Default Unlikely/Not commonly mentioned signings that could be a good idea...

Everyone seems pretty set on who they want to go after this summer but I thought I would put a couple names out there that nobody else seems to be mentioning that could be good for our future.

Jason Kidd, Dallas Mavericks – $8.6 million – Unrestricted

In the twilight of his career the man is a proven point guard, and could probably be had for the mid level exception.

Positives: He has stated he has no qualms about playing backup PG for a few more years as he still feels he has some game in him. He would be a great mentor for a new PG should we sign one (Dragic) or draft one (Marshall)

    Chauncey Billups, L.A. Clippers – $2.0 million – Unrestricted

    Positives: See Jason Kidd
Negatives: Achilles injuries are a bitch to get over when your young (some estimates are two years to be FULLY healed) let alone older. May not want to be part of a young team.

Leandro Barbosa, Indiana Pacers – $7.6 million – Unrestricted

Positives: We all know what he does. And he could probably be had for less than the 7.6
Negatives: Not sure if there is a rule against resigning someone who just left your team.

Landry Fields, New York Knicks – $0.8 million – Unrestricted*
New York has an interesting situation. The need to throw money at Lin, JR smith. Imam Shumpert is a defensive nightmare and since Carmelo is taking all the shots and JR Smith is taking all the shots off the bench a decision will need to be made.

Positives: A solid all around player and great locker room guy

Mickael Pietrus, Boston Celtics – $1.2 million – Unrestricted

Positives: A solid defensive presence can shoot the 3. I was really excited when I heard we were getting him this year and very disappointing when we didn't He can start if necessary and is great off the bench

Marco Belinelli, New Orleans Hornets – $3.4 million – Unrestricted

Positives: A true SG that was misused in his time here. I wish he could have another shot here under the new system. I always liked the way he moved off the ball.

Anthony Parker, Cleveland Cavaliers – $2.3 million – Unrestricted

Positives: Class act, 3pt shooting, locker room guy. Solid backup that could start if necessary. Still has a few years of game in him.

Grant Hill, Phoenix Suns – $6.5 million – Unrestricted

Positives: A true defensive specialist. Could be used to help out a young MKG(if the gods bless us) or motivate and shape James Johnson. Would be playing on his last contract and would likely not command much in the way of salary.

Rasual Butler, Toronto Raptors – $1.2 million – Unrestricted

Positives: his ability to count to 5. a true game changer in terms of his clutch shooting...(If you hadn't figured out by now I was kidding, please attend my sarcasm training workshop)

Anyway these are but a few of the many free agents available. I chose to pick unrestricted free agents as it is the least messy in terms of acquiring them.

Feel free to contribute your own suggestions since the overwhelming majority of the time we never sign the guy everyone wants, we are far more likely to snag someone under the radar or at the end of their career.

The Knicks seem to have our front court situation in their back court...a trade would be mutually beneficial

I actually wouldn't be totally surprised if Barbosa is brought back as the backup SG, as long as the Raptors don't draft a SG in the lottery. I get the feeling that BC/DC aren't sold on Forbes as being a reliable backup, so Barbosa would provide both a spark of the bench and a veteran presence in the locker room. I wouldn't be a big fan of this move, but I could definitely see it happening.

I would give the rest of that group a 99.9998% chance of NOT signing with Toronto, especially given the fact that several of them played (or could have played here, in the case of Pietrus) with the Raptors previously.

Many of the players you mentioned don't seem like guys willing to sit through a building process, Kidd, Billups, Pietrus and Hill...no shot of coming to Toronto in my opinion. We had a shot at Peitrus, but he is not the answer for this team at the 3...will be 31 one next season.

Barbosa, Belinelli, and Fields are guys I would consider at the right price, the way Fields shooting percentages dropped this year scare me a bit though, and Marco is a low percentage guy as well, but he does play with some flare....whatever that's worth.

This is a different team since some of those guys left. I don't think any of them left on bad terms BC is pretty good about not shooting himself in the foot

Kidd and Billups might as they now have their rings and might just want a final pay day. Pietrus and Hill lack rings...so you are probably right about them. Hill does have an existing relationship with BC.

A lot of the people I mentioned were as backups/role players/mentors.

I can't say that any of those guys pique my interest. Perhaps Barbosa (if we don't draft Beal).

I would add via restricted free agency: Landry Fields.

    Via trade: Wesley Matthews.

Barbosa and Anthony Parker would be interesting bench players.

Always liked Parker when he was here. Solid pro, good defender. Still has some game from what I have seen over the last couple of years. It's all about the price.

our man barbosa (and only b/c he has good chemistry with the team), that's it. The rest of those players are a waste of space/money.

I would send ed davis over to NY for Shumpert. I think he would be good at the 2 and shift DD to the 3

Grant Hill and Billups both would be great rentals for the youngsters but I doubt either would like to play here. Billups was very angry when he was traded to NYC so I'm not sure if he would be happy about Toronto. Hill apparently loves Phoenix and wants to finish there. If Colangelo signs either of those guys it's a score.

First team options : Rasual Butler

Bench options : Barbosa and Parker

veterans : Kidd is still a very good veteran. handles well, defends well at 1/2, shoots the occasional 3ball.

This thread written in the new font "sarcastica".

why hasn't that font been invented yet?!

For real, though. I've got a strong interest in Fields.

None of those guys are coming here though considering where we are in the "rebuilding" process.

I mean none of the veteran guys. Guys on the knicks and such could come.

I think we have to play Moneyball here. Trying to find diamonds in the rough, guys who never really have got a shot.

I don't see a point in throwing a bunch of money at one guy. But, that's just me.
