Trading to Free up $$ for Outright Signing of Wilson Chandler

Ok, I have been watching the Pau Gasol rumour wire, but it still remains that the strongest desire-motivated suitor is Houston, but the Lakers don't seem to want Martin. Minnesota however does, and the Lakers had previously pursued Beasley (who Minny wants to ship out.)

For the Raptors this is about prospects, picks and getting money free to sign Chandler now:

Houston really likes Gasol and HAVE ALREADY offered Scola, Martin, Dragic, and their pick for him (the failed Chris Paul trade), Adelman likes Martin and Minny needs a SG, the Lakers want Beasley, have been looking for a 3pt shooting bench spark plug for a while (Barbosa). They may need to ship out another piece to Houston to fit the number of players to the roster. Barnes would be the likely choice since this would need to be done before March 1st for this to work for the Raptors (although that part of the trade could go ahead now).

Toronto gets a prospect PG with potential but backup at the most for now. The pick could be used on Lillard/Kabongo/Marshall, but ultimately this is about freeing up money to sign Chandler removing over $7M from the books NOW.

Would look to sign a bench SG with the mid-level exception or a PF if the draft yields a JLamb or the like. Sullinger would be a change of pace from Bargnani. Giving me a laugh with a Sullinger/Gray front court the opposing teams could be leaving with some serious bruises...

Denver is not going to help Toronto out to be friendly, they need something out of it. Denver has a shortage at PF and an over abundance at C. Maybe they do this:

I just copied and pasted from another thread. It would be a way to get around the no sign and trade.

Obviously Denver would have to be on board to do these.

I'm not sure how much they want to keep him though. If that letter of clearance comes before March 1st, he can just sign the qualifying offer and become UFA this summer. He'll be so bitter with the way things have gone he'll walk for nothing.

Things have changed since I originally thought of this trade. Trading Gray after March 1st is not going to happen because it doesn't help Toronto get cap space to sign WC before March 1st.

The second trade on the trade machine link has Atlanta but that is to only show that the trade does satisfy the number requirements of the CBA. Essentially, the Lakers immediately send Hinrich to Toronto for Calderon. Remember individual players can be traded on their own an infinite number of times which is why Q. Richardson was traded 5 or 6 times in the summer of 2010.


Both trades combined (i.e. looking at the final result) would look like this:

ATL: Barbosa,
LAL: Calderon
TOR: Morris, Hinrich, 1st round pick from Lakers in 2012


Toronto gains another $8.3M in cap space in addition to the $4.3 they have. They can make an offer to WC that gives Denver reason to rethink keeping him. Toronto has a prospect PG in Morris and a veteran in Hinrich.

Here is a way to gain back $4M in cap space to get us to about $8.3M, and is a slight adjustment to my initial wet-dream trade, without using Denver's services:

Phoenix: Bayless, Davis, Barnes, Toronto's 2013 pick
LAL: Calderon, Beasley
Minnesota: Barbosa

Phoenix may not do this, but getting 2 expiring contracts, the potential in Davis and Bayless, plus a 2013 pick may be the best deal they get for a 38 year old Nash who could end up as a UFA. LAL is interested in Beasley through rumours.. in exchange Minny gets guard depth that they need who is also an expiring. Toronto sheds an additional $4M so they can get Chandler, and can draft Kabongo with LA's pick.

The bad part of this deal is having to deal with MWP's salary. You could use Walton instead of MWP, but then LA has to get rid of another player (like Goudelock or Morris).
