http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/features/rumors looks like Cavs are regretting going with Thompson over JV. The coach says he backs the pick of Thompson but to bring JVs name up to me, means someone up high wished they went with big JV.
Tristan Thompson is already a much better than average defender and has shown something other than just dunks in the past few games. He was a 3-5 years project when he was drafted. His offensive production has gone down since he started wearing his not-as-cool-as-Kyrie's-mask.

I like JV but I think the people who rate the players in the Quick Reaction capsules are fooling themselves by mostly giving Jonas a B or better after almost every game. Sure he hustles but he also males many mistakes. I think the grades reflect more the fact he is the new AntiBargs than anything else. While I do expect him to become a better than average quality starter in a few years, I don't see him as talented enough to become a franchise player..

Lots of words just to say I doubt Cleveland regrets having taken TT over JV at this stage of their careers. We'll know more in two years when both play at a level that is much closer to their ceiling.

    • Is there any word on how long JV will out of the lineup?

      • JV will miss this week/road trip of games. So not too long but still sucky.

Jonas Valanciunas saw hand specialist Dr. Herb von Schroeder (Toronto Western) on Sat. Surgery will not be required; expected out 4-6 wks.

            • Guys, since Jonas is out for sometime, I would like to make my fist impression of his NBA start so far. He suprised me with some things - he's more ready defensively than it looked during Olympic games. He looks more physically ready than expected as well. He's lacking strenght, but he doesn't let other guys to harm him. Also, it seems that most of things he did in Europe, he can do it in NBA as well. However, what I wanted to say here and to emphasize - I haven't seen one single NBA game yet where Valančiūnas would be himself exactly. By that I mean he still looks strained and lacking natural confidence. He does everything with little too much of freak- out and yet most Americans were surprised with hsi offensive game, I can clearly say this thing didn't let him to show his natural presence in offense. I know there's natural rookie wall, but I think JV could do it already better if not this mental affection. He still trying to figure it out mentaly. Particalary, I still haven't seen a game where JV would show all his beauty of soft touch and craftiness that he really has in his game. Yet he still doing very well as a rookie, IMO. That will surely come with time. He showed hustle, heart, motor, athleticism and some skills, but he still looking like rushing up things all the time and lacking that accuracy and naturality that he has in his game. He needs time to get himself together. To understand what I'm talking about - it's a good example there. There he does have all that mix of craftiness/soft and very well finishing hands and explosiveness. I'm waiting till Jonas will transit that to NBA game as well. That will take few years I guess:

He showed some nice things already though. Nice video:

I'm thinking sooner rather than later. We can see in Terence Ross quite a difference in just a few weeks. I believe it is about confidence. there have been a few games where Jonas looked confident for long stretches. Tough early in the season, when each night you are going up against another NBA center you have never played against before, and where many of them are substantially (for now) stronger and more experienced that you. I think after Jonas has been back for a while he will suddenly just get confident. And he will relax and play without the tenseness. Still with intensity but not tense. I am sure we will see this change before the year is out.

Good point. You meant this season, not year right? I'm thinking he might start very strong coming back after finger's injury. Fresh legs and a little bit of self-reflection. Actually his injury might have some good influence for him. He'll have time to slow down his excitment and to add some more muscules and to work with his left arm. Another thing which he should add to his offense.

Nailed it, all he needs is some more confidence. Getting bigger will help.

Just an update on Tristan Thompson.

Since Andy went down and the mask was taken off. Tristan averages 13.7 ppg, 12.1 rpg, 50.3 FG%, 67.7 FT% in addition to his usual excellent defense (he can defend both back to basket type PF and face to basket PF); 10 double-double in 15 games. Has improved is scoring on (running) hook shots and drives to the hoop. Still no jump shot but as his form on FTs is so much better these days, I would not be surprised if he develops a 10-14 feet range jump shot in a year or two.

Plus Tristan can create his own shot.

A lot of the hate towards him on the Cavaliers boards has died down. There was lots of it; not as much as the hate on Bargnani here, but lots of it. The hate is now directed at Dion Waiters but again, I believe the Cavaliers made the right pick when they picked him. And to Zeller to some extent for being such a softie on defense.

He's been excellent of late. He's a work in progress but there is no reason he can't be a double-double guy over a full season. He's a throwback PF in many ways but the talent is there to develop a decent enough offensive game that you can keep him on the floor late in games. He's improved his FT% to that end and he is finding more ways to get his hook shot off to good effect. People forget he only played one year of college for, in my opinion, a horrible coach. He needed some time.

I thought he would be back by now. Their saying one more week, i wanna see him start along side Eddy Davis. Once he's 100% they better force feed him minutes, we need him to develop for next season. I miss his hustle, energy, and intensity.

sounds like bargs will be back around the same time too! good/bad? i'm strangely optimistic on this one. if he can adjust to the new hustle plan brought on by casey, maybe he won't be a complete disappointment for the franchise.
