    MENSAH-BONSU JOINS CSKA

Great Britain forward Pops Mensah-Bonsu has signed for CSKA Moscow, subject to a medical, following his release last week by the Toronto Raptors.

The well-travelled 26-year-old chose to return to Europe after failing to get decent playing time with two NBA teams this season, having begun the campaign with the Houston Rockets.

He is now due in Moscow on Thursday to complete his switch to the Russian giants, who have won seven league titles in a row and sit top of the Superleague standings once again.

By returning to Europe, Mensah-Bonsu will hope to get the more regular playing time he needs as Great Britain prepare for their EuroBasket qualifying campaign this summer.

The qualifying draw will be made in Germany on Saturday.

I was really excited to see that Pops was brought back at the beginning of the season but after seeing how little he was used this year, I ended up disappointed. He has always been a spark off the bench and a high energy guy that seems to play as hard as he can for the short time that he's on the court.

What is it about him that can't keep a strong, extremely athletic, high energy player in the league? Does he just not have any court smarts? I remember that he scored 20 points in a Raptors game last season and had a number of other good games last year, but this year he was buried on the bench and rarely saw any court time. Was it a poor chemistry thing?

Sad to see him go because he was always fun to watch, but if he didn't fit this season's system then he should go somewhere that he fits in better and gets the playing time he deserves.

    Seeya Pops!

He had 2-3 good games last season. He disappeared down the stretch (when we were actually winning games), he couldn't hold on in Houston on a team decimated by injuries, and his poor work ethic put him on the bench in Toronto.

If he was even half the player that the majority of his fans thought he was, he would never have had an issue sticking to a team.

      Good riddance.

I liked having Pops + Amir come off the bench. I thought it brought more toughness to the interior. More energy. More athleticism. Sped up the tempo of the game. Ah well ...

Good to see Pops land on his feet and get a job with a top team like CSKA.

Ya, I think the fans loved him because of that one 20 point game but mostly because he was a high flyer that was capable of some big highlights (dunks, blocks and big rebounds). The problem was that he had no consistency and seemed to thrive on end of game minutes when he would match up against 2nd and 3rd string players. Nice guy, fun to watch but ultimately didn't help this team out. A more athletic Patrick O'Bryant.

            CSKA MOSCOW tabs Mensah-Bonsu

Already planning for the Euroleague's next round, CSKA Moscow on Tuesday announced the signing of center Pops Mensah-Bonsu for the remainder of the season, pending the medical tests. Mensah-Bonsu (206, 26) will replace Courtney Sims, who had been on a tryout with CSKA during the last two weeks. Mensah-Bonsu arrives from Toronto of the NBA, where he averaged 3.3 points and 3.1 rebounds in 53 games. Mensah-Bonsu most recently played int he Euroleague for DKV Joventut at the beginning of last season. He was, in fact, the top-rated player according to the Euroleague's performance rating before a shoulder injury ended his time with the Spanish club after just two games. The previous season, 2007-08, Mensah-Bonsu appeared in 11 ULEB Cup games for Benetton Treviso, averaging 10 points and 8.4 rebounds. Mensah-Bonsu started his career in his native England before playing at George Washington University in the United States. He has also played short-term for NBA teams Dallas, San Antonio and Houston before he arrived in Toronto. Mensah-Bonsu is also a member of the Great Britain national team and was its best scorer during Eurobasket 2009 with 13.3 points and 4 rebounds on average. In its announcement, CSKA said that Mensah-Bonsu will not play the team's last regular season game against Caja Laboral on Thursday for first place in Group C, and therefore will make his Euroleague comeback in the Top 16.
