  • Deep Bench Players 10 - 15 - Who Do You Like?

Usually these spots on a roster are reserved for a few project players or a savvy character type vet to instill one thing or another into the young guys on the team. They also need to be good enough that teams don't lose several steps should the inevitable injury occur to a starter.

So what kind of players should the raptors target for 10 - 15 this upcoming season.

    Who I Like...

PG - Ben Uzoh ( very solid defensively, earned himself a roster spot with his play this season )
SG - Andy Rautins - he was taken early in the second round and has some serious range. Not sure what he could develop into but his ceiling seems like 6th man or 3pt specialist.
C - Jamaal Magloire - brings the character and focus - enforcer...good locker room guy
C - Robert Sacre - he is a legit 7ft big body seems hungry to prove something (being Canadian always helps)
F - Julian Wright - great defender being the d-league for a year might have humbled him enough to accept the bench. I don't think he is done in the NBA yet

Hard to project the 3rd stringers, when both the 1st and 2nd string is likely to look significantly different two months from now!

In order to do so, one would have to make assumptions about the top-10 players in the lineup:
C: Valanciunas, Gray (assume he will be re-signed)
PF: Bargnani, Amir/Davis (assume at least one will be traded)
SF: JJ, Kleiza (assume if another SF is brought it, one will be shipped out)
SG: DD, ??? (assume a wing of some sort will be drafted with the lottery pick)
PG: Calderon, ??? (assume a backup PG will either be drafted or signed)

#11 - Forbes, who is under contract and will likely stick as the #3 SG (can this team be a playoff contender if he's the backup SG?)
#12 - Uzoh, who I think showed enough promise as a young player to be the team's #3 PG
#13 - I could see Magloire re-signing to be the team's #3 C, almost as a player-coach type guy, given all the positive talk about him by both BC and Casey
#14-15 - could be rookies if the Raptors keep both of their 2nd round picks, or a bad contract that is acquired as part of a trade to acquire a stud player, or else left open to start the season (since only 13 players are required)

I like Raja Bell...Kobe likes Raja Bell...not sure if he is ready to take on 3rd string duties as of yet.

I gotta google this Nolan Smith guy (after I searched him I smacked my head...how did I forget who he was ???)

I would love to have Kurt Thomas here

I love the idea of Robert Sacre as one of our 2nd round picks. Definitely could be a poor man's Taj Gibson/Tyson Chandler in the NBA. Even if he ends up being a Dan Gadzuric (worst case?), still a solid 5th or 6th big to have on the bench.

As for Julian Wright, I don't think he'll crack any more NBA rosters for a while, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Other names to throw out there (all UFAs):
          Kelenna Azubuike
          Dominic McGuire
          DaJuan Summers
          Jared Jeffries
          Vladimir Radmanovic
          Hamed Haddadi
And my personal favourite... Eduardo Najera

Except Ben Uzoh (I am just not sure about him yet) I completely agree with you. Rautins wasn't terrible and we can see the connection. So far I like Jamal, I watched the Bulldogs so I really like Sacre (he sometimes dissapears in games though)
I liked Julian...without his "let me take off my bag from my shoulders type of jump shot"

I say keep Ben Uzoh as 3rd string and resign Forbes. If we get Nash then trade calderon and amir for milsap and Bell have bell as our 3rd string sg(or forbes). Our second rounders could pick up a PF. And our first rounder could get a 2nd string PG and Magloire would be a good veteran presence
              PG: Nash/1st rounder/Uzoh
              SG: DeRozan/Forbes/Bell
SF: Milsap/JJ/Kleiza(deepest sf position in the nba?)
              PF: Bargnani/ED/2nd rounder
              C: Valanciunas/Gray/Magloire

That's a lot of ifs though. I doubt anything like this would happen but that would be crazy

I know we want experience in our rotation next year, but for bench filler - I honestly wouldn't mind drafting BOTH our 2nd rounders to take the spots.

#36 & #56 could be NBA players in due time. Maybe: Khris Middleton & Tyshawn Taylor. Or: Darius Miller & Robert Sacre.
