...now watching him play he is already the best 5 on the team.
Even though everyone knows how well schooled European ballers are, I have to say his play in the pre-season has been a huge surprise. The foul trouble that was expected hasn't materialized. His knowledge of where to be defensively in Casey's system seems spot on, as if he has been playing in it for years. though they aren't finding him often on the pick and roll, he looks like he spent 6 months studying tape of Jose and Amir from the last two years.

What dampened enthusiasm a little were his stats from Europe and the Olympics. And, as has been pointed out on this forum previously by one of his countrymen, I believe, part of that is due to him being a young guy playing on established teams. I think how he was used by his coaches had as much to do with his stats as his ability. And he seems even better suited to the NBA game than Euroleague play.

I am super pumped to see what he is like by the All-Star break. Quite frankly, I don't even care how the Raps do this year, because watching this kid grow into one of the top 2-3 centers in the league in the next three years is going to give me goose bumps.

Oh...I am also super pumped about finding a facility with open gym time that I can get access to for $2.00 a trip. Maybe, with a couple of hours of practice to go along with the twice a week gaming, I can take the 6 blanks I shot during my old-timers game last Sunday and turn them into an ugly 3 for 6.

Anyone notice that Valanciunas hasn't won an opening tip yet (or even come close)? He's barely left the ground before the ball's already in the opposing PG's hands....

I did find that odd. I also found it odd that in Jonas' monster dunk last week, it looked like his toe was still on the floor when he put the ball in the basket. Maybe when your wingspan (shot!) is 90 feet, you don't jump that much. Then again, maybe he just hasn't had that much practice

A recent Insider article at ESPN shares the 10 things to look for this season. Tom Haberstroh writes this for #6:

Remember the name (and the pronunciation, too): Jonas Valanciunas

If you're looking for a reason the Toronto Raptors jumped to a 5-1 start in the preseason, look no further than the immediate impact of the 20-year-old Lithuanian big man, Jonas Valanciunas (pronounced Val-ehn-chew-ness). The near-7-footer has been an instant presence underneath, averaging more than eight points and eight rebounds in his past four games as the Raptors' starter. More impressively, he's kept his fouls down to a manageable level while seemingly blocking everything in sight.

It's too early to say whether Valanciunas is ready to be a legitimate NBA starter, but there's a lot to like about this kid as he tests the NBA waters for the first time. His youthful energy (he's probably calling for the ball as you read this) and underrated skills on the block has befuddled opposing defenses already. If Valanciunas is ready to be a cog in the middle, Dwane Casey could coach this team into the playoffs.

I've been thinking...Raptors should pay to have Jonas go and work with Hakeem during the off season. Jonas could turn into a real offensive weapon for us 3 years out. If we keep him and Bargnani together that is when I see this duo peaking.

I think he could be a real offensive cog by the end of the year. I am waaaay impressed with his on court presence. He is aware of where the ball is, his defender, and the motions of his team mates. Just a matter of familiarity in game situations before Lowry, Fields and Bargs start finding him regularly. I thought that Fields and he had a bit of chemistry going last game. Lowry is already looking for him.

I don't know what JV will do this year but I think he's going to surprise some people. Most of the season previews from other cities mention him as a project import. Then, anybody who has watched the preseason says, wow...look what this guy is doing. There may be a lot of that coming up. Under the radar suits us just fine

Default Burden of Saviour Weighs Heavy on Raptor's Jonas Valanciunas

    Link to a great article.

Right now, there is no joke to tell. He is confronting the expectations being placed on him. They are impossible to quantify, as being able to restore hope to a wayward franchise cannot be described with a simple metric.
“First of all, they are all thinking that I’m going to solve all of the problems,” Valanciunas says of Raptors fans and observers. “I don’t think so, not yet, because I have to solve my problems first.”
Hope he stays positive. Sounds like a great kid!
“Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.”

JV's got a lot of basketball IQ for a guy his age. And that alone helps him be as efficient as he was in those preseason games. Reminds me of his sensei!

Wonder if Sabonis is interested in playing on my oldtimers team. He would fit right in, except for being infinitely better.

Man, you know you're a hopeless basketball junkie when you see a youtube video of a 50-something Arvydas Sabonis playing in a meaningless exhibition game and your first thought is "hmm, that looks cool, think I'll check it out."

    Default Shoutout for JV!

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/30/sp...onference.html

"Anthony Davis was the No. 1 pick in the draft and picked up a gold medal at the London Olympics, but the most intriguing rookie in the East may be Jonas Valanciunas, above, a 6-foot-11 center from Lithuania. Drafted in 2011, Valanciunas could be a perfect complement to Andrea Bargnani, the Raptors’ most important player. The 20-year-old Valanciunas is thin, but he is an aggressive rebounder, and unlike many big men he is not a liability at the free-throw line."
