You're probably confused a little by the fact that most player retirements are typically (and quietly) accompanied by contract buyouts.Any money paid to a player is included in team salary, even if the player is no longer playing or has retired.
There is one exception whereby a player can continue to receive his salary, but the salary is excluded from team salary. This is when a player suffers a career-ending injury or illness. The team must waive the player, and can apply for this salary exclusion on the one-year anniversary of the last game in which the player played1. Only the player's team at the time the injury or illness was discovered (or reasonably should have been discovered) can apply for this salary exclusion.
The determination as to whether an injury or illness is career ending is made by a physician jointly selected by the league and players association. The determination is based on whether the injury or illness will prevent the player from playing for the remainder of his career, or if it is severe enough that continuing to play constitutes a medically unacceptable risk.
I still cannot believe that we got 3(!) draft picks for Andrea Bargnani.
So basically what this means is that Bargnani actually did in fact have value.
Seems like he is!
Next stop...Toronto!— Steve Novak (@stevenovak16) July 1, 2013
Do you guys want Novak to stay or should the Raps flip him?
guy shoots the god damn lights out on corner threes. INVALUABLE.
Imagine if we picked up Kyle Korver and JJ Reddick as well...we wouldn't even need to play defense
we don't need fields ne more. trade his ass please.
At this rate, Demar will lose his job not even to his own fault.
I'm fine with having Novak especially since he gives us some very much needed 3 point shooting.
nice to see one of their players is happy to come here. haha. good shooter who hopefully they don't try to turn into a point forward, kapono cough cough
For The Win
So the three picks are:
1. The worse of New York's or Denver's 2016 first round picks.
2. New York's 2017 second rounder, and
3. Oklahoma City's 2014 second rounder.
That third one is actually pretty sweet given how rich the 2014 draft class is. A 55th pick in the 2014 draft is like a #35-40 pick in any other.
Flip him with DeRizen for Bledsoe and Butler
Steve Novak is that specialist 3pt shooter we needed! Compliments our team well, add to that 3 draft picks, and less salary commitments and it looks to me like MU cut our losses very well with Bargnani!
The Baltic Beast is unstoppable!
Okay, if you wanted to know if the Bargnani trade is evidence for the tank or evidence for the rebuild, see Woj, who tells us that Golden State was trying to package David Lee for Bargs. Maybe they were asking too much, but unless they wanted Jonas along with Bargs I think the Lee trade is just straight-up better. Bargs + TRoss for Lee would definitely be worth considering, for example.
I think this is now a small bit of evidence for the tank theory.
