  • Why did we take the Banks contract AND give Miami our 1st round pick ?

Am I missing something or have read wikipedia wrong lol... but in the J.O. trade, we traded J.O. AND a 1st round pick for Marion and Banks...

now Banks' contract is what Riley was desperate to get rid of as it goes past the 2010 free agent summer... which would have eaten up close to 5 million of their salary cap... knowing this, why did we do them a favour by taking the Marcus Banks contract AND we gave them our 1st round pick ?

did BC just get robbed ?

ironically enough, we traded for Marion to keep Bosh happy so that he wouldnt just leave,, and took the Banks contract not knowing something very important. By taking the Banks contract it allowed Miami to clear enough cap space and sign ... yup you guessed it CHRIS BOSH !!

just to add to this... did Pat Riley know that by taking Bosh from Toronto, it would leave the Raps with a very weak team, would would most likely end up in the lottery...

So not only did we take the contract that allowed them to take away our star player, but we are now giving them a lottery pick.

Wrong. By taking Banks, it allowed Miami to clear enough cap space to potentially sign LBJ... or Mike Miller. Chris Bosh + Wade would have fit with or without Banks, and you can be sure if Toronto didn't take Banks from Miami, OKC would probably have been just as willing to take Banks' expiring contract and the 18th pick from Miami in return for their 2nd rounder.

Wow dude. You need to get your facts straight. The pick is lottery protected til mid-way through the decade.

Thank Bosh! He had this planned since the Olympics.

do you know exactly how long it's protected ?

is it 5 years from the trade ? or is it 2015...what is it ?

exactly OKC wold take Miami's 18th and give them back a second rounder.... not OKC would take banks and give miami their first rounder...

                Lottery protected in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.

                Unprotected in 2015.

If Riley planned it so he could get a lottery pick out of us how many years later, more power to him.

                    it's still a 1st round pick right ?

and right now it's protected... but who knows in 2015 if we make the playoffs... it could be a lottery pick.

The idea was that BC wanted to act last summer in order to have at least a chance to prove Bosh that Raptors is on the right direction, hence BC had to get rid of JO $20mil contract which cost him a first round pick + taking Banks contract. Now, the plan could have worked if BC wouldn't put his trust in Turk. Anyway, BC has a history of trading picks away, he trade one to take JO and another one to get rid of JO.

you said OKC would be willing to take banks and a 1st round pick for a second rounder...

the raps took Banks and gave up a 1st rounder...

okc would be taking banks and GETTING a 1st rounder
raps taking banks and GIVING AWAY a 1st rounder

You can go back and nitpick this trade and say Riley set up Colangelo and blah blah blah. But no one knows what Miami would have done last year with the cap space they got from Shawn Marion's expiring contract had they kept him.

As for why the Raptors took back Marcus Banks in the trade, he was cap ballast. Jermaine O'Neal was making something like $22M last year while Marion's salary was $17M. Banks was thrown in the make the trade work under salary cap restrictions

NO it was specifically done to get rid of Banks... Miami had planned to free up as much cap space as possible for July 1st 2010.... They couldnt care less how the season went cuz they knew they werent gona win anything anyway.

my point is WHY did we have to throw in a 1st round pick in that trade ?

Marion had 1 less yr on his contract and 2 mill. I believe. That would be for a total savings of about 23 mill. (approx).
