It is kind of amazing to me how poorly most players are at articulating, projecting their voices, speaking clearly and voicing something other than platitudes.
I mean, as a professional athlete, you are going to have to do interviews. What's wrong with spending 20 hours with a voice coach and maybe 10-15 hours with a tutor from Toastmasters? Wouldn't it help when it comes to endorsing products?

Besides these mini interviews are just so canned that the lockerroom cliches just come tumbling forth. There are two bb athletes who stand out to me who can speak on multi subjects...Nash & Grant Hill. Mutombo and Kobe arent bad either. These guys have interests outside of bball which helps a great deal.

As someone who does nothing but negotiate and talk for a living I can tell you that being on TV, etc. is extremely challenging for anyone, regardless of education. It takes a lot of time, practice and experience to be good at it. It's why politicians are so scripted and rehearsed. It is very easy for anyone to say stupid things or get lost and look dumb. It's why companies pay a lot of money for PR departments, so presidents, vice-presidents, engineers, lawyers, bankers (all smart, well-educated), etc. don't get in trouble.

What annoys me are the vague, generic answers to the question, "what have you worked on this summer". Instead of specifically mentioning 3-point shooting, court vision, defensive techniques, dribbling skills, post moves, etc., we get the usual, "I've been working on everything to become a more complete player". Thanks for nothing.

If you say defense and 3-pt shooting you'll have people criticizing the order you said them in. If you say 7 things you'll have people criticizing you for not focusing. There's a reason for the rote answers - they keep you out of trouble. As soon as someone speaks says something blunt and truthful, they get hammered, so, no one says anything. Then we criticize them for not saying anything. See how this works?
Similarly, Amir said he's been working on a quicker release on his jumper. I haven't heard anything negative about that yet.
