  • Garbajosa

So I wasn't around when Garbajosa was on the team. What happened? I hear so much about him along the lines of "he was the glue that kept the team together" but he hasn't been here for a while. Why did he leave? What injury did he have? If anyone has the footage of the injury I'd like to see it.

He injured his knee and, if my memory serves me right, he violated his contract with the Raptors by playing for Spain when they told him to sit out and heal up.

He was a scrappy hustle guy who busted up his ankle pretty badly. He had to be stretchered off the floor. That was at the end of '06-'07. He was slated to come back the next season, but his ankle wasn't coming along the way he expected and he had to have surgery again in December of '07.

He decided to play for Spain's Olympic team in 2008, after sitting out over a year of his NBA contract (while being paid). The Raptors didn't want him to play for Spain due to his long-time ankle issues. As a result, they bought out his contract. He went back to Europe full-time after that.

He was not a great player by any stretch. He was a nice hustle guy who brought energy and defense to the team (something that was in VERY short supply then, and still is) but in the end he was still a bench guy, nothing more. It was sad to see him suffer that injury though. I'm sure there's video out there, but I dunno where.

        shit man.

There is an article about Garbo's injury. He was one hell of a player for the Raptors and it's a damn shame that things didn't work out differently.

He was definitely a great off-the-bench player. Not only did he bring hustle, but he was smart on the D and O as well. Good passing ability. Consistent 3 point threat. Wish we had a player like that now. I'd liken him to James Johnson actually, except Johnson doesn't have the jump shot yet.

Bargs and Garbo both made the rookie challenge at allstar weekend and they both made the all rookie first team.

The best thing about Garbo is that he was always where he was suppose to be, especially on the defensive end of the floor. Despite his average foot speed, he was a good man defender because he positioned himself well and used the angles to his advantage. As a help defender his rotations were crisp and he was always in the right position. On offense his game was pretty simple. He would make open shots, and made the right pass. The ball never stuck to his hands.

He was a soft euro. We don't need euros on this team.

He blew his ankle out really bad. He rehabbed it. During the summer he wanted to play for Spain at the Olympics but Raptors' doctors were not willing to clear him to play even though Spain's doctors did clear him. He and his agent put major pressure on Colangelo to let him go. Colangelo took the risk to save the relationship knowing full well that the Raptors' doctors were suggesting Jorge could do more damage playing on it. Jorge did do more damage to it during his play. Then the NBA season came. He was slowed during training camp to the point where Sam Mitchell took him out of the starting lineup. His poor play eventually led to him being bench. He started complaining publicly about not getting to play. Raptors' brass took the stance that he wasn't !00%. They were right. Jorge never was a fast guy but he viably had lost a step and it appear as though it was due to the injury. One thing led to another and he was out of Toronto and out of the NBA.

i can't believe no one mentioned the greatest thing about Garbo. His nickname was "The Pornstar" because he did a little bit of everything.
