I don't find TMZ a particularly reliable source. Until I see proof that the NFL saw the video before, I tend to believe the league on this one.
What about all of this makes you think TMZ has anything to lie about? They may be sleezy, but they're pretty much always right on this shit ...

    • Goodell told CBS News, he knew a tape existed and went to law enforcement and asked for a copy but the request was rejected.

So why didn't he then simply go to directly to the source -- the Revel Casino?

Goodell said, "I don't know how TMZ or any other website gets their info. We are particularly reliant on law enforcement, that's the most reliable, the most credible. We don't seek to get that information from sources who are not credible."

THIS MAKES NO SENSE. The police got the tape from the casino, so the police video CANNOT be more credible than the source.

TMZ Sports broke the story ... casino employees told us if the NFL would have requested the video they would have gladly provided it, but no one asked.

It is true ... the Grand Jury was evaluating the case and we're told there's no way authorities would give up evidence in a pending case. But that doesn't mean the NFL -- a private organization -- couldn't approach the casino directly ... which would not impede the investigation in any way.

To be clear, I'm not doubting any of the video content or anything but TMZ is 100% about headlines. For an incident that occurred in February I find it very odd that the video doesn't "leak" until after the NFL season started, especially one that they are claiming is so easily accessible. TMZ knows that opening weekend is the best time in the NFL hype machine to jump in with this story.

The NFL had no reason to hide this or to protect Ray Rice (that is the NFLPA's job). I think that we can all agree that the #1 priority for the NFL is protecting the NFL. I don't believe that they are naive enough to think that a video would exist and never leak, so why would they purposely risk the NFL brand by doing what TMZ is suggesting?

Also, the NFL is an employer - so going through proper legal channels is the legit action. How would you like it if your employer went directly to a source to get dirt on you? It's ultimately the same thing. If a company is concerned about a legal matter, then they go through the police; not put on a Dick Tracy hat and start snooping around. TMZ is a group of reporters, so snooping around is basically all they do.

Plus since the timeline of this started months ago, the legal process has concluded. There would be no reason for the NFL to suspect that law enforcement was holding anything back.

TMZ is looking for "clicks" and throwing suspicion on the NFL on opening weekend is a pretty darn good way to generate traffic for their site. Releasing the video is one thing, but that wouldn't generate as much interest as a proposed cover-up by the league.

That's why I think TMZ is BS'ing the NFL's knowledge of this video.

No dispute about TMZ being a site dealing in sleaze and sensationalism....but you must know that 3 of the more well connected reporters of all things NFL reported during the summer that well placed sources told them that the NFL had viewed the inside tape. They are, Peter King, Adam Schefter & Chris Mortensen. The NFL did not dispute this at the time. Why? Because they wanted it out the way it was. Rationale? They included all aspects of evidence before making judgement on RR.

I hear these reporters are now pissed. They were in effect thrown under the bus by the now denial. Would they reveal their sources? Dont hold your breath. This is just an unraveling of the arrogance of a very powerful org. caught up in a coverup. Ironic that a sleaze org. like TMZ is doing the poking and not the so called respected reporters.

Wonder if these sparks also wrote to the Atlantic City/New Jersey prosecutor who actually viewed all of the evidence, got a grand jury indictment and then let RR in effect walk without a trial or any consequence. He did not need Ms. Palmer's testimony for a conviction....he had the video! The criminal justice system is a head shaker sometimes....guys in prison for long sentences for simple possession and then we have a prosecutor who probably got an autograph and handshake to let RR go. But will congress really get involved in something they have jurisdiction over?

Of course semantics and obsfucation of how Goodell framed his answers will continue.

                As always...its the coverup.

                  • I just don't see any motivation for the NFL to cover anything up. It doesn't make sense to lie about it because only the lie would reflect badly on the NFL directly (nobody overly cares what a single player does - no matter how awful - in the grand scheme of things).

I see don't see a benefit to lying and the NFL isn't dumb enough to risk the brand without good reason.

I don't think they understood how much of a reaction they would get with the original ruling. After they got the initial response from the public, they've been backpedaling.

PR experts cannot wash things like this away anymore.

I think they knew the initial 2 game ban would cause waves; hence they immediately wrote new domestic violence policy giving them stronger ground for future incidents. If they had the policy in place, then there wouldn't have been much backlash (if any). So clearly the NFL knew and acted accordingly to ensure that they would be able to be harsher in the future.

                          • Adrian Peterson indicted in son's child abuse case. Fun day for NFL.

he charged conduct involves using a switch to spank his son."

"This indictment follows Adrian's full cooperation with authorities who have been looking into this matter. Adrian is a loving father who used his judgement as a parent to discipline his son."

"He used the same kind of discipline with his child that he experienced as a child growing up in East Texas. Adrian has never hidden from what happened."

"He has cooperated fully with authorities and voluntarily testified before the grand jury for several hours."

"Adrian will address the charges with the same respect and responsiveness he has brought to this inquiry from its beginning. It is important to remember that Adrian never intended to harm his son and deeply regrets the unintentional injury."
