  • Calderon to Indiana?

    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMa...radeId=6o8lnjt

    Toronto: Dahntay Jones, Darren Collison
    Indiana: Jose Calderon, Leandro Barbosa

This trade idea is, sadly, not my own. You can read the original here.

Personally, I like it. Here is why:

Raptors get a PG with upside, in my opinion. Collison might not have lived up to expectations after his first year in New Orleans but he still did manage 9 assists per game as a starter his rookie year. It could very well been because of the system that made him successful but I think he could enjoy success in Casey's systems. Defensively he is small but he is fast - if he can keep his man in front of him, I think Casey can work with the challenge of him getting posted up. Collison has also cut down his turnovers in the league - from 4.1 as a starter in rookie season to 2.5 last year to 1.8 this year. Jones is a solid veteran and tough perimeter defender. At this time the Raptors do not have a defensive specialist and I am sure he could be very useful in particular situations.

Another big reason to like this is it frees up $13M this season in addition to the $4.3 in cap space the Raptors already have. They could make a decent offer to Wilson Chandler ($7M?) and head in to the summer with around the same amount of money tied up in 12 players as they would have with Jose and 10 players leaving around $11.5 for free agency. If they didn't get WC they head in to the summer with around $16.8M in cap space (resign Gray, sign a backup PG, hopefully enough money left $9-10M to sign one impact/rotational player) and draft a SG/SF for James Harden-like role.

    Possible Roster:

    PG: Collison, backup
    SG: DeMar, pick, Jones
    SF: WC, JJ, Kleiza
    PF: Bargnani, Amir, ED
    C: JV, Gray, Alabi

    +1 roster spot.

If this was offered, you take it and RUN! No question. It frees up more cap space and we'd get a decent, young 1 in Collison. I'm extremely surprised that someone from Indiana even posted it - but it just goes to show you what Calderon's worth really is.

I would be pretty content with this, would love to see if Collison could put up near number to what he had in new orleans and if he could we would have our point guard of the future planned out along with shedding lots of cash. We even get a back-up shooting guard as well in Dahntay Jones who, doesn't require too many minutes if we need chandler to pick some up at sg as he only gets around 15 right now backing up sf and sg. I like the deal. I was very high on Collison last year, and would have liked to see Collison come over then. He's no game changer though - and we'd still need to find a long term answer for that position, but he'd be a good guy to have for the next year or two until we can find someone else.

My one small beef is that we do not get an additional pick out of this deal. Calderon is our best opportunity to obtain another draft pick, especially with his play this season. And if we do this deal, I don't see anyone else on our roster that might be able to obtain a pick. Perhaps Amir or Kleiza, but I'm a fan of both, and I'm not sure I'd want to give either of them up for a pick.

If Indy throws in a pick (preferably their first rounder), it's a no brainer for me.

Realistically I'm not sure if Bird would go through with this. If their plan is to go all in on Gordon in the off season, they'll want as much cap space flexibility as possible. With this deal they reduce their cap space from $14M to about $8M (assuming Barbosa leaves). That would probably hinder their ability to get Gordon. The only way would be to trade Granger for additional cap space, which may be tough to do.

Sign me up! That would be one that helps both teams!

Jose & Leandro help out this team going into the playoffs. Jose can get guys like Granger, West, Hibbert the ball, and could be easily successful. Barbosa starting or off the bench can contribute. Collison would be the point guard we may need, explosive, plays defense, aggressive, and is underrated at getting the guys the ball. We need another defensive player to help out James Johnson. Plus money to go after Wilson Chandler is really what I got excited about.

Problems is they lose defensively with a stopper, and they lose an explosive point guard that'll match up with Rondo, Rose, Holiday, Teague. Where Indiana is sitting right now, Jose will either flourish, or ran around by Teague.

All-in-all, good potential in the trade. Lets start, "WE WANT CHANDLER"

IMO i think collison is good for our PG of the future. He has good upside and he doesn't have to be an all star he'd fit nicely with our guys. He doesn't need to be an absolute game changer but he's more explosive and quick than calderon which will really help

I really do not like the idea of moving Jose, but this deal I like. We get a tough defender, a promising player, cap space. Makes both teams better. Does it hurt our chances of landing a nice FA? Would it be silly of me to think that a point guard like Jose attracts scoring wings a bit more then a Collison?

Collison would be more attractive, because of his success with guys like Chris Paul. But, Jose makes players better, because he's just so good at getting the right guys the ball in the right spots.

Apparently, many believe the right spots are not in Toronto.
