For those keeping track of the Grizzlies off season expenditures, they are now a luxury tax payer.

    http://shamsports.com/content/pages/.../grizzlies.jsp

They have a payroll of $71.042M which includes the 2 year deals with 2nd year team option for Speights and Arthur at $3.5M/$5.0M.

Wroten has a cap hold of $925K but just about every single rookie signs for the max allowed of 120% of rookie scale so that is $1.11M. MEM tried to hold out on Xavier Henry a few years ago but they eventually signed for the 120%.

So the payroll is actually $72.152M and that is luxury tax territory.

The Grizz would have until June 30, 2013 to get below the tax.

However, they still do not have a reliable backup PG and are lacking the shooters needed to open the inside for Randolph and Gasol i.e. all the same problems of last year.

The contract for Arthur is 3 years and $9M.

With signing of Bayless, Grizz still in luxury tax.

But the question is, does the new owner mind paying luxury taxes?

    Exactly.

As Detroit showed, when a team is in the sale process, almost nothing happens.

Rough day for prospective new Grizzlies owner:

    darren rovell ‏@darrenrovell

Prospective Grizzlies owner Robert Pera lost $365 million today http://sprts.bz/PeraLoss
With what he lost today, he could of just bought the team and paid 40% of the payroll for this upcoming season! Gives new meaning to rough day at the office.

Funny that the #1 concern with getting Gay was assets required to get him.

    Calderon
    ED
    2nd rd pick

I never would have dreamed before the season started.... hell, even last week.... that would get it done.

Same here. Caldy was likely on his way out, and Ed arguably is very close to his ceiling. 2nd round picks are usually useless. Gotta love selling high

Yup, we traded 2 players (who prior to the season, were identified as "needed to trade"), and here we are today complaining we traded them.

    +1

i understand the ed supporters, i'm one. but jose, i don't get. guy was gone in 3 months for nothing. same people complain that we never use the cap space we have, we used it, and now we should have preserved it.

if management really opens the books then keeping our core players is as simple as someone else paying for lunch.

    Tom Liston ‏@Liston
#NBA The Memphis Grizzlies could use a solid wing right now. Should explore trying to obtain Rudy Gay
IF anyone followed OKCs man handle of the Grizz I thought this tweet was funny lmao.

Wow. Can't believe we actually got Rudy Gay, after all this discussion of being a "pipe dream"

Wow. Most of us were worried about assets required to get him. Most of us should be pretty damn happy with the trade then

Turns out so many people were worried by the initial trade, we had an entire Poll dedicated to why we DIDN'T want Rudy.

I totally forgot about this Poll.

Thought it'd be fun to read through this old Thread. It wasn't.
