  • Rating raptor players

Suppose we just subjectively rated players an a 1 to 10 scale based on how good they are overall this year: how much they help their team win. the scale might look something like this:

10 mvp candidates -- Lebron, Nowitsky, Howard, etc.
9 – perennial all-stars -- Paul Pierce, Rajon Rondo, Amare Stoudemire
    8 – occasional all-stars -- Tony Parker, Josh Smith
7 – Fans think they should be all-stars -- Marc Gasol, Stephen Curry
    6 – Average starter
5 – weak starter, good bench guy
    4 – average bench guy
    3 – weak bench guy
2 – end of bench guy
    1 – 10 day contract

So where would we rate the Raptors players? Here's my list -- even if you dont agree with it, I doubt there's much room for more than a point or two of argument in either direction.
    Amir Johnson: 6 or 7
    Bargnani: 6 or 7
Calderon: 6. He was a 7 in his best year.
    Barbosa: 6
    Kleiza 5 or 6
    Ed Davis: 5
    DeMar DeRozan: 5
    Reggie: 4 or 5
    James Johnson: 4 or 5
    Julian wright: 4 or 5
    Joey Dorsey: 4
    Sonny weems: 4
    Bayless: 3 or 4
    Alexis Ajinca: 3

So, yeah, not that much talent on the team. At least most of them have room for improvement...

        Wright: 2

As of right now we have one player who is capable of starting most games on an average team. Pretty sad.

Thanks god your not the raptors talent evaluator. You would be laughed at histerically. I can imagine your recommendations to the gm.. well I have conculded that Ed Davis is 4 times better than Bargnani while Ajinca is 3 times better therefore i recommend you trade Bargnani. GM response = Quick glance at recommendation + quick glance up at you + laugh histerically = your fired.

the whole point was to rate them right now, not in the future. Personally, I can't see the future. Yeah, DeMar or ed might be 8's some day. Maybe, maybe not: but the fact they are 5's right now helps explain why the Raptors are a 20 win team.

Also, rating Bargnani as deserving to be in the D-League or the end of the bench suggests you might not be very good at evaluating NBA talent.

Fair enough. I still think he's an 8, tho. He's really, really good, IMHO. Maybe that makes him a 7, since apparently I'm a fan and I think he should be an all-star.

Macc: I don't think we can say DeRozan is an average starter. He's such a bad defender right now, and his offense is just ok. All the stats suggest he is not helping the team much atm.

The better Ranking would be against the other players in the NBA in their position.

Jose : Among the PG, he is around 8 ( There are 8 better PGs in the league)
DD: Among Shooting Guards around 12 ( There are 12 better shooting guards in the league)
Amir: 20 Among the PFs ( There are 20 better PFs in the league than Amir)
James Johnso: 20 among SFs ( There are 20 better SFs in this league)
AB: 5 Among centers ( There are only 5 better centers in this league).

Yeah but his offence alone is enough for him to be a starter on an average team (Portland, New Orleans). His defence + some areas of offence (ball-handling, 3pt shot) is why he's not a 7. I'd say he's more of a 5.5 to be honest.

I'd rather have a guy who's skinny as a twig but actually tries on defence and gets a few boards and blocks rather than a retarded italian bigman who can barley defend or grab a single rebound a game.

                            I'll play along...

                            Amir Johnson: 6
                            Calderon: 6
                            Bargnani: 5 (He's an 8 on offense and a 2 on defense, so that equals a 5)
                            Barbosa: 5
                            DeRozan: 5
                            Ed Davis: 5
                            Reggie: 4
                            James Johnson: 4
                            Bayless: 3
                            Weems: 3
                            Kleiza: 3
                            Dorsey: 2
                            Wright: 2
                            Ajinca: 2

That's an average rating of 3.9, and the starting unit averages 5.2, which pretty much explains the 20 win total.

But if it was done on potential, it would be much better!
