Rudy Gay – If the Memphis Grizzlies decide that it’s time to part ways with Rudy Gay, they’ll have no shortage of potential suitors for the small forward. A number of teams have inquired about Gay including the Charlotte Bobcats, Toronto Raptors, Golden State Warriors and Brooklyn Nets. The 25-year old is owed $53,666,790 over the next three years, but executives continue to express interest because of his potential. Gay’s name has been discussed a lot in recent weeks, but it’s unclear whether Memphis is looking to move him. League sources believe he could be dealt if the right offer comes along.
Interesting... lets compare what each of those teams can offer, as far as cap relief, draft picks and good/young/cheap assets:

    TORONTO
    - $17.019M cap space available (based on last year's salary cap; excluding draft picks & cap-holds)
    - $41.025M committed: Bargnani, Calderon, DeRozan, Kleiza, Amir, Johnson, Davis, Forbes
    - 2012 Draft: #8, #37, #56
    - 2013 Draft: 1st round pick, 2nd round pick
    - Assets: DeRozan, Davis, JJ

    CHARLOTTE
    - $10.468M cap space available
    - $47.576M committed: Maggette, Thomas, Biyombo, Williams, Walker, Henderson, Mullens, Diop/Carroll (player options), Augustin (qualifying offer)
    - 2012 Draft: #2, #31
    - 2013 Draft: 1st round pick (top-12 protected to Chicago), could get Portland's 1st round pick (top-12 protected), no 2nd round pick
    - Assets: Biyombo, Williams, Walker, Henderson, Augustin

    GOLDEN STATE
    - $2.210M OVER the cap
    - $60.254M committed: Bogut, Lee, Jefferson, Biedrins, Wright, Curry, Thompson, Tyler, Rush (qualifying offer)
    - 2012 Draft: #7, #30, #35, #52
    - 2013 Draft: 1st round pick (top-6 protected to Utah), no 2nd round pick
    - Assets: Curry, Rush, Thompson

    BROOKLYN
    - $40.149M cap space available (assuming Williams declines his option)
    - $17.895M committed: Morrow, Petro, Brooks, J.Williams, Farmar (player option), Lopez (qualifying offer)
    - 2012 Draft: #57
    - 2013 Draft: 1st round pick, could get Houston's 1st round pick (top-14 protected), no 2nd round pick
    - Assets: Lopez, Morrow, Brooks

GAY - $16.46M salary next season

    * Toronto & Brooklyn are only teams that could trade for Gay without giving a bad contract back to Memphis
    * of Toronto/Brooklyn, Toronto is the only team with a 2012 1st round pick and/or good assets making under $4M (Davis, DD, JJ)

It all comes down to whether or not the Grizzlies' new owner is a cheap ass.

I'm not a spiritual person, but I will get down on my knees and pray for Nash and Gay in Toronto, with a lotto pick maintained.

If Bryan is able to pull off a Nash+Gay+pick summer.. I'd be first in line to give him that extension.

There's no way they get Gay while maintaining the pick

Maintaining the 8th pick, probably not. But somehow acquiring another pick, you never know...

Nicolas Batum will enter the market as a restricted free agent now that the Portland Trail Blazers have tendered him a qualifying offer, reports The Oregonian.

Blazers general manager Neil Olshey considers Batum one of the core players on the team and he calls the Batum-LaMarcus Aldridge duo the "bedrock" of the future.

A lot of teams have interest in Batum and his agent plans to shop the small forward, even though Olshey says he will match any offer sheet.

"Every player has business in his mind," Bouna Ndiaye said. "They can have love, they can feel good, but they all have business in their minds. That's why they have an agent and an adviser and stuff. We'll see what happens, but we're going through the (free agent) process."

Teams that may tender an offer sheet to Batum include Charlotte, Toronto, Cleveland, New Orleans and Houston.

Batum can choose to become a free agent in 2013, if he only accepts the one-year, $4.38 million qualifying offer.

I have no interest in a bidding war for an unproven player. I would much rather pay Gay $18 million for 3 seasons, than Batum $12 million for 5 seasons.

Are the Grizzlies already looking for Gay's replacement? One can only hope, lol

Adam Morrison is trying to get back into the NBA, and the former third overall draft pick is part of the group of free agents who recently worked out for the Memphis Grizzlies. Per the Commercial Appeal: “The Grizzlies looked Monday at the possibility of adding a two-time NBA champion to their roster as a free agent. [...] Adam Morrison, 27, spent the past two years playing in Europe and was considered an NBA bust after the Charlotte Bobcats made him the third overall pick in the 2006 draft. The 6-8 small forward last played in the NBA for the Los Angeles Lakers. He primarily sat on the bench during two straight title runs in 2009 and 2010. But the Griz wanted to see if Morrison recaptured the shooting ability that earned him that high lottery selection out of Gonzaga. Morrison never panned out for the Bobcats, having endured a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in 2007 and unyielding criticism for shooting 37 percent in four NBA seasons. Morrison was one of several former NBA players auditioning for the Grizzlies. The team declined to reveal the names of players participating in the free-agent camp, and declined to comment on the session. Morrison received an invitation after reportedly performing well at a free-agent camp put on by the Brooklyn Nets in May.”

Interesting perspectives on the Raptors "offseason outlook" from CNNSI

                    LINK: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/201...ncy/index.html

                    TORONTO RAPTORS

Top Free Agents: Jerryd Bayless (R)

                    Draft Picks: 8, 37, 56

Coach Dwane Casey came in last season and transformed the culture of the team from soft and nonchalant to disciplined and hard-nosed -- especially on defense, where Toronto jumped from 30th the last two seasons in points per possession to 14th, with essentially the same personnel. Among the Raptors' needs is a point guard to replace Jose Calderon, a capable, sure-handed floor general in the half-court offense but one Raptor whose defense didn't improve much under Casey. Calderon has one year and $10.6 million left on his contract. The team could also use a classic big man to body up opposing centers while Jonas Valanciunas matures. (Valanciunas, the No. 5 pick in 2011, is expected to join the team from Europe for the 2012-13 season). In addition, Toronto would benefit from a wing scorer to provide points off the bench or push DeMar DeRozan into that role.

I actually really like the idea of DeRozan as the Raptors 6th man. He doesn't seem to do as well as the 2nd/3rd option on offense and his lack of 3pt shooting hurts the starting lineup. He showed at the end of the season that when he is "the guy", he can get to the rim and to the foul line, to put points on the board. He could do serious damage playing against the opposition's 2nd unit.

                    • He would be a very dangerous 6th man, in my opinion. If we get a SG who can defend the position well, hit 3's and have enough offense to not be a liability, I wouldn't be opposed to it. (someone like Danny Green, Courtney Lee*, J.J. Redick...?)

I'm not sure if he'll take it well, but I mean, James Harden is a 6th man as well.

We do still need an upgrade at the 3 spot. James Johnson is sort of like a defensive specialist, but not a lot of offense/shooting.

*Btw, the article suggests that Jose did not improve much defensively. I beg to differ.

I agree with the Harden comparison. I think DD would be great starting out on the bench and being the 6th man scoring sparkplug, but he could still wind up playing "starters minutes" and being in the top-5 on the team in minutes played.

                        Comment

                        • Exactly. I mean Jason Terry plays huge minutes, so does Ginobili.

It wouldn't be the worst situation, seeing his strength remains in the area of scoring in bunches & stretches. It will also lessen the expectations.

It could work, but it requires matured cohones in DeMar's part to accept it, as well as a pretty good back up point guard & shooting around him. Bench mob starring DeMar? Why not

With Mayo being renounced, Gay is very likely no longer available.

I can't help but feel that Iggy to Toronto is almost a foregone conclusion... it seems almost too easy to connect the dots at this point.

I wonder what the deal would involve? JJ & Ed & 2013 1st round pick for Iggy? Could Calderon be involved? I wouldn't want to giveup DeRozan for Iggy.
