  • Fun with Raptors Play calling stats

From NBA.com, I've arranged in terms of how often we are using plays, how many points we score per possession using that play, then how effective each play is in terms of scoring frequency (number of times the play generates at least a point). I'm using both PPP and Scoring % because PPP captures the benefit of 3 pointers and Scoring % captures free throw makes.

    % of all possessions
Pick and roll ball handler keeps 19.4
    Spot up 18.7
    Transition 12
    Isolation 8.7
    Post up 7.7
    Off screen 7.3
    Cuts 6.9
Pick and roll to roll man 5.8
    Other 5.8
    Putback 5.5
    Hand offs 2.3

    Points per possession
Pick and roll ball handler keeps 0.89
    Spot up 0.91
    Transition 1.18
    Isolation 0.87
    Post up 0.83
    Off screen 0.82
    Cuts 1.27
Pick and roll to roll man 0.98
    Other 0.57
    Putback 0.92
    Hand offs 1.09

    Scoring Frequency (%)
Pick and roll ball handler keeps 42.6
    Spot up 35.3
    Transition 54.4
    Isolation 45.6
    Post up 44.2
    Off screen 35.3
    Cuts 64
Pick and roll to roll man 47.4
    Other 33.1
    Putback 47.7
    Hand offs 50

My biggest take away from this is that out number 1 play call (ball handler keeps on pick and roll) has a very low PPP and a fairly low scoring rate. Alternatively, when the roll man finishes the play, we do much better. For as much as we run the pick an roll and as effective as we are when the roll man finishes the play, it's odd that we so rarely go to the roll man.

Our spot up shooting makes up a large portion of our shots but is actually low relative to the rest of the league. We also score at a much lower rate.

I was surprised to see how good we are in transition. That PPP mark and scoring % is good for 4th in the league. We need to run more.

Iso plays are actually surprisingly effective for us because of the free throws they generate. 20% of the time we are being fouled during iso plays, by far the most in the league. So even though we shoot an atrocious 36% on iso's, we make it up at the line. This is what killed us in the play offs, when we let the

For cuts plays, Biyombo is actually the team leader so it may be we are running fewer because of concerns about him finishing. He's actually been not bad, with a 1.07 PPP, but that is still well below the league average. JV is second and has a 1.38 which is excellent.

We run the lowest % of hand offs in the league despite having the second best PPP on those plays. Lowry, Derozan and Ross in particular have been monsters in those plays, with 1.22, 1.00, and 1.43 PPP respectively. Small sample though.

One thing to note on the PPP stat is that is doesn't seem to take into account Free throws. As a result of this, according to the above stats we would have an offensive rating of 93.7 instead of our real rating of 104.1.

Kind of useless without free throws...

The relying on FTs, especially with regards to DeMar, scares me in the playoffs. Defenses tighten up, whistles sometimes get hard to find. He's just not efficient if he doesn't get to the line.

Scoring frequency captures free throws made.

Uhh, so does PPP - it captures free throws as well.

Are you sure, looking at how the numbers break down it doesn't seem too.

Never mind my bad, probably only needed ppp.
