  • Agreed, nice find. Would love to be seeing JJ pick up another aspect to his game. Currently with no competition at his position it will be his chance to show he can play at a high level.

    • I am much more on the JJ bandwagon than off it. I recall many more games last year where he was the one bright spot than the reverse. He was a bit inconsistent, but I think he was also finding his way and trying to figure out what he could do/get away with and what he couldn't under Triano's system.

      • Artest was one of my favorite players before the brawl. His defense is undeniable, if JJ got some tips from him then fantastic

I actually gained more respect for Artest AFTER the brawl, lol. If you're gonna chuck a full beer at me, I don't give a sh*t if you're a paying customer or not....you're gonna get a beatdown.

          • I also see JJ as an exciting piece moving forward. If he adds a more reliable jumper, added to his skills at passing and handling the ball, athleticism to D-Up, and rebounding for a SF - I'm good with him.

That would really leave a PG for the future, and depth especially at the wings) as the only real needs on our future roster.

            • Much better value than that Heat 1st round pick.

                • Ok, so I just merged all the JJ threads into one. It's interesting looking back at some of the beginning comments.

                  • Thanks for merging them. Pretty interesting read. Also, the Bulls flipped the pick they got from us for Nikola Mirotic -- who they're not bringing over the the league for at least 2 seasons. The actual pick was Norris Cole - a very small pg who probably would have been a 2nd rounder in a deeper draft. Yes, San Antonio did pick Cory Joseph the next pick. But, 1/ it's the Spurs, 2/ no guarantees BCo makes that pic even if he has him on is board. (We all know some of the hometown player stress fluff he's said in the past.)

All that to say -- haters, compare JJ to Norris Cole. Is he better, or worse? Was the trade a good idea when comparing the 2?

Also, really cool to hear he was training with Metta World Peace.

Mirotic is a great talent but he is about 4 years away from playing in the NBA - at least that is what they said at the draft.

Cory Joseph had a lot of people scratching their head (forget the fact he is Canadian). Many were surprised he even declared for the draft and then many more were surprised he went first round. With the benefit of hindsight it is clear he did the right thing - especially with Kabongo now at Texas.

Both Mirotic and Joseph were two of my sleepers of the draft. I don't think Mirotic takes 4 years to come over. I'm guessing more like 2.

One of the reasons I felt Joseph was a sleeper was because he never really got a chance to play his natural position at Texas.

After less than 10 minutes of the game, Nikola Mirotic has scored already 19pts (out of 29 scored by Real Madrid): UNSTOPPABLE!

                          • James Johnson: matchup defender

Hey, this is a thread I'm starting thinking about nightmare matchups that usually plague us, and the intrigue of Johnson as a defensive gamer. With Dallas coming up, I'm not going to dwell on the obvious. I imagine Bargnani, Amir and Ed will guard Dirk for most or all of the game. I did remember that they also acquired Odom, who always is a matchup nightmare, even against us usually going back to the Bosh days. Our bigs can never guard him from the perimeter, few people have guys who can. BUT! James Johnson is long, athletic, recovers well and might be strong enough to guard a non-traditional big like Odom. Could he neutralize a guy like Odom? Especially if they're both coming in off the bench? We clearly have no one else who matches up very well against him. It's exactly the type of matchup that Amir tends to get silly fouls like reaching in. Ed is definitely not ideal as he's more of a post player. Bargnani might get minutes against him, but there's no way he can go against him for a lot of the game.

Anyway, thoughts? And also, thoughts of any other players that make you wonder about James' defensive potential? Obviously we want him to guard 3s....but the strength of a guy his size is the potential to use him on some 4s, maybe some 2s occasionally...It would be nice if he could become a 3 position defender.

I also want to emphasize I'm not saying he's a savior or anything, and I'm not going to discuss his very flawed offensive game. This is just about his potential as a defensive specialist capable of matching up against a variety of guys.

                            • I love James Johnsons game. He has hustle, is aggressive on defence, and he improves his game in the right spots.

Lamar Odom is not that bigger then James Johnson in terms of height, and if the statistics are right that I am viewing, he actually has close to 20 pounds on Lamar Odom. I would love to see James Johnson cause some problems for Odom and Marion.

I think he could guard an Odom, and if he can't, it does not matter, cause it makes Johnson a better player in the end.

                              • Interesting thread, JJ has shown he has the hops and speed to be a great help defender. How would he do one on one against different players isn't something I have thought about. He is most impressive when he comes out of nowhere to swat away a shot from someone who has slipped their defender. Or makes a steal one somebody driving through the paint. He is usually matchup up against 3's and my impression is he does a good job on his man.
