  • Trade Proposal...Complicated

To Golden State - Andrea Bargnani, Sonny Weems

To Hornets - Amir Johnson (3.9 EC), Antoine Wright (1.8 EC), Speedy Claxton (5.2 EC), Demar DeRozen, Jose Calderon, Anthony Randolph, Rasho (1.9 EC)

To Toronto - Chris Paul, Peja Stojakovich, Ronny Turiaf

Why Golden State does this Trade - Legitimate shoot first centre, who can play beside Biedrins. Bargnani would realize his potential in an uptempo Don Nelson system. Get rid of Turiaf's contract.

Why New Orleans - They save a boatload of money from expiring contracts (almost 12 mill). They get some good young prospects in Anthony Randolph and Demar as well as a replacement PG in Jose. Not to mention dumping a bad contract in Peja. Peja can be substituted for Posey, Songaila and Peterson if we include Belinelli. Saving them even more money over the long run. Or Okafor if they want to get rid of him instead. Really it's whatever contracts they would like to get out from under the most.

Why Toronto - Landing Chris Paul will ensure Bosh sticking around to see it out. It absolutely guts our team and we are paying a premium on getting Paul but Bosh and Paul should make us significantly competitive and we would still have some cap space in the summer of 2011-2012.

This scenario might be far fetched. I think the only question mark really is Golden State and if they want to invest in Bargnani. This is also assuming New Orleans holds some what of a fire sale for Paul.

You don't hold firesales for Top 3 players when they haven't asked to be traded nor have indicated that they're not happy where they are, and are tied to long-term contracts.

Stop dreaming. First, New Orleands will never trade Paul, Second New Orleands doesn't have 5 rosters spots to take 7 players and trade only 2. Third giving up 7 players in a single trade will never happen in the NBA and that includes three of your starting 5. I wouldn't do that trade

New Orleans is in dire straights right now, haemorrhaging money and needing a way to get out from under that. They are a fringe contender with no way of improving their roster. If they are willing to trade West (which will be followed by a Paul request to be traded) then they are writing their own future.

No way they trade West and not Paul, just can't happen, doesn't make sense. They are a team losing some of the most money in the league. I think Simmons touched on it quite well in an article in Dec.

What if someone made you a "Godfather" offer for Paul and absorbed your bad contracts? What then?

                • Mitigating Factor No. 1: Trading CP3 effectively murders basketball in New Orleans UNLESS it's a good enough deal. And even then, it's an attempted murder with a severe loss of blood.

                • Mitigating Factor No. 2: They can't use West to solve their tax issues because Paul would immediately demand out. For instance, let's say Houston offered them Shane Battier, $3 million and the Brian Cook/Chuck Hayes ECs for West, Peterson and Ike Diogu's EC. The Hornets would save $3.2 million in salary, $3.2 million in tax money, then earn another $3 million from the extra cash this season. Next season, they'd save another $7 million in salary and $5-7 million in tax money. On top of that, they'd be eligible for tax benefits as an under-the-tax team. Adding everything up, that trade would save them more than $22 million. But what's the collateral damage? Chris Paul says, "Get me out of here." So they couldn't go there unless they were ready to move Paul as well.

"Godfather offer" being young talent, draft picks and expiring contracts...
