Dana White said after the fight, that any rematch would likely go down as the UFCs highest grossing fight.

Pretty sure the previous high was Couture vs. Lidell #3? Could be way wrong on that.

      • Ya, I think you're wrong on that. At least, it would seem that way.

Anyway, the most interesting part of Silva messing up was that all the champs and the UFC in general lost a bunch of potential money. Certainly, no one can be all that happy at Silva..

        • Vitor wanted to cut in line ahead of the rematch, pfff in his dreams.

          Talk about delusional.

I'm pretty sure the highest grossing card was UFC 100... i think it did something ridiculous, like 1.5 million buyrates... and the card was STACKED.. Lesnar vs Mir, GSP vs Thiago Alves, Hendo vs Bisping... it also featured a little known fighter on the prelims called Jonny Bones Jones.

The Weidman - Silva rematch MAY come close to it... weidman-silva 1 has gotten a huge amount of major media coverage... but it's tough to compete with the ppv buys juggernaut that is Brock Lesnar..

Only 2 fights on the card so far.. Weiman - Silva 2, and Tate - Rousey 2... but both are HUGE

lol... all it takes is the champ to refuse fighting in Brazil... since Vitor isn't allowed to fight anywhere else

                • Silva clowned, and got knocked out. Anyone disagreeing needs to try a bit harder to be honest with themselves. Silve lost that fight by acting like a fool. Period.

Loving the typical GSP bashing that goes on here...as Chael Sonnen pointed out, you need to remove the idea of the "fight" and realize that you are watching a "competition". UFC/MMA supporters need to be careful about how hypocritical they can get. You don't even HAVE the UFC without the sanctions they had to get, ruling that this is a "sport". Fighting is illegal. So, if by definition, you want to set up a company based upon the premise that you are providing sports entertainment. You have designated rules, rules that each competitor has to follow, if they do and are successful in beating the opponent due to stoppage, or on points, then they are awarded the win. Its what every MMA athlete has agreed to in order to make the money they make. Whining about ANYTHING after the point is weak as everyone knows the minute an anti-MMA media guy says a word they all scream about martial arts, respect and sportsmanship.

This brings me straight to GSP. He has more to lose than the potential champs he fights night in, and night out. NONE of the guys he has fought in the UFC have been better. He got caught with a lucky punch once, and he tapped once when he was winning and really it was a panic move, but off the record, everyone knew he was the stronger fighter to that point. NOBODY can beat his game. They can hit him, they can submit him, and they cannot stop him from doing what he want to do. Silva has been good, hell yes, but he also has looked very normal against guy who come in the ring and fight a smart and honest fight. The idiots he battles that go in and try to swing it out with him....well those are easy fights for him.

I don't mind people saying Andrson Silva is the greatest...he may well be. What bothers me is the absolute NONSENSE they say about St. Pierre. GSP is absolutely dominant at his weight. NOBODY can beat him. He is in arguably the strongest (and has been across all fights companies for years) the toughest and most competitive weight class, where fighters actually DO have to come up the ranks and prove the deserve a shot, unlike the middleweight cat where guys get a couple good win and boom they are in the main event. You can argue it if you'd like, but I am not biting. Welter weight, and even lightweight are by far the most competitive, it numbers and averages and provable. And still, GSP stands on top, with NONE of the potential challengers ALL of which provide a very high level and threat, having any semblance of an idea about how to beat him. So, lets tone down the anti GSP ranting shall we, its ridiculous and based upon barbaric and meatheaded ideals.

Lastly. Overeem fight was GREAT, mostly because I dislike Overeem. hahaha

That's a bit of a dismissive statement... Silva clowns around with a lot of guys, and still wins... I'm a HUGE Silva mark, but the truth is he lost because Weidman was a better fighter that night.. he did what nobody else could, he kept his cool, kept patient, didn't fall for Silva's tricks, and capitalized with a beautiful and unexpected combo... he doubled up on his right with a flick jab to get silva to move his head into his left... that was masterful.. I have nothing but respect for Weidman, even though he beat my favourite fighter

as the only person speaking against gsp... I never was discounting his ability or skill.. he absolutely is dominant in his weight class (except for that time he lost his belt to serra).. but he's safe... and safe fights are boring fights... there's a reason why finishes are rewarded more highly than decision wins.. there's a reason why perennial middle of the pack fighters like joe lauzon are fan favourites and will have long lasting legacies well beyond their careers, and fighters like jon fitch and Jacob Volkmann are already forgotten..

credit where credit is due though... his "safe" game, it is a work of art.. he has hands down the fastest phase shift level drop to a double leg.. he has a viper-like straight jab that he extends into better than anybody else... and his top control is insane..

but even I enjoy watching him lose at this point.. how many front kicks did browne land on him?? at some point, you gotta decide "oh shit.... i'm probably going to have to defend THAT"

                    • thanks for an awesome response man, honestly.

Silva DID clown though and he got caught. You're right, he got away with it a lot in the past, but hey, ya gotta fall sometime. I like Silva too though, I think he is an interesting dude. Next battle should be nice.

GSP, you're right, safe isn't exciting. But I think you know what I'm saying about the whole "Sports" vs. "fight" thing. I think Dana had built a good franchise, they make serious cash. But he hung Rory out to dry the other day, and it KILLS him not to do the same to George more often. But the thing is, the very thing that ALLOWS him to have his franchise, the very guys that bring the "sport" into the game, he seems too eager to publicly fleece.

I like the bangers as much as the next guy, but those guys will always be the fun part of the middle of he card. The Elite level simply can't be that silly, these guys are too good now, and the money is too big. All the guys that tear into GSP, his peers, will also always wan what he has, his money, his stability, his legacy....but they are too afraid to do what hey have to do to get it. I simply respect the guy huge is all....and truth be told, he'd have easily 5-7 more knockout if he wanted them, but he'd also likely not have the belt, or at the least have a couple more losses. His choice is not to lose....and he's mega rich as a result.

Overeem....man I try to like the guy, but jesus, we all thought he juiced, then he got caught, and now it's just..... I simply see him as a bit of a douche. All that aside, his fights, over the years have been great, he's an offensive beast. But come on dude, the guy kicked ya in the face repeatedly...... I don't get it. hahaha

ps. Hendricks is average, but he has developed the left Hook i saw a lot on the boxing ring..its a little feint/delay, and its just brutal. As good as GSP is, I'm not sure he is not in serious danger in this upcoming fight if he even loses focus for a minute. Thats a fast as hell punch and you KNOW its coming....often.

I would never fault GSP for doing what he has to in order to ensure long lasting riches beyond my wildest dreams.. lol

my main argument in the Silva vs GSP argument for best ever would be.. longest winning streak ever with a majority of finishes vs. impressive win streak but safe wins in a tougher division..

now that I really think about it though... there is no argument... it's subject of opinion... you can say that middleweight is a thinner division, but it was long the home of the strongest jitz fighter in the sport (Maia), who dropped to welter and is owning fools... so is it that welterweight is stronger, or that the gap between silva and the rest of middleweight makes them look amateurish by comparison? again... matter of opinion

personally, I think Silva is the best ever... with GSP/Fedor/Megumi Fujii/BJ Penn/Aldo jockeying for the #2 spot.. and Jonny Jones quickly creeping up behind them

of course, Fedor, Fujii and BJ are pretty much done... so they're only going to go down on that list... And Fujii would only be on MY list... nobody knows who the fuck she is... japanese womens straw weights aren't exactly a hot division to follow (look her up.. started her career with 22 straight victories before finally losing.. impressive submission specialist).. and to be honest, BJ is only on there for sentimental reasons at this point

the finishes vs decisions argument is kinda pointless, to be honest... its like the Heat vs Spurs arguments... do you prefer the star laden athletic teams, or the fundamentally sound and disciplined teams.. all a matter of opinion

lol.. like I said.. Penn is purely sentimental... his absolute dismantling of Joe Stevenson was pretty much the main reason I started watching MMA more than casually.. and fighters who don't care about weight classes always have a special place in my heart... BJ fought at light heavy weight at one point.. lol

But, the thing was is hew was just taking them and they were the laziest leg kicks I've ever seen. There looked to be nothing behind them. He was just throwing his leg wieght at Overeem, there was seemingly no force.

                                And OVereem did.not.move.

I was like wtf is this? Some guy is just non-chalantly throwing his leg up at you basically waiting for you to make a move and you just stand there and continued to get kicked..it was like watching two half-tards fight.
