OK, the thread is asking what the raps need to improve the most, not want you guys want for the raps to get.
Its asking for NEED, not WANT.
The raps are last in blocks per game and 7th in blocks against. i think that pretty much says what this team needs. i mean if you guys cant hear that this team is screaming for a dominant center, clearly you guys are deaf.
scoring is pretty much covered. assists is good enough. rebounding is getting there. blocks, nowhere near.

Also, is the lack of blocks the new knock on Bargnani after getting some rebounds of late?

Irving is also having a bad day with 3mins to go in the 1st.

ed davis is a good shotblocker, but i think the raps have more plans than him just being a defensive specialist.

I think what is more important is having bigs that can and not necessarily in this order
1. Alter shots
2. Rebound
3. Defend
4. Get into the passing lane effectively with their hands
5. Rotate effectively to give good weak side help
6. Keep the guy they are defending off of their sweet spots which generally lowers his/her FG%
7. Box out effectively
I would rather have a big who is able to take two or three charges a game and do all of the above than someone who can do all of the above and block 2 - 3 shots a game but never or rarely takes a charge.
Shot blockers are notorious for getting into foul trouble and winding up in the popcorn machine with salt and butter all over them when they try and guard someone who is a skilled offensive player.Avatar: Riverboat Coffee House 134 Yorkville Ave. billboard of upcoming entertainers - Circa 1960s

You don't see Kobe guarding Jefferson but of those players mentioned who play same position, yes they do guard one another when it matters.
Your original post said the Raptors needed shot blockers - they have Bargnani who is good for one a game, Johnson, Davis who should average closer to 2-2.5, and Alabi a project who's shotblocking is his specialty. IMO they need a great two way wing player who can score and defend - enter Terrence Jones (draft) or Jeff Green (RFA) would be my preference- "Hey, BC! You listening?"
The great players in the league play on both sides of the ball and because one is asked to score doesn't mean they can't play D or block shots.

The Raptors aren't building for next year, they're building for three or four years into the future where the current group of young guys are entering their prime. No point in focusing on picking up skill-specific players like shot-blockers or deep shooters or even situational defenders right now. Raptors need to use all non-long-term assets available to move up in the draft and get the most talented, high-upside wing or guard that they can, as those will be the hardest things to acquire.

1) Pass First PG
2) Dominate Physical Rebounding Center to move AB to PF.
3) Great Rebounding and Defensive SF
Move Weems, Johnson to te bench where the belong. Start Davis in bench for now as well till he matures.
If BC plays his cards right, by using TPE and Peja and Evans expiring contracts and also 2 first round draft picks, all of the 3 major needs can be addressed this summer BUT is BC going to pull it off ??

AB plays outside and a great big body like Roy Hibert type player can be a great pice to play along with him.

I think that we are pretty much covered at PG position (bayless, barbosa, calderon) we are ok at the wings (derozan, weems, barbosa, wright, kleiza) we are ok at the PF position (Ed davis, kleiza, bargnani, johnson, dorsey) the only position that we are weak in is a true center the only center this team has is bargnani (who is arguably a 4). So if BC goes out there to get anything it should be ATLEAST a back up center."Defense wins championships."

We really need a Dwight Howard type center for fear of turning I to Atlanta hawks.Last edited by DoNDaDDa; Sun Dec 5, 2010, 12:07 AM.

The Raptors could definitely use a C, there are a few option we could look at this summer:
1.) Marc Gasol, physical, rebounds, can score (ideal for Raps but its unlikely memphis will let him go.
2.) Sammy Dalembert, long, rebound+block machine, could shore up our interior defense,
and he's Canadian.
