If the Raps are to be involved, it is likely as a 3rd team to help facilitate a deal between Denver and one of NY or NJ.

IMO though, Anthony is only going to sign the 3yr/65mil extension if it is a trade to the Knicks. These young guys entering their prime are going to get the same amount of money anywhere in the league, they want to win. So Anthony may get traded elsewhere, but he will be a Knick next season.
That is where the Nuggets do actually have a bit of leverage. The 3yr/$65M extension will not be possible if he opts out to become a free agent and most likely it will not be possible to sign a deal as rich as this with the new CBA. If Anthony does not sign that deal before the trade deadline, he may very well be looking at losing millions of dollars in salary over the next 3 years.

There is no question he can go to the Knicks this summer for next season if he wants.

The question is how much is he willing to risk in lost salary to do so.

The Raps involvement is almost 100% as a facilitator using the TPE. According to ESPN's Chris Broussard, the Cavs were originally included in the deal by using the Lebron TPE to try to get one or two of the Nets 1st round picks + expiring contract (Troy Murphy). The Nets would get the TPE. That fell through, but seeing as the Raps have an equally large TPE for Bosh, it makes sense the Ujiri would have contacted his ex-boss, BC about the exact same thing.

To me, this must mean that Melo won't sign with NJ as has been widely reported. If I'm BC, I take on Murphy for 2 first round picks. Combine this with Toronto's other 2 picks in '11 draft and subsequent cap room (around $13M on old CBA) that leaves plenty of flexibility for adding young talent if it means taking on a bad contract. As of now, TOR would have the 6th or 7th pick in the draft.

Our TPE is a little more than $2 million less than Cleveland.

My take on this is that Melo will be traded to a team willing to rent him and then become a free agent to resign with NYK. This will be Heatles 2 with a deeper bench. The East is about to get uglier especially for the Raps. We are a true center and pg away from making the playoffs only to be bounced by either Miami or the Knick in the first round but that's ok until we get better...

Where did you get that info from? Shamsports has them listed at $14.5M - exactly the same for Bosh & Lebron.

We used our TPE in the Bayless deal.

It was $14.5M but the Peja/Bayless trade was actually 2 transactions. Bayless and his $2.3M salary was acquired for a piece of the TPE. The TPE remaining is now $12.2M.

One source close to the talks said Sunday afternoon that the deal could be clinched if the Nets can find a fourth team willing to absorb Johan Petro's salary.
The Nets and Nuggets, meanwhile, have not stopped looking for other teams beyond Detroit that would be interested in joining the trade, since Denver does not have a strong need for Harris with young guard Ty Lawson on the roster. New Jersey and Denver have likewise continued to discuss trade possibilities with the Nuggets that don't involve any other teams.
This is from Chris Broussard at ESPN.com.
So my question is, you think Devin Harris (and Petro to a lesser extent?) is someone BC is interested in? Are you guys?
This might be the only way we can get involved at this point if you read the latest on the trade with DEN, NJ and DET.

(note: I had this in the Let's NBA forum and brought it here)

This is the latest rumoured trade for Carmelo Anthony.

                        http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMa...radeId=2vooqd7

                        Just a small exchange.

From stuff I've read, DET does not want to add Petro and now seeing DEN does not want Harris, I would get invovled with the TPE.

IMO a 7-footer making only $3.25M a season would be nice to have - it is not like the guy could not get moved again especially to a team needing size heading in to the playoffs for a late first round pick (Orlando?).

Also, IMO, Harris would have value around the league. Surely he could fetch an expiring and a decent draft pick (Portland, Sacramento?).

*EDIT* NJ has 5 first round draft picks over the next 2 years. Giving it a little thought Harris will be easy to flip for DEN so they probably take him on even though they may not 'need' him for the same reasons the Raptors would take him on. DEN is reportedly getting 2 picks which I would guess are NJ's 1st round pick this year and GSW's 1st round pick next year. If I am BC I offer to take on Petro using the TPE to get back the 2011 2nd rounder DET has from Delfino trade and the Lakers 1st round pick from NJ. Teams typically spend up to $3M for a draft pick - 2 more seasons of Petro at $3.25M each is about the same. Also Petro might be able to be traded before the deadline as well. The idea of helping an Atlantic division rival sucks but it is obvious Melo ends up in NJ or NYK - NJ is definitely the lesser of 2 evils.

                        Just some thoughts.

From what I read and understand, the deal to the Nets would only happen at the trade deadline. This is because Denver wants the Nets 1st round pick to be as high as possible. If the deal went down today, the Nets would make the playoffs.

Multiple sources with knowledge of the talks expressed optimism Sunday that a three-team deal involving the Pistons featuring at least 15 players -- with Rip Hamilton and Chauncey Billups winding up in New Jersey with Anthony -- could be completed in the next day or two.

The good thing if the Melo trade is done in the next day or two then it will open the floodgates of other moves. It seems like everyone is waiting for the Melo-drama to end before anyone else shows their cards.
