We desperately needed a guy who can make corner threes and now we have one. I think you;ll see Novak come in for some small ball beside Demar and Gay. He's a good addition to the team, a solid bench player who can actually contribute in a meaningful way in limited minutes.
I think some of us are experiencing the "Raptor Fan Syndrome" again. A player is acquired and we tend to hype up the guy, trying to make him fit.

Novak does make threes, unfortunately, that's all he does. He has a 110 DRting and his FG% is even worse than his 3PT%. He attempted 33 FTs in 81 games. and his only other stat thats not in the decimal place (besides pts) is his rebounding which is at 1.9 in 20mins.

The fact that Novak is big enough to play the 4 spot and stretch the floor big time is definitely an upside to having him.
I think i'll shudder at the thought of him guarding the likes of Millsap, Jefferson, Bosh and Love.

If they were to play him his natural spot which is SF, LBJ, Durant and even Kahwi will have him for dinner.

          • I have no illusions about Novak. I know he is a corner three specialist and defensive liability. At 3.5m I know he is an easily tradeable one should he not fit here. Either way he is an asset.

He was awesome, that's why it was so easy to trade him.
In fairness to Bargnani, a nontraditional big man who averages 15 pts. 5 rbs. and shoots a good 3 pointer is a player a team would love to have.

We Raptor fans, understandably, had VERY high expectations from him because he was picked 1st overall. Unreasonable from Bargnani's point of view because he did not pick himself 1st and he did not tell Raps. fans to have high expectations. It may not have seemed like it but he tried.

I wonder how he got that contract -- as only an occasional 3pt specialist I'm surprised he's not getting the vet minimum

maybe he can work with Gay/DeMar as a 3pt shooting-"coach"

                  • I'm not a fan of Novak at all.. I think he's too much of a liability on defense. Role players with one skill don't interest me at all.

I would be more than happy to flip Novak for someone else. His salary though would make him very easy to flip. So I still love the trade, but just not the players we got.

Something not sure has been mentioned but if bargnani thought toronto fan treatment was rough wait until he pulls that shit in NYC
Actually he will be treated better in New York. When I say that I don't mean to say that New Yorkers are better people, but that unlike here(high expectations), he'll be just another guy on the team.

                      • The Knicks will send Steve Novak, Marcus Camby, Quentin Richardson and a 2016 first-round draft pick to the Raptors in exchange for Bargnani, a jump-shooting big man who has been considered a bust since being taken with the No. 1 overall pick in 2006. Richardson, a free agent, will go to Toronto in a sign-and-trade deal. The Knicks are also giving up second-round picks in 2014 and 2017.

The deal cannot become official until July 10, when the league’s annual moratorium on signings and trades is lifted.

He can shoot threes so he will be of some value as a role player from time to time.

Advanced stats also suggest he was more efficient than the likes of Bargnani, Ross, Fields, Kleiza, Gray, Anderson and Telfair. Don't expect much though... He's better than Butler in regards to that bad comparison. At one time, when he was a Clipper, Q-Rich was a hot commodity.

On a side note, in a highly vaunted draft class that 2nd rounder may be of more use than we think.

I think both the Nuggets and Knicks are just as like to be in the lottery in 2016 as in the playoffs so that 1st rounder is alright by me. Chances are the Raptors flip it again though.

So if it is a Sign and Trade then he was willing to come play in Toronto. Interesting.
I don't think it was a matter of him wanting to play in Toronto. At this point in his career, he would join any team that would sign him for the veteran's minimum.

I personally didn't really care that he was drafted first overall.. my problem is that he was the antithesis of what a 7 footer should be able to do.. ie, rebound + defend.

He had plenty of time to develop his rebounding/defense and because he had such a poor motor it was harder to watch him play. The eye test was showing that he was a liability to the team, and then stats backed that up. If he was given less minutes, a different role, and didn't cost as much then the fans would not be so outraged (at least in my opinion).

Management failed Bargnani, and Bargnani failed management, and they both failed the fans. I am so glad that they are both finally gone.

My opinion (after many years of support for him) is his problems were rooted in his lack of fitness. He was unable to sustain activity at both ends of the court and hence his lesser play at the defensive end. The last few years I noticed how pale he would get as the game went on and the fitness issue also started to manifest itself with his calf injuries I believe as he got older. I have heard rumblings that he was not exactly on a off season training regimen either. I am sure one will hear stories now that he has been traded.
