of Human Rights people!

US ally Saudi Arabia argues that death sentences are carried out in line with Sharia and with the strictest fair trial standards and safeguards in place. Here are 10 sobering facts from Amnesty International’s research:
That was 10....click for the other 9.

Don't forget the west is all about protecting human rights with their middle eastern intervention. Saudi Arabia bombing is on the to-do list.

                      Are you serious?

(This may seem an insincere question ... and I don't really doubt your sincerity. But this is so far from my understanding of what's going on that I felt it necessary to ask)

                        No. Not serious. At all.

                        Should have pinked it.

Alliance with Saudi Arabia is likely #1 on the all-time hypocrisy list.
