I think all serious Raptors fans are in agreement with what needs to be done to improve the Raptors for next season if Bosh stays. Johnson needs to be signed for a reasonable amount, the young gunz need to continue to be developed, a wise usable draft choice needs to be made and some smart trades need to happen.
I am also for purposes of my proposal going to assume that Bargnani does not get traded this summer even though a number of us would like to see him moved for a a better defensive and rebounding center. However most are in concurrence that BC is not yet ready to give up on him. So I am going to plug him for next season despite his obvious short comings which hopefully he will continue to work on and mitigate starting in 2010-11
Can Turk realistically be traded? If not then I guess we have to pencil him in for minutes next season. Or is there a team out there that might bite and who would that team offer?
---------------------------------------------
A lot of options.
Maybe the place to begin is here.
1. Who should the Raptors draft?
2. Who needs to be moved to improve the team and among those that need to be moved who can we realistically expect to be traded?
Here is my list of signings along with my favorite possible draft pick. The dollar amounts are my estimate of what I think will be a reasonable guess as to what they may sign for except for the draft pick whose first year salary is set by the CBA.
1. Sign Bosh $17.0 million
1a. Sign Johnson $4.0 million
1b. Extend Weems $2.0 million
1c. Draft Damion James – $1.4 million
Total remaining plus draft pick
----------------------------------
Bosh – $17.0
Bargnani – $8.0
Johnson – $4.0
Weems – $2.0
DeRozan – $2.5
Jack – $4.9
James – $1.4
—————–------------------------------
Total 7 players for $39.8 million
=======================
Now my list of who I think should be moved and can realistically expected to be moved. I realize it may be hard to move Turk but I think that BC should make an effort to move him.
2. Trade Hedo – $9.8 million
3. Trade Calderon – 9.0 million
4. Move Evans – trade or buy out – $5.1 million
5. Move Banks – trade or buy out – $4.8 million
6. Move or buy out Belinelli – $2.4 million
------------------------------------------------------------
Total outgoing 6 players for $31.1 million
================================
That leaves the Raptors with 7 players $39.8 million in salary and $31 million departing. The Raptors will also have a full MLE at about $5.5 million and some vet minimums to work with. I will assume that seven players are added to the roster via trades and free agent signings bringing the total under contract to 14 players
------------------------------------------------------------
At this point we have the #4 and #5 rotation players covered so nothing more needs to be done there.
Now comes the hard part. We have to fill in #1, #2 and #3 from the list of the 6 players above and a possible MLE signing. Keep in mind that realistically the Raptors really need only about 10 or 11 guys at the most who will see serious court time. So we are only talking about adding 3 good players to the list of 7 and possibly a 4th.
So what kind of trades do the Raptors make from the list of 6 outgoing players to acquire three and maybe four really usable incoming players including maybe an all star. They will have $31 million plus 125% to work with.
If you have a different draft pick than James than the players you might want to trade for might vary.
We only need to figure out three trades? I will fill the 4th spot with a MLE signing.
I will think about it and come up with my three trades hopefully before the NBA Finals begin.
In the meantime anyone who care to come up with a list of 3-4 players to add to the 7 or modify my list of keepers please have it.
Enjoy
