  • Oakley out as Bobcats Assistant? Come back to us Oak!

Back problem could force Oakley to leave Bobcats' bench

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Charlotte Bobcats assistant Charles Oakley isn't sure he'll be able to return to his job because of a painful back condition he says was caused during an assault last year in Las Vegas.

Oakley has sued the Aria hotel-casino, claiming he was beaten by security guards in May 2010. Oakley said Saturday that two slipped disks from the incident led to a painful sciatic nerve condition that forced him to miss the Bobcats' final 13 games. He's still having trouble walking.

One of the NBA's all-time tough guys as a player, Oakley was in his first season as an assistant. He says he doesn't know if he'll need surgery and if he'll be able to be on the bench in the fall.

Coach Paul Silas says he'll decide soon whether to replace Oakley on his staff.

If he's replaced now, and is then able to return at some point, I wonder if he'd be interested in being an Assistand under whoever our new HC is.

I'd love to have Oakley back with the Raps.

Alex English on offense, and Oak on defense, thats a nice combo.
If we get someone thats a well rounded coach like Adelman or Woodsen, we might have a chance at the 7th seat.

Maybe. I don't know how good he is as a coach. I think he would certainly be a good consultant as a part time big man coach. Defense is tough to coach. I'd rather have somebody who is highly experienced at coaching it and has proven results.

Was looking around on the net and from what I read people seemed pretty happy, if not surprised, with his work as Assistant to Paul Silas. The guy knows the game and I can guarentee you he'd have the players respect. I'm not suggesting he be named Lead Assistant, but an Assistant none the less. You can have quite a few on your staff, and he'd be great to have around Ed and Amir.

Having guys like Alvin, JYD, and hopefully Oakley, come back and join the club post retirement, would reflect well on the Organization as a whole as well.

I'd be all for it despite lack of experience. A big part of defense is physical and mental toughness - Oak would help with both. He played with Bulls versus Pistons bad boys and was a big part of the New York intimidation in the Riley years.

Yeah I'd love to have oak on the bench to help the bigs, expecially Ed.

This is exactly what I thought he'd be PERFECT for. Oakley is the epitomy of Physical and Mental toughness. Having him get on Amir and Ed, game in and game out would do wonders for them as Defensive Bigs.

I remember he got on Vince that year during the playoffs .. the NEXT game, Vince went off for 50.
When Oakley tells you to step it up, you damn well better do it. haha

Sam Mitchell was very physical and very tough when he played, it's why he stuck in the league. Look at how his teams did on defense.

Yes but Oakley wouldn't be the Head Coach, like Sam Mitchell ... he'd be one of many Assistant Coaches helping out with Player Development.

Not sure what the problem with that would be. You can still bring in your 'Tom Thibedeau' for Defense if you like, but Oak would be good to have around the Young Big Guys. Thats all we are saying.
I can't see how it would be a bad thing, which is what it seems like you are implying it would be.

I didn't say there would be a problem. What I'm saying is let's not just assume he would be a good coach because he was a good player. It doesn't sound like he'll be good for anything for a while but I would be open minded to him coming in and working with the guys.

They did pretty good the 47 win season. They were 9th in defensive rating and 16th in OppPPG so above average and average.

I definitely wouldn't want him as a head coach. But a player development coach for big men, absolutely. Not only was he tough but he wasn't a gifted athlete. He did his work with positioning and bball IQ. Look at the impact he had with Kwame Brown this year. From my recollection of when Silas was hired, Oak became Kwame's personal handler.

It was up and down. Sam was always forced to work with new people due to all the change and he had mixed results when combating it; some good and some bad.

I really hope this is just posturing for the court case, otherwise welcome to junkdom.

I personally think that's all this is. Allows him to claim Real Damages due to the Beat down.
But nonetheless, if he is replaced in Charlotte due to his posturing, then that leaves him looking for a job.
